Appliances are not on the city's list of refused curbside material, so a unit rides inside the same three cubic yard allowance, and the county district also lists a scrap metal recycler in Lima that takes most appliances. A freon unit is the open question.
City cost & eligibility
No appliance rate is published. The curbside allowance is free inside the refuse utility but the city does not name appliances either way, and the district's own recycler lists one neighbouring county site that refuses freon units entirely. Call Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171 about a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, and OmniSource at 419-227-3411 about scrap metal.
When & how
Give the hauler 48 hours notice for a curbside appliance, or deliver the unit to the scrap metal recycler during business hours after calling ahead, since the district warns that its list comes from a voluntary survey.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and secure or remove the doors before it leaves the house, and drain any fuel or oil from equipment that travels in the same load. Keep appliances out of the recycling container, which takes only plastics number 1 and 2, cans, glass, paper, paperboard and cardboard.
Out after 6 p.m. the night before, in by 6 p.m. the day after
Nothing goes to the curb before 6 p.m. on the day before the scheduled pickup, and containers come back in no later than 6 p.m. the day after. Containers stay out of the street, sit at least three feet apart, and face the house with the wheels toward it.
Up to three cubic yards of material may be placed at the curb with the city containers at no extra charge, and anything beyond that amount is removed and charged to the resident. Extra material can be bagged or placed in another can while the city container is already full, and all household refuse has to be bagged inside the container.
Mattresses, furniture and other bulky pieces need the hauler told by phone or through its online service form at least 48 hours before the regular collection. The hauler also takes six cans or bags of ordinary trash a week, each weighing no more than 50 pounds.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
