A mattress is named on the city appliance and furniture list and Rumpke counts a mattress and box spring together as one large item, so a bed set fits inside the single weekly large item allowance. It has to be wrapped and sealed in plastic first.
Appliances are named on the city list, so a washer, dryer, stove or water heater goes out as the large item on the regular collection day. A unit that holds refrigerant is the exception, because it needs proof of Freon removal before the hauler will take it, and non-Freon appliances also have a year-round county recycling route.
A cooling unit has two published routes. Curbside, it is a large item like any appliance, but the city requires a sticker showing a certified technician removed the Freon plus the Rumpke Refrigerant Recovery Statement before it can be collected. At the county, the Friday electronics drop-off takes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units and dehumidifiers with the Freon left intact for a per unit charge that has to be confirmed.
Electronics are not part of the curbside service. The city sends residents to Rumpke and the Butler County district, which runs a Friday computer and television drop-off at Cohen Middletown from July 10 to October 30, taking tube and flat screen televisions of all sizes, monitors, towers, laptops, peripherals, printers, scanners, fax machines, cell phones, batteries of all types, consoles, DVD players and media.
Construction material is written out of the curbside program. The city large item pickup excludes bricks, concrete and building materials, and Rumpke refuses drywall, concrete, bricks, dirt and rocks at the curb and tells households to contact it about alternative disposal.
No city, hauler or county list names exercise equipment. A machine that fits inside the one large item allowance may go out with the bulky item, but nobody publishes that answer, so the piece has to be confirmed with Rumpke or the city first.
The weekly service carries household refuse in up to five 35 gallon containers plus one large item and the recycling container, with unlimited bagged leaves added in the fall. Anything past that allowance is a call to Rumpke, which asks for at least 48 business hours of notice and notes that fees may apply to excess trash.
The handoff matters
The city contract includes one large item a week with the container allowance, so a couch, a mattress, an appliance or a metal set goes out on the normal trash day between 6 am and 3 pm Monday through Friday rather than on a separate scheduled pickup. Rumpke asks for at least 48 business hours of notice when a load is larger than that allowance.
