Count the bags and boxes, not everything inside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.

Filled bags and boxes

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.

Empty cardboard and containers

Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Furniture and other larger items

Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Couches and large household items

Special rules apply

Scranton does not run a bulky item appointment. The city's own answer is that crews take household garbage first and pick up larger items only when there is room in the truck, and that items containing metal are refused.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Scranton household on a municipal refuse route. The city publishes no bulky pickup fee and no appointment system, and it states that items containing metal are not accepted.
When & how
Put the item out on the regular refuse day, no earlier than the night before, and call the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178 before setting out anything with a metal frame or if a piece was left behind.
Get it ready
Remove metal from the item and dispose of it separately, because the city states that metal bearing items are not collected and that metal must be taken out first. Keep the piece manageable for a two person manual lift, since the crew picks up larger items only when there is space on the truck.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Mattresses appear in the city's own bulk answer alongside couches, with the same two limits: truck space on the regular collection day and no metal in the item.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Scranton household on a municipal refuse route. No bulky fee and no appointment are published, and the city refuses items containing metal.
When & how
Set the mattress out on the regular refuse day, no earlier than the night before, and call 570-348-4178 to confirm the piece if it has a metal frame or if it is left behind.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the garbage can, which is limited to a 32 gallon can with a lid. Because mattresses normally contain metal springs, confirm the piece with the dispatcher before the collection day rather than assuming the crew can take it.

Appliances and scrap metal

Special rules apply

Appliances are metal, and the city refuses metal bearing items at the curb. The city's own list sends them to a scrap yard or to the utility appliance programme instead.

City cost & eligibility
The city names scrap metal yards and an appliance recycling programme rather than a curbside route, and a yard buys material on terms it sets itself while the appliance programme requires a working unit and an active PPL account at the address. Confirm acceptance and terms before the appliance is moved.
When & how
Call the yard or the appliance programme before moving the unit, and keep it off the curb on the refuse day because metal bearing items are refused there.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, secure or remove the doors, and keep it upright for transport. A working refrigerator, freezer, mini fridge, room air conditioner or dehumidifier may qualify for the utility programme, while anything non working is a scrap load.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulk answer, the hard to recycle list or the appliance programme, so a machine has to be confirmed before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
No city, county or programme list names a treadmill or weight machine. Larger items are taken at the curb only when the truck has room and metal bearing items are refused, so confirm the machine and its weight with the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178 before it goes out.
When & how
Call the dispatcher before the collection day, and be ready to keep the machine if the city or a scrap yard will not take it.
Get it ready
Describe the machine and its weight when calling, remove loose weights and accessories, and strip metal parts where that is safe, because metal bearing items are refused. Keep the machine out of the garbage can and the recycling.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Everything goes out on the regular refuse day, not before

Garbage and commingled recycling are collected on the same weekly route, and material should go to the curb no earlier than the night before the scheduled pickup. A weekday holiday pushes every collection that week one day later. Missed garbage goes to the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178.

Use your own lidded can and the city recycling container

Garbage cans are bought by the resident and must be no heavier than a 32 gallon can with a lid on it, while the city provides the recycling containers at 101 W Poplar St. Glass has to be wrapped thoroughly and marked as glass, and leaves must not be mixed in with household garbage.

Public Works frequently asked questions on bulk items, carts, paint and holidays

Metal comes out before anything goes to the curb

The city refuses items containing metal at the curb and says metal must be removed from an item and disposed of separately. That is why appliances, metal furniture and exercise machines with steel frames belong with a scrap yard or a separate programme rather than the refuse route, and why the dispatcher should be asked about anything that has springs or a metal frame.

City of Scranton Bureau of Refuse and Recycling with Lackawanna County

Larger items with the regular refuse collection

A city household with a couch, a mattress or another large household item that has no metal in it.

Cost & conditions
No charge. City of Scranton household on a municipal refuse route. No bulky pickup fee or appointment is published, and larger items are taken with the regular collection only when there is room on the truck.
Arrange it
Put the item out on the regular refuse day no earlier than the night before, and call the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178 if it was left behind or if it contains metal.

No appointment and no guarantee: household garbage is collected first, so a larger item may be left behind on a busy day. Items containing metal are refused and the metal has to be removed and disposed of separately, which in practice rules out most appliances and any piece with a steel frame or springs.

Review the Public Works answers

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Scranton routes the awkward material to businesses and programmes rather than to a bulky appointment. Household garbage and commingled recycling go out weekly, with a one day delay after a weekday holiday, and larger household items go out with the same collection only when the truck has room and only if they contain no metal. Appliances are the clearest example of what that means: the city refuses metal bearing items at the curb and lists a scrap yard in Scranton plus a utility appliance programme instead, and the utility pickup is free for working refrigerators, freezers, mini fridges, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers with an active account at the address. Screens and computers go to the city's registered electronics recycling events or to a manufacturer programme collection site under state law. Household chemicals, bulbs, batteries and propane wait for the Lackawanna County collection at Montage Mountain, which needs pre-registration and is open to county residents only. Construction debris has no public route at all and needs a private container before the work starts. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Scranton.

How much does bulk junk removal cost in Scranton?

A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?

Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.

Do I count every object inside a bag or box?

No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.

Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?

Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

Will Scranton take a couch at the curb?

Maybe. The city's answer to how to get rid of couches and mattresses is that crews must collect household garbage first and will take larger items only when there is room in the truck, and that items containing metal are not accepted. Confirm the piece with the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178, and take any metal out and dispose of it separately before the collection day.Official guidance

How do mattresses go out in Scranton?

Call the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178 to confirm the piece, and put it out on the regular refuse day no earlier than the night before.Official guidance

Where do Scranton appliances go if the curb refuses them?

The city refuses items containing metal at the curb and its hard to recycle list names Fiegleman's Recycling Center for scrap metal and microwaves, plus the PPL appliance recycling programme for working units. The yard buys material on its own terms and the utility programme needs a working appliance and an active account at the pickup address, so confirm before moving the unit.Official guidance

Will Scranton pick up a treadmill?

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulk answer or its hard to recycle list, and larger items are taken at the curb only when the truck has room, with metal bearing items refused. Call the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178, describe the machine and its weight, and confirm before it goes out.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Scranton?

A missed pickup goes to the Public Works dispatcher at 570-348-4178, recycling containers are issued at 101 W Poplar St, and recycling questions go to recycle@scrantonpa.gov.Official guidance

How are bulky items handled in Scranton?

There is no bulky appointment. The city's own answer is that crews must pick up household garbage first and will take larger items only if there is room in the truck, and that items containing metal are not accepted and the metal has to be removed and disposed of separately. Confirm anything unusual with the dispatcher at 570-348-4178 before setting it out on the regular refuse day.Official guidance

Where do paint and chemicals go in Scranton?

To the Lackawanna County household hazardous waste collection, which runs on Saturday October 31, 2026 at the Pavilion at Montage Mountain, 1000 Montage Mountain Road, for county residents only with pre-registration required. Oil based paint, stains, thinners, solvents, poisons, pool and lawn treatments, automotive fluids, batteries other than electric vehicle batteries, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, propane tanks and liquid mercury are accepted, and latex paint is not. Paint can also be dried out with kitty litter and then bagged, and the city points residents to recycle@scrantonpa.gov for upcoming events.Official guidance
