No charge. No per-item fee is published for bulky appliances on the curbside route or at the Refuse Collection Centers. The city landfill is a different case: it refuses appliances and other bulky items, and it is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence.
When & how
Put the appliance out by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your bulky collection week, or take it to a Refuse Collection Center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Empty and clean a refrigerator or freezer, secure or remove the doors, and keep the appliance out of the garbage container. Water heaters and heavy appliances are on the acceptable list, and appliances must not be mixed with household garbage in a bulky pile.
Garbage at the curb by 7 a.m. in the city container
Garbage is collected weekly and has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day, with everything in tightly secured bags inside the automated container. The wheels and handles face the curb with the arrows pointing to the street, the container sits within two feet of the curb, at least three feet from any obstruction and five feet from parked cars, and it comes back off the curb after the collection day. Garbage is collected on all holidays, with anything missed taken the following Saturday.

A Chattanooga household at a property it owns or lives in, with furniture, a mattress, an appliance or a television that the garbage container cannot hold.
Cost & conditions
No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash. The service is limited instead of priced, at twelve bulky collections per property in any consecutive twelve-month period, and it is not offered to businesses, apartment complexes or landlords.
Arrange it

Twelve bulky collections per property in any twelve months, no businesses, apartments or landlords, and building materials, lumber, auto parts, liquids and 55-gallon drums are not acceptable. Household garbage must stay in the automated container.
The self-haul route for a Chattanooga address depends on what is in the load. The city's three Refuse Collection Centers take appliances, mattresses, furniture, metal, drywall, limited tires, lumber and similar bulky material from city residents, but they require a licence showing Chattanooga residency and Hamilton County tags, limit a visit to eight bags, cap the year at twelve visits, and refuse computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush, car parts, propane tanks and hazardous material. Computer-related electronics and hazardous material go instead to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which the city describes as free to any Hamilton County resident and which is open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a Tennessee driver's licence and a fifteen gallon or 150 pound household limit. The City Landfill on Birchwood Pike is not a route for any of that material: it is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence, it refuses bulky items such as appliances and furniture, and it refuses construction and demolition waste outright. Appliances, mattresses, barbecue grills, microwaves, clothes, metal, drywall up to one truck, tires up to four automotive, furniture, toys, landscape timbers, vinyl and lumber, from households at the address where the material was generated.
City of Chattanooga residents only, with a driver's licence showing residency and valid Hamilton County tags and no commercial tags. No contractors, businesses or landlords, no tandem axle trailers, dump bodies or trucks larger than a standard pickup, no load larger than a standard truck bed, eight bags per visit, and twelve visits per calendar year. The attendant may refuse a load, and the not-acceptable list includes computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush and leaves, car parts, propane tanks, hazardous material and small engines.
Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., closed on the city's listed holidays.
