No charge. The city publishes no per-item fee for bulky trash, and mattresses are named on the acceptable list for the curbside bulk route and accepted at the Refuse Collection Centers. The curbside service is limited to twelve collections per property in any twelve-month period and is not offered to businesses, apartments or landlords.
When & how
Put the mattress at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your bulky collection week, or take it to a Refuse Collection Center during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress in its own pile, separate from household garbage, brush and yard waste, at least five feet from other stationary objects and near the street in front of the residence, without blocking the roadway, sidewalk, ditch or catch basins and without covering water meters or sitting under low-hanging wires.

Brush, bulky trash, bagged yard waste and leaves are collected by different trucks and go to different disposal sites, so they have to sit in separate piles at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Bulky material stays at least five feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other stationary objects, sits near the street in front of the residence, and must not block the roadway, sidewalk, ditch or catch basins, cover water meters, sit under low-hanging wires or go in an alleyway.

Twelve bulky collections per property in any twelve months, no businesses, apartments or landlords, and building materials, lumber, auto parts, liquids and 55-gallon drums are not acceptable. Household garbage must stay in the automated container.
The self-haul route for a Chattanooga address depends on what is in the load. The city's three Refuse Collection Centers take appliances, mattresses, furniture, metal, drywall, limited tires, lumber and similar bulky material from city residents, but they require a licence showing Chattanooga residency and Hamilton County tags, limit a visit to eight bags, cap the year at twelve visits, and refuse computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush, car parts, propane tanks and hazardous material. Computer-related electronics and hazardous material go instead to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, which the city describes as free to any Hamilton County resident and which is open Tuesday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a Tennessee driver's licence and a fifteen gallon or 150 pound household limit. The City Landfill on Birchwood Pike is not a route for any of that material: it is free only for household garbage from a city resident's primary residence, it refuses bulky items such as appliances and furniture, and it refuses construction and demolition waste outright. Appliances, mattresses, barbecue grills, microwaves, clothes, metal, drywall up to one truck, tires up to four automotive, furniture, toys, landscape timbers, vinyl and lumber, from households at the address where the material was generated.
City of Chattanooga residents only, with a driver's licence showing residency and valid Hamilton County tags and no commercial tags. No contractors, businesses or landlords, no tandem axle trailers, dump bodies or trucks larger than a standard pickup, no load larger than a standard truck bed, eight bags per visit, and twelve visits per calendar year. The attendant may refuse a load, and the not-acceptable list includes computer electronics, concrete, dirt, rock, brick, block, roofing, insulation, pallets, brush and leaves, car parts, propane tanks, hazardous material and small engines.
Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., closed on the city's listed holidays.
