City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances count as bulky trash within the two item weekly allowance included with the contracted service, with no separate fee published, provided a refrigerated unit has the refrigerant or compressor removed and tagged before collection.
When & how
Put the prepared appliance at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day as one of the two weekly bulk items, after calling public works to report the tagging on a refrigerated unit.
Get it ready
Drain all water from a washing machine, and for a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or vending machine have the refrigerant or compressor professionally removed and tagged before collection, then call public works to notify them that the work has been done. A unit with the refrigerant still in it is refused.
The contracted weekly service takes two cans of up to 96 gallons, two bags and two bulk items, all out by 6 a.m. on the collection day. An oversized or large box counts as a bulk item while an ordinary box should be broken down into a bag or can, and a heavy item such as a basketball goal, a trampoline or a sectional sofa has to be broken down into components before it will be collected.
A refrigerated appliance such as a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or vending machine cannot be collected unless the refrigerant or the compressor has been removed and the unit tagged before it goes out, and the city asks the resident to call public works to report that the work was done professionally. Washing machines have to be drained of all water before collection.
