Appliances are bulk waste in Jackson only with their compressors removed, which the City states directly in the bulk waste definition.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. An eligible appliance counts against the twelve bulk pickups a year included in the monthly municipal collection fee for an occupied one or two family unit. An appliance with the compressor still in place does not meet the published definition.
When & how
Arrange the compressor work first, then call 731-425-8545 to schedule the pickup and set the unit out within forty-eight hours of the pickup day.
Get it ready
Have the compressor removed before the appliance is set out, because the City lists appliances with compressors removed as the eligible form. Confirm with Health and Sanitation who may perform that work and whether any documentation is expected, then keep the unit inside the five foot by eight foot by five foot load limit.
Every bulk waste or bulk yard waste pickup has to be pre-scheduled with the Department of Health and Sanitation at 731-425-8545. Bulk waste may sit at the curb no more than forty-eight hours before the pickup, yard waste no more than seven days, and the load must fit inside five feet high by eight feet long by five feet wide.
Residents get two collection days a week on either a Monday and Thursday or a Tuesday and Friday route, with the cart at the curb by 7 a.m. Anything that fits the cart, or a hand pile of three feet high by five feet long by three feet wide, or ten bags of fifty pounds each, is handled on the regular route rather than as a bulk pickup.
No liquids, flammable material or hazardous waste is picked up, and those items are held for the City's annual household hazardous waste collection events. The department answers questions about those events at 731-425-8545.
Household refuse cannot be mixed into a bulk load, bulk waste and bulk yard waste cannot share one pickup, and construction debris or contractor waste is never part of the program at all. Mixed loads risk being left behind.

Jackson households that haul their own loads have two published destinations. The Jackson Recycling Center at 74B Conalco Drive takes cardboard, paper, metals and plastics numbered one and two free of charge and is open five days a week with a midday closure. Everything else, including construction and contractor debris, goes to the privately owned Madison County Landfill at 550 Aaron Long Road, which sets its own disposal costs and requires hard hats and safety vests on the property. Household hazardous waste is not accepted at either place and waits for the City's annual household hazardous waste collection events, and liquids, flammable material and hazardous waste are never collected at the curb.
