You want to know it is handled.
When the next collection does not fit your plans, choose a Dropcurb pickup day. Updates keep you informed, and completion photos show when the booked items are gone.
A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.
Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Furniture and appliances are collected in Johnson City by appointment through the Street Division rather than with the weekly cart.
City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no fee for a furniture or appliance pickup and handles scheduling by phone, so call the Street Division on 423-975-2700 and confirm the arrangement and any charge before the item goes out.
When & how
Call the Street Division at 423-975-2700 to schedule the collection, then place the items where the division directs.
Get it ready
Keep furniture and appliances out of the maroon garbage cart, because drivers collect only what is inside the cart and do not take extra items beside it. Empty the appliance and secure or remove the doors before the pickup.
The only metal the City names on a route is the aluminum drink can in the recycling stream and the appliance group the Street Division collects, so loose scrap metal has to be confirmed.
City cost & eligibility
No city scrap metal collection or rate is published, so call the Street Division on 423-975-2700 and describe the item to find out whether it travels as an appliance on a scheduled pickup or needs a private scrap dealer.
When & how
Call the Street Division at 423-975-2700 before moving a large metal item, and use the recycling drop-off only for aluminum drink cans.
Get it ready
Drain any fuel or oil, remove glass, plastic and non-metal parts, and keep the item out of the garbage cart and off the curb until a route is confirmed. Keep aluminum drink cans separate for the recycling drop-off and do not mix loose metal with household garbage.
Bagged household garbage goes in the maroon cart, and nothing beside the cart is collected.
City cost & eligibility
Solid Waste billing is set up with water service, so the charge appears on that account. If the cart is not enough, the city's current garbage questions page lists an additional cart at 77.50 plus tax with a 30.00 annual decal, purchased at the Solid Waste Services Complex on New Street, while an older city FAQ document still shows 62.00, so confirm the current amounts on 423-975-2792 before ordering.
When & how
Put the cart at the street or alley by 6 a.m. on the collection day, and call 423-975-2792 between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays to confirm the collection day for the address.
Get it ready
Keep the lid closed so the cart is not overloaded or too heavy for the truck to lift, place it clear of mailboxes, vehicles and other carts, and turn it the right way, because all four are listed among the common reasons a cart is left behind. Anything outside the cart stays with the household.
Put the cart at the street or alley by 6 a.m. on the collection day, keep the lid closed, and leave it clear of mailboxes, vehicles and other carts. Drivers collect only what is inside the cart, so anything set beside it stays with the household.
Furniture and appliance pickups are scheduled by phone with the Street Division on 423-975-2700 and are separate from the weekly cart collection. Empty the appliance, secure or remove the doors, and place the items where the division directs rather than beside the cart.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Street Division furniture and appliance pickup
A Johnson City household with furniture or an appliance that will not fit in the maroon cart.
Cost & conditions
The City publishes no fee for this pickup and takes the arrangement by phone, so call 423-975-2700 and confirm the terms before the items go out.
Arrange it
Call the Street Division at 423-975-2700, describe the items, and place them where the division directs on the day it assigns.
This is a separate appointment from the weekly garbage cart, and nothing set beside the cart is collected. Bulky material, metal items and appliances all have to be confirmed by phone first.
Johnson City households haul electronics and small quantities of used oil to the Solid Waste Services Complex at 91 New Street on weekdays, and bulky furniture and appliances are scheduled with the Street Division on 423-975-2700 rather than dropped off. Building material, carpet and other heavy loads are not a city service, so the load goes to the Washington County Convenience Center on 423-753-1652 or the Iris Glen Environmental Center on 423-926-8375, and the City refers to the same sites for overflow and for items that are the household's own responsibility. Before you book
A few things worth knowing.
Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Johnson City.
How much does bulk junk removal cost in Johnson City?+
A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.
Can you pick up bags of junk today?+
Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.
Do I count every object inside a bag or box?+
No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.
Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?+
Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.
Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?+
Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.
How do I get furniture or an appliance picked up in Johnson City?+
Call the Street Division at 423-975-2700 to schedule the collection. Furniture and appliances are handled as an appointment rather than with the weekly garbage cart, and nothing placed beside the cart is collected, because drivers take only what is inside it. Empty the appliance and secure or remove the doors before the pickup day.Official guidance
Where does scrap metal go in Johnson City?+
There is no published city scrap metal collection. The City names aluminum drink cans in the recycling stream and collects appliances through a Street Division appointment on 423-975-2700, so call that number with a description of the metal item to find out whether it can be scheduled or has to go to a private scrap dealer.Official guidance
Will the driver take extra bags beside my Johnson City cart?+
No. Drivers collect only what is placed inside the cart, so anything set beside it stays with the household. If the cart is not enough, an additional cart can be purchased at the Solid Waste Services Complex on New Street with an annual decal, and the collection day is confirmed by calling 423-975-2792 between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.Official guidance
What does it cost to remove a large item in Johnson City?+
Solid Waste billing is set up with water service, so household garbage appears on that account, and an additional cart is bought outright with a yearly decal rather than rented. Furniture and appliance pickups are scheduled by phone with the Street Division, which quotes the arrangement, and the county sites that take building material and overflow set their own rates.Official guidance
Who handles Johnson City waste and where is the county involved?+
Johnson City collects household garbage, recycling and brush with its own crews, with the cart, recycling drop-offs and electronics handled by Solid Waste Services on 423-975-2792 and furniture, appliance and brush work handled by the Street Department on 423-975-2700. Washington County operates the wider disposal sites, which is why building material and overflow loads are referred to the county convenience center and the Iris Glen Environmental Center.Official guidance
Where can I take something the city cart will not collect?+
Electronics go to the E-Waste receptacle at 91 New Street on weekdays, and furniture or appliances are scheduled with the Street Division rather than dropped off. Building material, carpet and overflow that is the household's own responsibility go to the Washington County Convenience Center or the Iris Glen Environmental Center, and loose scrap metal has no published city route, so call 423-975-2700 with a description before moving it.Official guidance
