Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Appliances are named twice. The scheduled curbside pickup takes freezers, water heaters, washers, dryers, refrigerators and air conditioning units at no additional charge, and the drop-off points take white goods such as stoves, water heaters, washers and dryers.
Midland gives a household two bulky routes: a free scheduled curbside pickup for furniture and appliances, and three resident drop-off points that take bulky items, white goods, recyclables and brush. The city publishes more detail here than most, including exactly where the pile goes.
The handoff matters
Midland collects residential garbage twice a week on either a Monday and Thursday or a Tuesday and Friday route, with individual curbside cart service and one alley container for every four to five residents. Large items follow different instructions. The city states that they must be placed in the alley in the city right of way, behind the home, and explicitly that the pile should not sit next to the dumpster, because the collection is scheduled with the Solid Waste Division and runs by date of call. The city also states that it will not go onto private property, so a pile inside a gate or in a carport is out of reach.
