The authority runs a free bi-annual Electronic Waste Collection Event at the Ivy centre for Albemarle County, Charlottesville and Scottsville residents, and the page retained here posted September 12, 2026 as the next date with its registration already full and a waitlist in place. The city itself publishes no curbside electronics route.
City cost & eligibility
No city curbside route or city price is published, so a television, monitor or computer goes to the authority's free bi-annual Electronic Waste Collection Event at Ivy. Registration is required in advance, the event is limited to the first 488 households with up to 10 items each and a maximum of two CRT displays, and the date posted when the page was retained had already passed with registration full, so check the next date and the waitlist before loading a device. The authority's household hazardous waste days also take small electronics such as digital cameras, cellphones and music players, and lithium batteries are accepted year round at Ivy.
When & how
Small devices wait for an authority household hazardous waste collection day, and lithium batteries can go to the Ivy center during its Monday through Saturday hours. A television or computer should not be put out until the city or the authority confirms where it goes.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the everyday trash container and out of the recycling cart, and keep them away from the household hazardous waste plastic rule, which refuses plastic that held hazardous waste outside a collection day. Wipe personal data from a computer, phone or drive before handover.
Automotive parts, chemicals and contractor spoils are refused
The city large item pickup will not take automotive parts, hazardous waste or contractor spoils, and it sends that material to the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority's Ivy center instead. Household chemicals such as paint, solvents, gasoline, kerosene, cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent tubes and CFLs wait for one of the authority's free collection days, and lithium batteries are accepted year round at Ivy.
Recycling is free with the trash account and runs every other week
Curbside recycling is free to customers who also use the city trash service, the city supplies the rolling cart, and collection runs every other week on the same day as trash. Carts come in three sizes with 95 gallon as the default and can be requested, exchanged or returned through the city's online form, and the authority's McIntire center takes extra source separated material.

Wait for an authority household hazardous waste day
A household with paint, solvents, adhesives, gasoline, kerosene, cleaners, furniture polish, pesticides, acids, antifreeze, motor oil, fluorescent tubes, CFLs, thermostats, batteries or small electronics such as cameras and phones.
Cost & conditions
No charge. City of Charlottesville households. The city states that the authority periodically provides the collection free of charge for city residents, and the authority describes the service as free to residents; commercial participation is prohibited at these residential collection days, and a business instead registers for a separate commercial event that carries a disposal fee.
Arrange it
Hold the material until the next scheduled collection at the Ivy Materials Utilization Center, and watch the authority's collection page for the date. Lithium batteries do not have to wait, because Ivy takes them year round.
The collection runs on periodic days rather than continuously, so the material is stored at home until then, and a business registers separately for the commercial event, where it confirms the qualifying criteria and pays the disposal fee. Small electronics such as digital cameras, cellphones and music players appear on the collection day list, but televisions and computers are not named.

Municipal solid waste and construction debris including household trash, demolition material, furniture, mattresses and appliances, with appliances containing Freon taken for a 17 dollar per unit charge covering refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, humidifiers and condenser units; tires priced by tire for Albemarle County and City of Charlottesville customers; free recyclables including plastic films, aluminum cans, newsprint, cardboard, mixed metals, office paper and glass; lithium batteries year round; motor oil and antifreeze; compostable food waste; and tag a bag trash for bags up to 32 gallons with a pre-purchased sticker.
Hazardous material is not accepted at the scale and waits for a household hazardous waste collection day, and hazardous or toxic material and batteries are refused in the recycling streams. The Encore Shop reuse area cannot accept upholstered items and charges a disposal fee, and yard waste is not allowed in the compostable food waste bins.
Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Minimum charges and the scale house sticker sales run during those hours.
From $8 for the minimum charge per load, covering weights of 200 pounds or less, with heavier loads charged the published per ton rate for the material under the authority schedule effective July 1, 2026, which its accepted items page prints differently, so the scale house applies the schedule in force on the day of the trip and a Freon appliance charged 17 dollars per unit. Customers delivering to the center. The 8 dollar minimum is charged with a 1 dollar service fee for Albemarle County customers or a 10 dollar service fee for other customers, applied once per trip.
Source separated recyclables at no charge, including plastic films, aluminum beverage cans, newsprint, cardboard, mixed metals, office paper and glass bottles, plus compostable food waste brought in compostable bags with free three gallon bags available on site.
Styrofoam is not accepted at any recycling location, yard waste is not accepted, and commercial food waste and non compostables are refused. Pizza boxes are no longer part of the food composting programme. Motor oil and antifreeze are not taken here; they are collected free at the Ivy Convenience Center.
Winter hours from November 3 to March 8 are Wednesday through Monday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and summer hours from March 9 to November 1 are Wednesday through Monday from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.
No charge. The authority states that recyclables are accepted free at all three of its facilities, including the McIntire Recycling Center.
