Appliances are bulk household items for a city pickup, with refrigerator and freezer doors removed and glass taped. SPSA takes small appliances that carry a refrigerant-free certification sticker at its transfer stations, and the Regional Landfill takes appliances without one.

Get it ready
Remove the doors from refrigerators and freezers and tape all glass surfaces before an appliance is set out. At the transfer station, bring small appliances with a refrigerant-free certification sticker and take uncertified appliances to the Regional Landfill in Suffolk.
Request the collection before anything goes out, keep household items in a pile separate from yard debris, and stay inside one 4-foot by 4-foot by 10-foot household stack per week. Tape glass surfaces, remove refrigerator and freezer doors, and leave small debris that fits a bag to the resident after the truck has passed.
Bring proof of residency and a personal vehicle or a trailer up to 12 feet with no tools or equipment. Loose yard waste has to be bagged, rigid items must be no longer than 6 feet and 6 inches in diameter, and the load is screened for unauthorized waste at the station.

Only automobile tires are free and only up to 4 per day; larger or off-road tires are billed. Asbestos shingles need an appointment and the material must be double-bagged and taped closed. Batteries and liquids must be removed from boats, and the driver still passes the station's residency and vehicle checks.
