Toters, bulk trash and yard waste go to the curb no earlier than 3 p.m. on the day before your collection day, and no later than 7 a.m. on the day itself. The city code also asks for the containers to come back in by midnight after collection. Set out inside that window, because material left out at other times is a violation and the fine schedule starts with a written warning.

Household trash rides in the city toter

Household trash goes out bagged inside the city-issued toter with the lid closed and nothing sticking out, and only city-provided containers are allowed. A second trash toter carries a fee and is ordered at 757-727-8311, and a pile the city has to clear at the curb is billed under the special collection and disposal fee. Trash in black plastic bags is not collected as bulk.

Keep bulk, yard waste and trash apart

The city asks residents not to merge bulk trash with yard waste or bagged yard waste with piled branches, and each material is collected by a different vehicle, so leave space between the piles. Yard waste goes in clear plastic bags with no trash mixed in, and branches need to stay under 8 feet long and 6 inches in diameter with no more than ten cubic yards a week.

Cost & conditions
The city does not publish a resident gate rate for a general load, while the landfill charges by load for material the resident allowance does not cover. Confirm the current rate for the exact load, and note that building materials are accepted only with a valid City of Hampton building permit.
Arrange it
Take the load to 100 North Park Lane during open hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Open to Hampton residents for bulk trash. Building materials need a valid city building permit, hazardous waste is not accepted at the landfill, and questions go to the Solid Waste answering service at 757-751-6038.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Three routes cover what the weekly truck will not take. The city landfill at 100 North Park Lane, off Big Bethel Road, is open to Hampton residents for bulk trash and is the destination for renovation material, with doors open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Building materials go in only with a valid City of Hampton building permit, and the answer line for the landfill is 757-751-6038. Next to it, the yard waste site takes leaves, grass, limbs and branches from residents and from contractors doing yard work in the city: a Hampton resident can drop up to ten cubic yards free with proof of residency, grass and leaves have to be debagged at the site, limbs or branches no bigger than 5 inches across and 5 feet long are the site limit, and dirt cannot be dumped there. Computers and household chemicals go to the collection events the city runs with the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority at the Hampton Coliseum parking lot on Coliseum Drive, from 8 a.m. to noon on March 21, May 16, July 18, September 19 and November 21 in 2026, where the contractor wipes every hard drive before equipment is reused. Televisions are excluded from those events, so a television goes to a retailer drop-off instead. Household chemicals, including paint, solvents, fuels, pesticides and cleaners, must never be poured out or placed in the trash, and propane cylinders, even small ones, must not go in the container. Bulk trash from Hampton residents, including furniture, appliances and mattresses, plus construction and demolition debris, municipal solid waste and yard waste or green waste.

Building materials may be disposed of only with a valid building permit issued by the City of Hampton. Hazardous waste is not accepted at the landfill. A resident doing their own work gets five self-hauled pickup truck loads without a customer charge only when the permit is current and in the resident's name, the permit shows the contractor as self, the load is self-hauled and identification with the same address is presented.

Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon, closed Sunday.

The city publishes no resident gate rate, and the landfill charges by load for material outside the resident allowance. Confirm the current rate and the permit conditions before the trip, and note that a load that does not meet the self-haul conditions pays the public tipping rate.
