Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress or box spring stays out of the city cart and is collected through the large item service, put out on the ward's annual cleanup day, or dropped at the landfill citizens' center, which names mattresses and box springs as bulky items.

City cost & eligibility
From $20 for for a small pickup truck load under the City's large item collection article, with other applicable fees added, and the amount confirmed when the pickup is scheduled. A Winchester customer who receives city garbage and refuse collection and schedules the collection in advance with the Public Works Division.
When & how
Schedule the pickup before the mattress goes out, or wait for the ward's annual cleanup day, and set the piece at the curb by 6 a.m. on the agreed day with no more than 24 hours of early set out on a cleanup day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and bagged if it is going to the landfill, keep it clear of the sidewalk, mailbox, driveway and street, and remember that the county takes mattresses and box springs only at the landfill citizens' center rather than at a neighborhood convenience site.

Setting out a scheduled large item

A large item collection is only for an address that receives city collection, and the pickup has to be arranged before the item goes out. Give the address and the items on the request, put the pieces at the curb by 6 a.m. on the collection day the city assigns, keep them out of the sidewalk, street, mailbox and driveway, and leave the old cart alone because it belongs to the address rather than the household.

Use the ward's annual cleanup day

A Winchester household with regular trash service in a ward whose cleanup day is scheduled, holding items the ordinary collection refuses, from a couch and old paint cans to construction debris and electronics.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to a city household that registers in advance for its ward's date: Ward 2 on July 20 2026, Ward 3 on October 5 2026, Ward 4 on January 4 2027 and Ward 1 on April 5 2027.
Arrange it

One cleanup day each year for each ward, registration is required, the regular trash, recycling and yard waste collections still run on their own schedule, the pile has to stay clear of sidewalks, streets, mailboxes and driveways, and anything still out after two weeks is reported on (540) 773-1340.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Winchester resident who hauls their own material uses the Frederick County Regional Landfill at 280 Landfill Road for household waste, construction debris, concrete, asphalt and tires, and the landfill citizens' center at 146 Landfill Road for appliances, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, furniture, mattresses, box springs, remodeling waste and yard debris, with the doors removed from refrigerators and freezers. Household hazardous waste and used oil go to the convenience center on the third Wednesday of each month between noon and 6 p.m. and electronics on the fourth Wednesday between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Only material from Frederick County, Clarke County or the City of Winchester is accepted, the county's neighborhood convenience sites are limited to county taxpayers, and loads are weighed at the scale, so confirm the charge on (540) 665-5643, option 1, before loading. Drop off appliances, furniture, mattresses and remodeling waste

Frederick County Landfill Citizens' Center

146 Landfill Rd., Winchester, VA 22602

Large and bulky items such as major and small household appliances, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, lawn equipment with fluids removed, auto batteries, propane tanks, indoor and outdoor furniture, shelving, mattresses, box springs, and remodeling waste such as lumber, pipes, carpeting and yard debris. Used motor oil, antifreeze and cooking oil in sealed jugs are taken here, along with batteries.

Doors have to be removed from refrigerators and freezers before the appliance is left. The county's neighborhood convenience sites are for its own taxpayers, so a Winchester resident uses the regional landfill and this center instead. Hazardous chemicals are accepted only during the third Wednesday window, none of the waste may come from outside the service area, and the center closes at noon or all day on the county's published dates.

Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Sunday.

The county page describes household drop off at its convenience centers as free to county taxpayers and permits City of Winchester residents to use the regional landfill instead, where loads are weighed and the published prices cover the commercial, construction and tire streams, so call the landfill on (540) 665-5643, option 1, and confirm what a Winchester household pays for a bulky or appliance load before hauling it.

Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Mattress removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Winchester.

How much does mattress removal cost in Winchester?

The price depends on the mattress size you choose. A queen mattress is $99 as the first item and $30 as an additional item. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Add any box spring or frame separately, then review your total and any applicable tax before payment.

Can I book same-day mattress pickup in Winchester?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Have the mattress outside and accessible according to your confirmation. Your booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Is my box spring or bed frame included in mattress removal?

The mattress price covers the mattress only. Add your box spring, bed frame or adjustable base separately if those are going too. Choose the size and type that match each item. The combined price appears before booking.

Will you carry my mattress downstairs or out of my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange to move the mattress out of your apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load it and take it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Check your building’s access rules before arranging the move outside.

Can you pick up my old mattress when my new one arrives?

You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed. Dropcurb books a pickup day, not the retailer’s delivery window. Contact us before booking if access is limited to a short time.

Can I put a mattress out with the trash in Winchester?

No. A mattress and box spring are kept out of the city cart and are collected through the city's large item service by appointment, taken on the ward's annual cleanup day, or hauled to the landfill citizens' center at 146 Landfill Road, where the county lists mattresses and box springs among the bulky items that have to go directly to the landfill rather than to a neighborhood convenience site.Official guidance

How do I get rid of a couch or a mattress in Winchester?

Schedule a large item collection with the city before the piece goes out, use the ward's annual cleanup day once a year, or haul it to the Frederick County landfill citizens' center at 146 Landfill Road. Furniture, mattresses, appliances and other items too large for the cart are all kept out of the city trash, and the large item service is only for addresses that receive city collection.Official guidance

What does a large item pickup cost in Winchester?

A scheduled city large item collection is billed at the published small load amount for the service with other applicable fees added for items such as electronics, the ward's annual cleanup day is free to households that register in advance, and a self hauled load at the county landfill is weighed at the scale, so confirm the current amount with Public Works on (540) 667-1815 before the items go out.Official guidance
