The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Kenosha collects trash and recycling in City carts through its own Department of Public Works Waste Division, and it runs separate curbside services for the material that does not belong in a cart. A household books a bulky waste pick-up by calling the department, gets four free pick-ups a year, and pays a published fee for each one after that, with a five cubic yard or thirty bag limit per pick-up and preparation rules that cover everything from rolled carpet to the length of a piece of metal piping. Appliances come out on a scheduled pick-up once a household buys a sticker for each one, tires come out with a ticket for each tire and a limit of four at a time, brush is collected from May through November in tied bundles, and yard waste is collected twice a year in City-approved biodegradable bags. Residents can also take material to two sites: the bulk and recycling drop-off at 1001 50th Street, where bulk and tire tickets are bought online, and the yard waste and brush site at 4071 88th Avenue. Electronics cannot go in Wisconsin trash at all, so a household uses a registered E-Cycle Wisconsin collection site instead.

Accepted with preparation

Tires are collected curbside by appointment with a ticket for each tire and a limit of four tires at a time, and the same limit applies at the drop-off site.

City cost & eligibility
$2 for tire ticket for each tire, bought before the pick-up or drop-off is scheduled, with a limit of four vehicle tires at a time. City of Kenosha residents and residential property owners for auto vehicle and small truck tires only, with no commercial disposal allowed and proof of residence required.

Yard waste, brush and leaves

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected curbside twice a year in City-approved biodegradable bags, brush is bundled from May through November, and both can be dropped at the yard waste site on 88th Avenue.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Kenosha residents and residential property owners, with no disposal charge published for curbside yard waste collection or for the yard waste and brush drop-off site; the household buys the approved biodegradable bags at retail, and the City offers a coupon toward them.
When & how
Curbside yard waste runs twice a year, in spring and in fall, on the regular garbage day with the exact dates announced through the newspaper, radio and the City recycling calendar. Bundled brush is scheduled from May through November by calling 262-653-4050 at least one business day ahead, and the yard waste and brush drop-off site at 4071 88th Avenue is open April through November, Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays.
Get it ready
Yard waste has to be in a City-approved biodegradable bag, from Biobag, Bag to Nature or Ecoguard, at no more than forty pounds per bag, and it goes in a separate pile from the garbage because a different truck collects it and the state does not allow yard waste in landfills. Accepted material is branches pencil sized or smaller, garden plants, grass clippings, leaves, pine cones and needles, tree seeds, shrub trimmings and weeds. Cemetery wreaths, cornstalks, decorations, floral arrangements, food waste, pumpkins, rhubarb stems, tree nuts and wood chips are not collected, and plastic bags are not accepted for yard waste. Brush is tree and shrub trimmings under six inches in diameter, bundled in three foot lengths with string or twine only, at no more than forty pounds per bundle, with roots, stumps and dirt removed and no bags or boxes used.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Wisconsin bans certain electronics from the trash and from landfills, so a Kenosha household uses an E-Cycle Wisconsin collection site or mail-back programme instead of a City cart.

City cost & eligibility
Wisconsin law keeps covered electronics out of the trash and out of landfills and incinerators, and the state programme that takes them, E-Cycle Wisconsin, is delivered through registered collection sites and manufacturer mail-back programmes that each set their own hours and fees, so confirm the site and its charge before delivering anything.
When & how
Find a registered collection site or a manufacturer mail-back programme through the state directory and confirm its hours and charge first, and never put the item in a City cart or in a bulky waste pile.
Get it ready
The items that cannot go in Wisconsin trash include televisions, desktop, laptop, netbook and tablet computers, computer monitors, desktop printers including those that scan, fax or copy and 3D printers, video game consoles, computer accessories such as keyboards, mice, speakers and external drives, DVD and video players including DVRs, television accessories such as remotes, receivers, cords, cables, security cameras and home theater speakers, fax machines, cell phones and major appliances including air conditioners, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, ovens, dehumidifiers, furnaces, boilers, water heaters and microwave ovens. Back up and erase personal data before a device leaves the house, because deleting files alone does not clear a device.

Scrap metal and metal items

Special rules apply

Metal items go out with a bulky waste pick-up, but the recycling programme refuses scrap aluminium and pots and pans, so the exact item should be confirmed first.

City cost & eligibility
The bulky waste rules cover metal piping cut to three foot lengths and the appliance programme covers white goods, while the published recycling list marks scrap aluminium and pots and pans as not recyclable, so call 262-653-4050 and confirm whether the item belongs on a bulky pick-up, with an appliance sticker or elsewhere.
When & how
Confirm the item on 262-653-4050, then book it onto a bulky waste pick-up on the regular collection day or book an appliance pick-up with a sticker if it is a white good.
Get it ready
Cut metal piping to three foot lengths with the ends safe to handle, keep the metal out of the recycling cart because scrap aluminium and pots and pans are not recyclable in the City programme, and keep cans and metal food containers in the recycling instead.

Carts out the evening before and back in the next morning

Garbage goes in the brown automated cart in plastic bags with the lid closed and recycling goes loose in the blue cart, and neither belongs outside the cart, because anything set out beside a cart is not collected outside the weeks the department publicises. Carts and recyclables go to the curb no earlier than 6:30 p.m. the evening before the collection day and no later than 6 a.m. on the day, clear of trees, telephone poles and other obstacles and reachable from the street, and empty or tagged carts come back in by 8 a.m. the day after collection. A cart with garbage and recycling mixed together is not collected, recycling runs every other week on the same day as the garbage on route A or route B, and a household that believes it was missed should wait until after 1 p.m. on the collection day before calling 262-653-4050.

What a bulky pile has to look like

A bulky pick-up is limited to five cubic yards or thirty bags in an area no larger than fifteen feet by three feet by three feet, every bag, can or bundle stays under forty pounds, each item has to fit through a four foot by four foot truck opening and be liftable waist high by two people, and nothing may be left loose. Carpet, padding and rugs are rolled into three foot sections, windows no larger than four feet square have an X taped across both sides, board material is cut to four feet by four feet or smaller, and lumber, PVC and metal piping is cut to three foot lengths with nails pulled or bent over. The pile sits in its own place away from the carts, trees, parked cars, hydrants and poles, in winter cleared of ice and snow, and anything left over comes off the curb by 8 a.m. the day after, with the City's four free pick-ups a year turning into a published charge for each additional one.

City waste and recycling collection page with the cart rules, the bulky waste allowance and preparation rules, the appliance sticker programme, the brush season, the tire tickets and the yard waste bag rules

What a bulky pick-up will not take

The City does not collect yard waste or recycling in a bulky pile, hazardous or liquid waste such as paint, tanks of any type such as propane, oxygen or gas unless they are cut in half, pianos or organs, cast iron bath tubs, glass patio doors, camper tops or truck caps, boats, concrete, stone, brick, asphalt and masonry, sand, dirt and clay, or any item that does not meet the preparation rules. A pile with recyclables mixed into it may be tagged and left behind until the recyclables are removed.

Wisconsin keeps electronics out of the trash

It is illegal in Wisconsin to throw away certain electronics, and the state list covers televisions, computers, monitors, printers, video game consoles, accessories, video players, fax machines, cell phones and major appliances including air conditioners, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, ovens, dehumidifiers, furnaces, boilers, water heaters and microwave ovens. Households and K-12 schools use E-Cycle Wisconsin, a manufacturer-funded statewide programme delivered through registered collection sites and mail-back programmes, and each site sets its own hours and charges, so the household confirms the site before delivering anything and protects personal data on the device first.

A household that would rather haul its own bulky material or tires instead of waiting for a curbside day.

A household with a television, computer, monitor, printer or another covered electronic device that cannot go in the trash.

Kenosha residents have two City sites for the material that does not go in the carts. The bulk and recycling drop-off site at 1001 50th Street takes bulky material and tires with tickets bought online, on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., except that it closes whenever the dumpsters fill, and tires are limited to four at a time. The yard waste and brush drop-off site at 4071 88th Avenue takes yard waste and brush from April through November, Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it is closed Sundays and holidays. Can electronics go in the trash in Kenosha?

No. Wisconsin makes it illegal to throw away certain electronics, and many cannot go to a Wisconsin landfill or incinerator at all. Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, video game consoles, computer accessories, video players, television accessories, fax machines, cell phones and major appliances are on the state list of electronics to recycle, and households use a registered E-Cycle Wisconsin collection site or a manufacturer mail-back programme, confirming the site's hours and fees first because they vary.Official guidance
