The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Waukegan contracts its curbside collection to LRS, and the contract shapes the whole weekly routine. Garbage, recycling and in season yard waste come on the same day, one bulk item can sit beside the cart each week, and anything heavier than 50 pounds or larger than that single item has to be scheduled and paid for directly. Mattresses are collected only when they are wrapped in plastic, and appliances are never a routine curbside item because LRS preschedules and prepays them. The material that cannot go in a cart has two homes. Electronics go to the city dumpster at Public Works or to one of the free SWALCO year-round drop-offs for county residents, and tires, off the rim, go to a separate city dumpster on the same Public Works yard. Household chemicals, paint, batteries and bulbs go to SWALCO with an appointment, and leftover paint also has the statewide PaintCare network.

Household garbage and recycling

Accepted with preparation

LRS collects household garbage and recycling once a week from the city carts, with yard waste on the same service day during the season.

City cost & eligibility
The city bills refuse collection to the resident through the property tax and LRS bills extra containers, special services and the yard waste subscription separately, and no single collection rate is published, so confirm the current charge on the tax bill or with LRS at 844-633-3577.
When & how
Once a week on the address collection day for garbage and recycling, with yard waste on the same day between March 15 and December 15. Containers may go out no earlier than 5 PM the night before and come in by 6 PM on collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the trash inside the container with the lid closed and put the recycling cart within two feet of the curb in a clear area away from cars, mailboxes, light posts and bushes, with the lid hinge facing the house. A contaminated recycling cart is tagged and left until the material is removed, shredding and plastic bags do not belong in the curbside recycling cart, and only the carts provided under the contract are collected.

Bulk items

Accepted with preparation

One bulk item may sit beside the trash cart each week, and anything heavier or larger has to be scheduled and paid for directly.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One bulk item a week is included with the refuse service the household already pays for through the property tax, with no separate collection charge for that single item. Additional items, items over 50 pounds and special services are scheduled in advance and charged directly by LRS.
When & how
Put the single bulk item next to the trash cart on the regular collection day. Anything over 50 pounds, or any additional item, has to be scheduled with LRS at least 24 hours in advance.
Get it ready
Keep the item next to the cart rather than in the street, and call LRS with a photo if the item is heavy, awkward or needs extra labor, because an unscheduled extra item is left behind. Mattresses have to be wrapped in plastic and taped at every corner before they go out.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

A couch, love seat, chair or bed frame is the kind of bulk item the weekly collection takes, one piece at a time.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One furniture piece counts as the single weekly bulk item that is included with the refuse service the household already pays for, with no separate charge for that piece. A second piece or a heavier piece is scheduled and charged directly by LRS.
When & how
Set the piece beside the trash cart on the regular collection day, or schedule it with LRS at least 24 hours ahead if it is a second item or needs extra handling.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole unless it comes apart easily, leave it beside the cart rather than in the street, and note that a sectional counts one piece at a time. Upholstered items should stay dry so they can be lifted safely.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Bedding is a bulk item, and a mattress is only collected once it is wrapped in plastic.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. One mattress or box spring counts as the single weekly bulk item included with the refuse service the household already pays for, with no separate charge for that piece when it is wrapped as required. Additional pieces are scheduled and charged directly by LRS.
When & how
Put the wrapped piece beside the trash cart on the regular collection day, or schedule extra pieces with LRS at least 24 hours in advance.
Get it ready
Wrap the mattress in plastic and tape it securely at every corner with no exposed surface, using mattress wrap or loose plastic that is fully secured. A box spring or a bed frame is named as its own example of a bulk item, so a full set is spread across weeks or scheduled as additional items.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Appliances are not a routine curbside item: LRS preschedules and prepays every appliance and white goods removal.

City cost & eligibility
Appliances have to be prescheduled and prepaid through LRS customer service and no amount is published, so confirm the item, the day and the price on 844-633-3577 before the unit goes out.
When & how
Call LRS customer service to schedule and pay for the appliance pickup, then set the unit out on the agreed day rather than with the ordinary weekly bulk item.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove the door so a child cannot be trapped, and ask LRS when the pickup is booked whether the refrigerant has to be recovered and tagged first, because neither the city nor the hauler publishes a refrigerant step. The SWALCO electronics program refuses refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, so that route is not an option for a cooling unit.

Televisions and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are banned from the landfill and never ride the curbside truck, so they go to the city dumpster at Public Works or to a free SWALCO drop-off for county residents.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Lake County residents at the SWALCO year round electronics drop-off sites, with no appointment and a limit of seven items per visit excluding cords and cables. The city also provides an electronics dumpster at the Public Works yard during posted hours, and the city page publishes no charge for it.
When & how
Use the city dumpster at 1700 N. McAree Road on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. excluding holidays, or one of the SWALCO sites during its posted hours, such as the Wauconda site on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Get it ready
Bring the item free of packaging and manuals, keep it out of the trash and the recycling cart because Illinois bans televisions, monitors, computers and printers from the landfill, and tape the terminals of any rechargeable battery or bag each battery separately. Appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers are refused at the electronics sites.

Construction and remodeling debris

Special rules apply

Remodeling material is not cart waste or a routine bulk item, so it moves as a scheduled special pickup charged by the yard or as a roll-off container.

City cost & eligibility
LRS provides an estimate for a special refuse collection or a DIY construction pickup, and drywall, plywood, paneling, lumber, doors, windows, cabinets, porcelain fixtures, sod, fencing, concrete and rocks are charged by the yard, so confirm the estimate and the preparation instructions before the load goes out.
When & how
Schedule the special pickup with LRS, or arrange a roll-off container for a larger project, and follow the preparation instructions LRS gives for the material.
Get it ready
Separate and stack the material so it can be measured by the yard, keep it out of the garbage and recycling carts and away from the weekly bulk item, and keep hazardous material out of the load entirely because the chemical waste program is a separate appointment based route.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are not named on any published list, so the item is confirmed with the hauler before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No published price covers an exercise machine because no list names the category, so call LRS, describe the machine and ask whether it is accepted as the weekly bulk item or as a special refuse collection with an estimate.
When & how
Confirm the machine first, then either set it out as the single weekly bulk item or schedule the special collection with LRS.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, take off loose weights and the console, and keep the parts together. Leave it off the curb until LRS confirms the route, because an unscheduled extra item is not collected.

Schedule an extra or heavy pickup with LRS

A household with more than one bulk item, an item over 50 pounds, or a sleeper sofa and similar piece that needs extra labor.

Cost & conditions
Extra pickups are charged directly by LRS and no amount is published, so call 844-633-3577 at least 24 hours before the wanted date to schedule the collection and confirm the price.
Arrange it
Call LRS customer service, list the items, send a photo if the item is awkward or heavy, and pay the quoted amount before the items go to the curb.

An item that is not scheduled is left behind, and the single weekly bulk item is the only large item the ordinary collection takes without a call.

Prescheduled appliance and white goods removal

A household replacing a refrigerator, washer, dryer, range or another appliance or white goods item.

Cost & conditions
Appliance removal has to be prepaid and preprescheduled through LRS and the amount is quoted at the time of booking, so confirm the price and the pickup day on 844-633-3577.
Arrange it
Call LRS customer service, describe the unit, pay for the pickup when it is booked, then set the appliance out on the agreed day.

The appliance does not ride with the weekly bulk item, and the county electronics program refuses refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, so a cooling unit has to go through this route or a scrap metal option.

PaintCare retailer drop-off for leftover paint

A household with leftover latex, acrylic or oil based paint that prefers a retailer to an appointment based chemical event.

Cost & conditions
PaintCare is funded by a fee on new paint sales and its site locator lists the participating retailers, but no per container price is published for a drop-off, so call the store ahead to confirm the hours and whether it can take the type and amount of paint.
Arrange it
Use the PaintCare drop-off site locator to find a participating retailer, call ahead to confirm the hours, and bring the paint in its original container with the lid secured.

The program takes architectural paint rather than solvents, pesticides or other household chemicals, and those still go to the SWALCO chemical waste appointment.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Waukegan household that hauls its own material has three routes. Electronics go to the city dumpster at the Public Works yard on McAree Road on weekdays, or to a SWALCO year round drop-off such as the Wauconda site on North Old Rand Road, which is free to Lake County residents with no appointment and a limit of seven items per visit. Tires go to a separate dumpster in the same Public Works yard and have to be off the rims, and the textile bin just outside the gate is open around the clock. Household chemicals, paint, batteries, bulbs and pool products go to the SWALCO facility at 1311 N. Estes Street in Gurnee, which takes residential waste only and works by appointment twice a month except December, with mobile events from April through October. Leftover architectural paint can also go to a PaintCare retailer, and household batteries are free at the SWALCO collection and special material events. Before you book

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How many bulk items can go out each week?

One. LRS accepts a single bulk item beside the trash cart on the regular collection day, such as furniture or carpeting. Additional items placed out the same day need prepayment and prescheduling, and a separate extra pickup is scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.Official guidance

What if the item weighs more than 50 pounds?

Call LRS before it goes out so the right equipment is used, because anything heavier than 50 pounds has to be scheduled. The same call handles a special refuse collection for items needing extra labor, and LRS will give a cost estimate before the pickup.Official guidance

How should a mattress be prepared?

Wrap it in plastic for health and safety and tape the plastic completely on all corners so no part of the mattress is exposed. Mattress wrap is sold online and at grocery, hardware, storage and moving stores, and loose plastic works if it is fully secured.Official guidance

Does a box spring count as its own item?

The hauler lists a bed frame, a box spring and a mattress as separate examples of one bulk item, and only one goes out each week, so a full set either waits for separate weeks or is scheduled as additional items with prepayment and prescheduling.Official guidance

How are appliances collected in Waukegan?

Every appliance or white goods item has to be prescheduled and prepaid through LRS customer service before collection. The unit is then set out on the agreed day, and the charge is billed directly by LRS rather than through the city refuse service.Official guidance

What about a refrigerator or air conditioner?

It follows the same prescheduled appliance route, with the unit emptied and the doors removed. Ask LRS when the pickup is booked whether the refrigerant has to be recovered first, because the county electronics program refuses refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers and no page publishes a degassing step for a home pickup.Official guidance

Where do televisions and electronics go in Waukegan?

The city has an electronics dumpster at the Public Works yard on McAree Road, and SWALCO runs free year round electronics drop-offs for Lake County residents. Electronics are banned from the landfill and are never collected with the regular trash.Official guidance

How many electronic items can one visit bring?

The SWALCO drop-off sites take up to seven electronic items per visit, with no limit on miscellaneous cords and cables, and no appointment is needed during posted hours. Businesses are prohibited, and residents who arrive outside the posted hours are turned away.Official guidance

How is the refuse service billed?

Residents are billed for refuse services through the City of Waukegan, and LRS bills separately only for additional containers, special services and the yard waste subscription. That is why a scheduled extra pickup or an appliance removal is paid directly to the hauler rather than appearing on the city bill.Official guidance

How many recycling carts does a household get?

One recycling cart is provided at no charge, in a 65 or 95 gallon size, with the 65 gallon cart as the default if no preference is given. Additional carts can be rented through LRS customer service, and recyclables are collected on the same day of the week as the garbage.Official guidance

What happens to collection on a holiday?

When a holiday falls on Sunday through Friday the scheduled pickup is delayed by one day, and when a holiday falls on Saturday there is no delay. The holiday list covers New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.Official guidance

Are Christmas trees collected?

Yes. LRS provides an annual Christmas tree collection at no charge from the first service day after Christmas through January 25. Outside that window a tree is handled like other yard waste, and artificial trees, wreath greenery and garland are refused as yard waste.Official guidance

What is a special refuse collection?

It is the route LRS uses for an item that needs extra labor or equipment, such as a sleeper sofa, construction debris or a television console, when it goes beyond the single weekly bulk item. LRS gives a cost estimate and does not guarantee that every item can be collected.Official guidance
