The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.
Flat-screen TVs
Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.
Tube TVs
An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.
TV stands and other electronics
The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Electronics are banned from the landfill and never ride the curbside truck, so they go to the city dumpster at Public Works or to a free SWALCO drop-off for county residents.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Lake County residents at the SWALCO year round electronics drop-off sites, with no appointment and a limit of seven items per visit excluding cords and cables. The city also provides an electronics dumpster at the Public Works yard during posted hours, and the city page publishes no charge for it.
When & how
Use the city dumpster at 1700 N. McAree Road on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. excluding holidays, or one of the SWALCO sites during its posted hours, such as the Wauconda site on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Get it ready
Bring the item free of packaging and manuals, keep it out of the trash and the recycling cart because Illinois bans televisions, monitors, computers and printers from the landfill, and tape the terminals of any rechargeable battery or bag each battery separately. Appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers are refused at the electronics sites.
The city keeps an electronics dumpster and a tire dumpster at 1700 N. McAree Road, both open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. excluding holidays, and tires have to come off the rims. A textile bin sits just outside the gate and is available around the clock. Electronics and tires are never collected with the regular trash.
The SWALCO electronics network is free to Lake County residents with no appointment and a limit of seven items per visit, and the Gurnee household chemical waste drop-off takes chemicals, paint, batteries and bulbs by appointment, twice a month except December, with mobile events from April through October. Electronics are refused at the chemical waste events, and chemical waste is refused at the electronics sites.

Electronics accepted under the SWALCO list, tires that have been removed from the rims, and clothing and textiles collected in the bin outside the gate.
Electronics and tires are never collected with the regular trash. Tires have to be off the rims, and the electronics and tire dumpsters are open only during posted weekday hours excluding holidays. No charge is published on the city page for either dumpster.

Open to Lake County residents only with businesses prohibited, a limit of seven electronic items per visit excluding cords and cables, and no appointment. Air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves, large and small appliances, fluorescent bulbs, paint cans, detectors, alkaline and lead acid batteries are not accepted, and electronics must arrive free of packaging and manuals.
