The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.
Flat-screen TVs
Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.
Tube TVs
An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.
TV stands and other electronics
The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Illinois bans televisions, computer monitors and cellphones from landfills, and Hoffman Estates offers three ways to keep them out: a curbside pickup, a seasonal drop-off at Village Hall, and a weekly collection run by the county solid waste agency. Groot takes two electronic items a week at no cost with a pre-arranged curbside collection, and the seasonal Village Hall drop-off is free for residents of the agency's communities.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Groot collects two electronic items per week at no cost when the pickup is pre-arranged at least 24 hours ahead, and the seasonal Village Hall drop-off and the weekly county collection are free for residents of SWANCC communities with proof of residency. The exception is a tube television weighing more than 50 pounds, which carries a $50 charge on the Groot pickup.
When & how
Call Groot at 847-734-6400 or 800.244.1977 at least 24 hours ahead for the curbside electronics pickup. The seasonal drop-off at Village Hall, 1900 Hassell Road, runs on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon on its 2026 dates from April 6 through November 16, and the county collection at the Glenview Transfer Station, 3 Providence Way in Des Plaines, runs on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. year round.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data from any computer, laptop, tablet or phone before handover, and tape the terminals of rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries because that is required before they go in a collection bin. Keep electronic items out of the recycling toter, and check the seasonal accepted list before loading, because calculators, cameras, microwaves, power tools, shredders, small home appliances, stereo equipment and typewriters are not taken at that site. Small electronics, ink and toner cartridges, bulbs, mercury thermometers and thermostats go to the year-round lobby drop-off at Village Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday north of the tollway, Wednesday south of it
The village splits collection by the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway. Residences north of it are serviced on Mondays, and residences south of it, including those west of Bartlett Road, are serviced on Wednesdays. Because routes can vary weekly and holidays shift the schedule, the village publishes the service area map and delays collection by one day for the remainder of a holiday week.
Schedule the special pickups with Groot before the item goes out
Three special services have to be arranged in advance. Appliance or white goods pickup is scheduled with Groot and runs on Wednesdays at no additional charge. An oversized pickup for a large item or a load over one cubic yard is scheduled with Groot for an estimate and billed by the cubic yard. Electronics pickups are scheduled at least 24 hours ahead, and Groot takes two items a week at no cost. Nothing is left at the curb before the pickup is arranged.

Appliance pickup is published at no additional charge when scheduled in advance and runs on Wednesdays, and two electronic items a week are collected at no cost when the pickup is arranged at least 24 hours ahead. The oversized pickup for a large item or a load over one cubic yard is priced by Groot as an estimate and billed by the cubic yard, so confirm the piece and the price at 847-734-6400.

Every special pickup has to be arranged before the item is set at the curb, and the oversized rate depends on the cubic yardage of the load rather than a flat item price. A tube television weighing more than 50 pounds carries a charge on the electronics pickup rather than the two free item allowance.

Electronics at the seasonal drop-off, which is free for residents of SWANCC communities with proof of residency, plus the year-round lobby bins for small electronics such as cellphones and laptops, printer ink and toner cartridges, CFL and fluorescent light bulbs handed to staff at the help desk, mercury thermometers or wall thermostats in a sealed plastic bag, and batteries with rechargeable and lithium-ion terminals taped.
Calculators, cameras, microwaves, power tools, shredders, small home appliances, stereo equipment and typewriters are named as no longer accepted at the seasonal electronics drop-off, so the accepted list has to be checked before loading. Collections are not offered on national holidays and may be closed in severe weather. Proof of residency is required for the seasonal programme.

Open only to residents of SWANCC communities, and proof of residency is required. The village publishes the Saturday window and the free terms but not an item list for this site, so confirm the material before a trip.
