Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Drop electronics at a listed recycler

A household with a television, monitor, computer, microwave, phone or other electronic device that cannot go in the trash.

Cost & conditions
From $20 for the published charge for a television or monitor of any size at Protech Environmental. Protech Environmental at 1550 Howard St in Elk Grove charges 20.00 for a television or monitor of any size and 20.00 for a microwave, takes computers and cell phones, and charge applies for appliances. The village also lists AVA Recycling, Best Buy at 900 E. Golf Road, the Elk Grove Township Recycling Center and EZ Electronics Recycling with Blue Star Recyclers, and tells residents to call each site because drop off instructions and charges vary.
Arrange it
Choose a listed recycler, call ahead for its instructions and charges, and drop the devices off during its hours.

Electronics are banned from Illinois landfills and the collection contractor will tag any left at the curb, so a television or computer must go to a recycler. The village drop boxes are for household batteries, cell phones and CFL bulbs only.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Schaumburg pays for its basic refuse and recycling program and LRS runs it: a free garbage cart and recycling cart at every home in three sizes, weekly waste and recycling, and seasonal yard waste from April 1 through the second full week of December. Nothing needs a sticker, material goes out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before from April through September and 4 p.m. from October through March, and everything is at the curb by 7 a.m. Cleaning out means working inside the included allowance: two cubic yards of extra material and up to two bulk items, each under 50 pounds and under two cubic yards, with mattresses wrapped in plastic and a queen or king set split over two weeks, carpet rolled no wider than four feet, broken glass boxed and labeled, grills emptied of fuel, and toilets separated. Anything bigger is arranged and billed through LRS at 844-633-3577, which also does a separate major appliance collection at 25.81 per appliance. Electronics are illegal in the Illinois trash and get tagged at the curb, so televisions, monitors, computers and microwaves go to a listed local recycler such as Protech Environmental in Elk Grove, where a television or monitor of any size is 20.00 and a microwave is 20.00, while household batteries, cell phones and CFL bulbs go to the village drop boxes at Temporary Village Hall, Engineering and Public Works or the Al Larson Cultural Center. Hazardous products never go in the refuse: paint, gasoline, pesticides, antifreeze and pressurized tanks go to the Naperville household hazardous waste facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive, open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.
