Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove doors and lids that could trap a child or an animal, and keep it out of the street, off the storm drain and clear of hydrants, poles, mailboxes and meters. Do not leave an appliance in the green cart, and confirm before putting out an appliance produced by a contractor or a clean-out, because the proposed revisions exclude contractor material and clean-out debris from residential collection.
Garbage goes in the city-issued green cart, bagged, with the lid closed and the arrows on the lid facing the street. Carts are out before 6:00 AM on the collection day. Items left outside the cart are not collected, overfilled or badly placed carts are not serviced, and each residence is issued one 95-gallon cart, with a second cart available for a fee billed to the utility account. One neat pile per residence, with green waste stacked apart
Trash collection covers yard material such as leaves, limbs and grass clippings plus bulky items such as furniture and appliances, in one pile per residence. Stack it neatly at the curb rather than in the street, leave room for the boom truck, and keep the pile clear of hydrants, utility poles, signposts, mailboxes, water meters and transformers. Limbs are limited to 5 feet long, green waste is stacked separately from bulky items, and a pile the crew judges excessively large may be left behind.
Three categories are refused at the curb, and more are proposed
Construction and demolition debris, tires and commercial waste are not accepted in Dothan's curbside collection. The ordinance revision package presented on August 4, 2026 would extend that list to building materials except minor owner repairs, contractor-generated debris, landscape debris, dirt, rocks, concrete and bricks, tires and vehicle parts, eviction and move-out debris and estate clean-outs, and hazardous refuse, all of which the owner or producer would have to remove at their own expense. The same package proposes a minimum fee for collecting noncompliant material.
