Couch & furniture removal in DothanCity collection Furniture is named in Dothan's bulk item list, so a couch, sofa, table, dresser or desk goes out with the weekly trash pile under the current rules, or through the request-based bulky route if the city adopts its August 2026 proposal. Mattress & bed removal in DothanCity collection Dothan's published bulk list names furniture and appliances but does not name mattresses or box springs, so a mattress is not covered by an item rule the city has published. The practical route is the bulky pile or a requested collection, and Environmental Services has to confirm that a mattress is accepted before it goes out. No city page read for this guide publishes a mattress charge or names mattresses as an accepted bulk item, so confirm acceptance and the current charge with Environmental Services at (334) 615-3820 before setting one out.

The local disposal guide
Dothan collects waste from the curb three ways under one account. The Environmental Services Division of Public Works provides weekly garbage in a city green cart, weekly trash that covers yard material and bulky items like furniture and appliances, and a voluntary blue-cart recycling service, and it runs the city landfill. The published trash limits are one pile per residence, neatly stacked at the curb rather than in the street, with limbs no longer than 5 feet and no thicker than 8 inches, and construction or demolition debris, tires and commercial waste are refused. Items that the recycling programme will not take, including electronics, furniture and carpet, are sent to the city landfill on Burkett Road for special handling. Public Works and Finance presented an ordinance revision package to the City Commission on August 4, 2026 that would move bulky collection to a call-in service ticket, keep green waste weekly, end curbside recycling pickup while keeping the drop-off centres, and change the monthly account charge, so confirm the current route with Environmental Services at (334) 615-3820.

Bulky items such as furniture and appliances ride with Dothan's once-a-week trash collection, which allows one pile per residence, neatly stacked at the curb rather than in the street. The city's August 2026 ordinance proposal would move bulky items to a request-only service ticket through Environmental Services, so a resident should call before building the pile.
Furniture is named in Dothan's bulk item list, so a couch, sofa, table, dresser or desk goes out with the weekly trash pile under the current rules, or through the request-based bulky route if the city adopts its August 2026 proposal.
Dothan's published bulk list names furniture and appliances but does not name mattresses or box springs, so a mattress is not covered by an item rule the city has published. The practical route is the bulky pile or a requested collection, and Environmental Services has to confirm that a mattress is accepted before it goes out.
Appliances are named in Dothan's bulk item list, so a refrigerator, washer, dryer, oven or air conditioner goes out with the weekly trash pile under the current rules rather than into the green cart. No separate appliance fee is published, and the city's August 2026 proposal does not carve appliances out of the bulky route.
Electronics are prohibited in Dothan's recycling programme. The Recyclable Items page directs prohibited material to the City of Dothan Municipal Landfill on Burkett Road for special handling and disposal, while the RECYCLE page instead points to one of the local landfills listed under its landfill tab, and no curbside electronics collection or published electronics fee exists. The city landfill page also says the sanitary landfill is closed, so this route has to be confirmed before a resident loads a vehicle.
Exercise equipment is not named in Dothan's bulk item list, the city's recycling lists or the ordinance revision presentation, so a treadmill, weight bench or home gym is not covered by a published item rule and has to be confirmed with Environmental Services.
The city refuses construction and demolition debris, and its August 2026 ordinance proposal goes further: building materials except minor owner repairs, contractor-generated debris, landscape debris, dirt, rocks, concrete and bricks, and eviction, move-out and estate clean-out debris would all have to be removed by the owner or producer at their own expense. Two private permitted construction and demolition landfills appear on the city's own landfill page.
The handoff matters
Garbage goes in the city-issued green cart, bagged, with the lid closed and the arrows on the lid facing the street. Carts are out before 6:00 AM on the collection day. Items left outside the cart are not collected, overfilled or badly placed carts are not serviced, and each residence is issued one 95-gallon cart, with a second cart available for a fee billed to the utility account. Paperwork is handled by Environmental Services at 281 Complex Drive, Suite 1, by phone at (334) 615-3820.

Stack it neatly at the curb rather than in the street, leave room for the boom truck, and keep the pile clear of hydrants, utility poles, signposts, mailboxes, water meters and transformers. Limbs are limited to 5 feet long, green waste is stacked separately from bulky items, and a pile the crew judges excessively large may be left behind.

The city's current pages treat bulky items as part of the once-a-week trash collection with one pile per residence. The ordinance revision package presented to the City Commission on August 4, 2026 proposes that bulky items be collected only on request, with residents contacting Environmental Services to create a service ticket. Call (334) 615-3820 and follow whichever rule the city confirms for your address.Official guidance
No. The green cart takes bagged household waste only, and items left outside it are not collected. A couch is a bulky item, so it belongs in the curbside trash pile, neatly stacked and kept out of the street, or in the request-based bulky collection if the city requires one for your address.Official guidance
Appliances are named as bulky items in the city's trash guidance, so they go out with the curbside pile rather than in the green cart. The city publishes no separate appliance price, and it asks residents to keep the pile neatly stacked and clear of the street, hydrants and poles.Official guidance
No. Electronics are on the prohibited list for both city recycling pages, alongside carpet, furniture, glass and Styrofoam. The recyclable items page sends those prohibited items to the City of Dothan Municipal Landfill at 1290 Burkett Road for special handling, and Environmental Services can confirm the current drop-off arrangement at (334) 615-3820.Official guidance
Bulky items ride with the residential solid waste account, which the city bills monthly, and no separate pile price is published. Public Works and Finance presented an ordinance revision package on August 4, 2026 that would raise that monthly charge, add a fee for a second garbage cart, move bulky items to a call-in service ticket and stop curbside recycling pickup while keeping the drop-off centres, so ask Environmental Services at (334) 615-3820 for the current figure. Dropcurb prices a pickup separately and shows the total at checkout.Official guidance
Environmental Services at 281 Complex Drive, Suite 1 handles residential garbage, trash and recycling questions, missed collections, additional carts and the city landfill, at (334) 615-3820 or publicworks@dothan.org. The office is open Monday to Thursday from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and Friday crews handle missed collections only.Official guidance
The city publishes a holiday sanitation schedule because garbage, trash and recycling days are often affected. In the 2026 calendar, Juneteenth on Friday June 19 and Independence Day on Friday July 3 are regular schedule weeks, while Thanksgiving week from November 23 and Christmas week from December 21 shift Monday and Tuesday pickups to the Monday, Wednesday to the Tuesday and Thursday to the Wednesday, and no recycling is collected in either of those weeks.Official guidance
Recycling is voluntary and limited to cardboard, mixed paper, plastics 1 through 5, aluminum beverage cans and steel cans, placed loose rather than bagged. Carpet, furniture, electronics, glass of any kind, Styrofoam, yard waste, needles and hazardous material are prohibited, and the city sends those prohibited items to the municipal landfill on Burkett Road for special handling instead.Official guidance
