Mattresses and box springs are named in the city's residential debris policy as man-made items that may go out no sooner than one day before the scheduled pickup, with the service limited to residential property and each item limited to 300 pounds.
City cost & eligibility
The debris policy publishes no mattress charge, but it assesses 10 dollars per cubic yard to the property owner for yard trash beyond four cubic yards, so Public Works confirms any charge for the set at 251-968-1156.
When & how
Put the set out no sooner than one day before the scheduled pickup, and notify the City Street Department or Public Works on 251-968-1156 before any item that is not one of the policy's listed examples.
Get it ready
Set the set where the debris truck collects rather than in a garbage container, keep each piece within the 300 pound per item limit and under ten feet long, and keep household garbage out of the pile.
Debris is out the night before the route day or by 6:15 a.m.
The residential debris pass is a weekly route rather than an appointment, so no call is needed and the material has to be at the collection point the night before the scheduled route day or in the morning by 6:15 a.m. Only single-family residential homes qualify for the service, and the pile has to be household material from that address.
Garbage containers sit close to the edge but clear of the lanes
Inside the corporate limits, containers go one to five feet from the street or alley edge with clearance from vehicle and bicycle lanes, no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before collection, and come back in by 7 p.m. on the collection day. Beach Boulevard properties on Alabama Highway 182 use designated collection points instead, staged no earlier than 4 a.m. and removed by 6 p.m. the same day.
Containers are stored behind the front building line
When a container is not staged for collection, it stays behind the front building line, and a property over one acre keeps its containers at least 100 feet from the public right of way. In designated areas a waste management crew handles container placement and retrieval under a city council resolution, so residents there do not stage the container themselves.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Can you pick up my old mattress when my new one arrives?+
You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed.
