Book the unwanted bags and boxes left after packing. Choose an available pickup day before you hand back the keys, and arrange to have them outside.

A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Republic Services collects bulky items for Carlsbad residents three times a year, with up to five items at each pickup. An item qualifies when it is too large for the curbside cart and weighs less than 200 pounds, and the published list covers appliances, furniture, carpet, mattresses, a weight bench, yard trimmings and electronic waste.
The handoff matters
The city publishes a specific handling rule for the items that need one: wrap mattresses in plastic or a disposal cover, cut carpet into four foot lengths and bundle it into a single roll, disassemble gym sets and swing sets and bundle them, call Republic Services about an older refrigerator that may need freon removal and tagging, and bundle and tie yard trimmings or non-treated wood waste with no more than four bundles per pickup. Everything goes in the location the agent specifies when the pickup is scheduled.

Each of those needs its own route rather than a spot in the pile.
