City cost & eligibility
A bulky pickup is covered by the account's annual allowance, and the city rate schedule effective July 1, 2026 prices a bulky item containing Freon at $59.06 per item on the same trip, with a further bulky collection at $73.81 for the first cubic yard. The county's appliance directory warns that fees may apply depending on the unit's condition, so confirm before the appliance leaves the house.
When & how
Book the pickup at least 48 hours ahead with Waste Management at (530) 893-4777 and say the unit holds refrigerant, or take it to Neal Road, where refrigerators are accepted as hazardous waste and the scale house explains the procedure.
Get it ready
Empty the unit before it goes out, and keep refrigerant, antifreeze, used motor oil and gasoline out of any landfill load, because the county refuses all of them there. Paint, cleaners and batteries belong at the household hazardous waste facility instead.
A bulky pickup is booked by phone and confirmed by the allowance
Waste Management runs the city's bulky collection, so the route is a phone call rather than an online request: (530) 893-4777, at least 48 hours before the usual collection day, with the items named when the appointment is made. Everything has to be curbside by 5 a.m. on the collection day. The account's annual allowance is what decides whether the pickup is included or billed, and the city rate schedule effective July 1, 2026 prices further collections, further cubic yards and an item containing Freon separately.
Carts go out by 6 a.m. and nothing else rides along
Trash, recycling and green waste come out on the same weekly collection day with the container against the curb and at least three feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other obstacles, and the container goes back in the same day. All trash is bagged and the lid has to close, because overflow or material left outside can be billed or left behind. Construction waste, auto parts, tires, household hazardous waste and medical or electronic waste do not belong in any cart.
What the bulky pickup and the landfill will not take
Tires, construction debris, medical waste and household hazardous waste are refused in a bulky pickup, and the county landfill refuses liquid paints, antifreeze, used motor oil, freon gas, compressed gases, pool chemicals, ammunition and explosives on top of that. Paints, cleaners, automotive fluids, batteries, fluorescent lights and electronic waste go instead to the Butte Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1101 Marauder Street, which is free to county households that show a garbage or utility bill and is open Fridays and Saturdays.

The county's dumping guidelines list municipal solid waste that includes furniture, carpet, textiles, glass, porcelain and ceramics, yard trimmings, wood waste, sheetrock and drywall, and dirt, concrete, asphalt, construction rebar and rocks with recycling on site, plus non-asbestos roofing and shingles. Tires are taken as a special waste, and car batteries, refrigerators and fluorescent tubes are accepted as hazardous waste with the scale house explaining the procedure. The county's materials directory also names this site for mattresses, box springs, major appliances, unpainted wood and carpet.
Liquid paints including latex and other water-based paint, freon gas, air-conditioning refrigerant, antifreeze, used motor oil and lubricating oil, gasoline, compressed gases, pool chemicals, pesticides, ammunition, explosives, radioactive material and friable asbestos are refused. Payment is cash, local checks or credit cards only, with no debit cards and no third-party checks, and the site cannot take fire debris that has not been screened for hazardous waste, so ask at the scale house when a load is unusual.
Every day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on Easter, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, with Christmas Eve open from 7 a.m. to noon.
