No charge. One free bulky goods collection each calendar year per residential account covers mattresses and box springs as bulky items. Drop-off at a mattress collection site is a separate route and the city states that its costs vary by location.
When & how
Schedule the annual bulky pickup at least a week ahead for your regular collection day. The city also points to mattress collection events such as the Earth Day and Make a Difference Day recycling events, and to the Bye Bye Mattress site list for drop-off locations.

Keep the mattress dry and put it out the night before or by 4 a.m. on the collection day at the end of the driveway where it meets the sidewalk or grass area. If you are buying a new mattress, ask the retailer to take the old one, because California retailers have to offer take back when they deliver new units.

Everything has to be bagged, boxed, bundled or otherwise contained, and bundles must be no longer than four feet and no heavier than 60 pounds.
The bulky goods collection has to be scheduled with Republic Services, with a minimum of one week of notice, and the city page asks residents to allow two weeks. The pickup happens on your regular collection day, it is once per calendar year, and the office should be told at least one business day ahead to cancel or reschedule.

A household with one or two large items such as a couch, mattress, appliance or television, plus up to two cubic yards of contained material, that can wait for a scheduled pickup.
