El Monte bulky waste is collected on the normal trash day, and the pickup has to be scheduled at least one day in advance, so nothing should be sitting at the curb in the hope of a collection. Every single-family home has a brown trash cart, a blue recycling cart and a green cart for green waste and food waste, collected by Valley Vista Services on the regular service day. If a collection day falls on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas, collection moves to the following day for the rest of that week. Organics are mandatory under the city's ordinance 3006, so green waste and food waste do not belong in the brown cart.
