Get it ready
Empty the unit before it goes out, keep it off the curb outside a scheduled pickup, and never put a refrigerant appliance in the black trash barrel, because the refrigerant recovery is what the fee covers.
A bulky pickup is an appointment with a listed load
Bulky items do not go out with the barrels. The service is free for eligible households through Republic Services, allows up to three pickups a calendar year with up to 10 items per pickup, and is scheduled by phone, so the resident lists the items when booking and sets them out for the arranged day. Refrigerators and air conditioners are the exception to the free rule, because the refrigerant has to be recovered for a fee.
Community cleanup days take bulky items but refuse three streams
The city and Republic host community cleanup days where residents unload their own bulky items, including appliances, furniture, mattresses and carpets, and Public Works staff help elderly and disabled residents. Three streams are refused at those events: electronic waste such as televisions, printers, radios and computers, hazardous waste including paint and oil, and green waste such as grass clippings and leaves. Electronics and hazardous material go to the county collection centers instead, and yard waste goes in the brown barrel.
