Keep the mattress at 60 pounds or less, and note that the hauler's worked example treats a mattress and a box spring as two separate collections.
A residential account gets four free bulky item collections a year, each covering one large item or up to seven bags, and the service account must be in your name. Each item must weigh 60 pounds or less, since anything heavier counts as two collections, each piece of furniture, large carpet or appliance counts as one collection, and the driver must be able to load it safely.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

One large item or up to seven bags per collection, a 60 pound limit per item, nothing longer than six feet, and no liquids, hazardous waste, televisions, monitors, ashes, dirt, rock, concrete or asphalt.
Novato's self-haul route is the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 7576 Redwood Blvd, which serves Novato residents without an appointment on four days a month and takes electronic waste, televisions, paint, batteries, motor oil, sharps and small propane tanks. Residents outside Novato use the county facility in San Rafael, which excludes this city. Household batteries can also go in a sealed clear bag on top of the blue recycling cart on collection day, and a free residential electronic waste pickup runs on Mondays and Thursdays except holidays.
