A refrigerator, stove or dresser is the City's own example of a single bulky item, and a washer and dryer booked together counts as one item, so an appliance leaves on the appointment pickup. The county household hazardous waste program refuses white goods such as stoves and refrigerators, so the bulky item pickup is the route that carries them.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included with the residential collection service inside the four item allowance and the one request allowed in each two-month billing cycle, up to six requests a calendar year. An extra pickup in the same cycle is billed at the special pick-up rate.
When & how
Book with Athens Services at (888) 314-0061 and have the appliance curbside by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, out the night before if that is easier, and leave it out until 4:00 p.m.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, secure or remove the doors on a refrigerator or freezer, and keep the appliance out of the carts and out of the household hazardous waste load, because the county program will not take white goods.
Book the appointment and have the items curbside by 6 a.m.
Bulky items are collected by appointment on the regular collection day, so the request goes to Athens Services in advance. Items go out the night before or no later than 5:00 a.m. on the scheduled date, must be curbside by 6:00 a.m. and should stay out until 4:00 p.m., because one truck collects the metal items and a second truck collects the non-metal items later the same day.
A single appointment carries a maximum of four large items, and the split has to be two metal items and two non-metal items, with up to ten bundles of wood, tree limbs or carpet rolls allowed alongside them. A table and chairs counts as one item, a washer and dryer counts as one item, and a sofa and love seat counts as one item, which is how a household fits a set inside the four item ceiling.
The City does not accept hazardous waste materials on the bulky item service, including paint, paint thinners, tires, hypodermic needles, motor oil, pesticides and herbicides. The hauler also bars automotive parts, batteries, cleaning products, construction and demolition waste, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, electronic waste, medical waste, paints and solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, pool chemicals, radiological waste, sharps, thermometers, thermostats and used motor oil from every container.
Chemicals and electronics go to the county, not the landfill
Electronics are banned from the landfill, and household chemicals are taken free at county collection events and permanent centers. Bring items in a sturdy box with lids sealed, keep products in their original containers and never mix them, and note that transporting more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste in a personal vehicle is illegal. Households stay in the vehicle at the event while staff unload the trunk, and containers are left behind.
The county facility weighs every load at the scales and takes payment in cash, by credit or debit card or on a pre-arranged account, with no checks. Every customer outside a vehicle has to wear a safety vest, which can be bought at the scale house, loads are inspected, and the maximum unloading time is 30 minutes. Whole tires, liquids, hazardous material, oil, treated wood, asbestos, pharmaceuticals and e-waste are rejected.
