The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Richmond runs its collection through Republic Services, and the route for a couch, a mattress, an appliance or a treadmill is the on-call bulky waste pickup: households in single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes get up to three no-charge pickups a year, arranged in advance at 510.262.7100, with a choice of fifteen 35 gallon bags, four 95 gallon bags, five e-waste items, 1.8 cubic yards of loose waste, or, once a year, a large item pickup of up to three pieces. Everything on the pickup is limited to 200 pounds an item, and construction or demolition debris, hazardous waste and commercial-sized appliances are refused. Richmond also runs free Neighborhood Dumpster Days in every neighborhood, a free household hazardous waste drop-off at 101 Pittsburg Ave or the El Cerrito Recycling Center with a 15 gallon or 125 pound limit per vehicle, and a free drop-off for up to three mattresses a month at that same Pittsburg Avenue facility.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Richmond households in single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes may schedule up to three bulky waste pickups at no charge each calendar year, and each pickup has a choice of fifteen 35 gallon bags, four 95 gallon bags, five e-waste items, up to 1.8 cubic yards of uncontainerized garbage or organic waste, or, once a year, a large item pickup of up to three large items.

City cost & eligibility

Get it ready

Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it within the 200 pound item limit, and do not take a refrigerator to a dumpster day, because the city's prohibited list sends refrigerators, batteries, electronics, tires, concrete, oil, paint, propane tanks and treated wood to the West County hazardous waste facility instead.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronic waste is a published pickup option: a household may use five e-waste items as one of its bulky pickups, and the hauler's flyer counts up to five e-waste items as one bulky item. Televisions, laptops and microwaves cannot go to a Neighborhood Dumpster Day, and the city routes that material to the West County hazardous waste facility.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the up-to-three no-charge bulky pickups a year, where five e-waste items count as one pickup, and free to Richmond residents at the West County household hazardous waste drop-off.
When & how
Book the e-waste pickup with Republic Services at 510.262.7100 at least 10 workdays ahead, or take the devices to the West County household hazardous waste facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave or the El Cerrito Recycling Center.
Get it ready
Box small e-waste peripherals as the flyer requires, wipe personal data before handover, and keep electronics out of the dumpster days and the carts, because the city lists e-waste as prohibited at those events.

Construction and demolition material

Not on the regular city route

The hauler's bulky flyer refuses construction and demolition waste outright, and the city's prohibited list sends concrete and treated wood to the hazardous waste facility rather than a curbside pickup. No municipal construction collection or drop-off is published for a household project.

City cost & eligibility
No municipal rate covers construction or demolition debris, because the bulky program refuses it and the city publishes no construction drop-off for residents. A private container or hauling company quotes its own price, which has to be arranged before the work starts.
When & how
Arrange a private container or hauling company, and note that concrete and treated wood appear on the city's prohibited list with the other materials it routes to the West County hazardous waste facility.
Get it ready
Keep construction and demolition debris, concrete, treated wood, cement, rocks and dirt off the bulky pickup and out of the dumpster days, so the rest of the load is not refused or charged.

Exercise equipment

Accepted with preparation

Exercise equipment is named outright in the city's published bulky item examples, so a treadmill or weight machine leaves on an on-call bulky pickup without needing a confirmation call.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the up-to-three no-charge bulky pickups a year for single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes, with the machine at 200 pounds or less.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 510.262.7100 at least 10 workdays ahead, and use the large item pickup option, which is available once a year for up to three pieces, if the machine is heavy.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart so it can be handled safely, and keep it under the 200 pound item limit, which the flyer applies to every bulky item.

Household hazardous waste, batteries and tires

Accepted with preparation

Richmond residents dispose of household hazardous waste free at the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Richmond or the El Cerrito Recycling Center. The city lists batteries, e-waste, oven cleaner, refrigerators, bug spray, fluorescent lights, paint, tires, concrete, oil, propane tanks and treated wood as prohibited at the neighborhood dumpster days and says the West County facility takes most of them free.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Richmond residents at either the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Richmond or the El Cerrito Recycling Center, with each visit limited to no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of material per vehicle and identification or proof of residency required.
When & how
Use the West County facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave in Richmond, open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a midday closure from noon to 12:30 PM, or the El Cerrito Recycling Center.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of the trash, recycling and organics carts, because the city states it is illegal to put paint, pesticides, batteries, electronics or fluorescent bulbs in them, and bring identification or proof of residency to the drive-through drop-off.

Pick one of the five published options for the pickup

Each on-call bulky pickup uses one of five options: up to fifteen 35 gallon bags with a 50 pound per bag maximum, four 95 gallon bags with the same maximum, five e-waste items, up to 1.8 cubic yards of uncontainerized garbage or organic waste, or, a maximum of once a year, a large item pickup of up to three large items. The hauler's flyer caps each item at 200 pounds, requires small e-waste peripherals to be boxed, and warns that anything beyond three bulky items carries an extra charge.

Dumpster days run on a postcard and a fixed window

Every Richmond neighborhood receives a free dumpster day, running from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm or until the dumpsters fill, at one to four locations, with postcards mailed two to four weeks ahead and events in spring, summer and fall. Businesses are not eligible. Curbside pickup is only for seniors and residents with disabilities, requested from the Abatement Division before 12:00 pm on the Wednesday before the event for pickup on the Friday before, limited to one pickup truck load per household with identification checked.

Richmond's household routes are the on-call bulky pickup and three county-style drop-offs. Household hazardous waste is free at the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave or the El Cerrito Recycling Center, limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle, and up to three mattresses a month are free at the Pittsburg Avenue facility for Richmond and neighbouring West Contra Costa residents. What can I bring to a Richmond Neighborhood Dumpster Day?

The city accepts box springs and mattresses, glass, small appliances, broken toys, household items, tables, clothing and bagged yard waste at a dumpster day, which runs from 8:00 am to noon or until the dumpsters fill at one to four neighborhood locations. Batteries, e-waste, refrigerators, fluorescent lights, paint, tires, concrete, oil, propane tanks and treated wood are prohibited there and go to the West County hazardous waste facility instead, and businesses are not eligible.Official guidance
