Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Household appliances and water heaters are named in the city's bulky item examples, so an appliance leaves on an on-call bulky pickup. A refrigerator cannot go to a Neighborhood Dumpster Day, because the city lists refrigerators among the prohibited items there and points those materials at the West County hazardous waste facility.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the up-to-three no-charge bulky pickups a year for single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes, with each item at 200 pounds or less. Commercial-sized appliances are refused on the pickup.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 510.262.7100 at least 10 workdays before the collection day to schedule the pickup.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it within the 200 pound item limit, and do not take a refrigerator to a dumpster day, because the city's prohibited list sends refrigerators, batteries, electronics, tires, concrete, oil, paint, propane tanks and treated wood to the West County hazardous waste facility instead.

Pick one of the five published options for the pickup

Each on-call bulky pickup uses one of five options: up to fifteen 35 gallon bags with a 50 pound per bag maximum, four 95 gallon bags with the same maximum, five e-waste items, up to 1.8 cubic yards of uncontainerized garbage or organic waste, or, a maximum of once a year, a large item pickup of up to three large items. The hauler's flyer caps each item at 200 pounds, requires small e-waste peripherals to be boxed, and warns that anything beyond three bulky items carries an extra charge.

A long list is never collected on the clean-up

The hauler publishes the material it never takes: liquids of any kind, cactus, ivy, palm and yucca, fluorescent bulbs, lamps and tubes, paint cans, tied boards, motor oil, fencing, solvents, pesticide containers, mirrors, metal parts, mercury containing thermostats and timers, broken or window glass, car parts, empty gas tanks, cement, rocks and dirt, household, car, rechargeable and button batteries, tree stumps, asbestos, medical sharps and hypodermic needles, and boxed or bundled debris.

Dumpster days run on a postcard and a fixed window

Every Richmond neighborhood receives a free dumpster day, running from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm or until the dumpsters fill, at one to four locations, with postcards mailed two to four weeks ahead and events in spring, summer and fall. Businesses are not eligible. Curbside pickup is only for seniors and residents with disabilities, requested from the Abatement Division before 12:00 pm on the Wednesday before the event for pickup on the Friday before, limited to one pickup truck load per household with identification checked.

Book a pickup beyond the free allowance

Use the Neighborhood Dumpster Day

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to residents of the neighborhood hosting the event, with postcards mailed two to four weeks ahead. Businesses are not eligible, and curbside pickup is limited to seniors and residents with disabilities.

Drop household hazardous waste for free

A household with paint, pesticides, batteries, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, oil, propane tanks, treated wood or another prohibited item.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Free to Richmond residents at the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Richmond or the El Cerrito Recycling Center, with each visit limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle.
Arrange it
Drive to the West County facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave in Richmond, open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a midday closure from noon to 12:30 PM, or to the El Cerrito Recycling Center, with identification or proof of residency.

The per-visit limit is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle, so a larger load has to be split across visits, and the city lists the material it prohibits in the carts as the material for this route.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Richmond's household routes are the on-call bulky pickup and three county-style drop-offs. A household in a single-family home, duplex, triplex or fourplex can schedule up to three no-charge bulky pickups a year through Republic Services at 510.262.7100, choosing fifteen 35 gallon bags, four 95 gallon bags, five e-waste items, 1.8 cubic yards of loose waste, or a once-a-year large item pickup of up to three pieces, with every item capped at 200 pounds and construction, demolition and hazardous material refused. Everything the pickup refuses has a drop-off: household hazardous waste, batteries, electronics, paint, pesticides, oil, propane tanks, refrigerators and tires go free to the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave, open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a midday closure and a 15 gallon or 125 pound per-vehicle limit, or to the El Cerrito Recycling Center, and up to three mattresses a month go free to that same Pittsburg Avenue address. Each Richmond neighborhood also gets a free dumpster day with postcards two to four weeks ahead, and a project load has no municipal route at all, so it needs a private container. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Richmond.

How much does appliance removal cost in Richmond?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Richmond?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Will Richmond take a refrigerator or a washer?

A household appliance is named in the city's bulky item examples and travels on an on-call bulky pickup booked at 510.262.7100, as long as it is a household-sized unit, because the flyer refuses commercial-sized appliances. A refrigerator cannot go to a Neighborhood Dumpster Day, where the city lists refrigerators as prohibited and directs that material to the West County hazardous waste facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave.Official guidance

Who collects trash and bulky items in Richmond?

Republic Services, the city's hauler and the former Richmond Sanitary Service, runs the carts and the on-call bulky pickup and answers at 510.262.7100 for rates, billing, missed pickups and bulky item scheduling. The City of Richmond Public Works side runs the Neighborhood Dumpster Days and publishes the household hazardous waste and mattress drop-off routes.Official guidance

How do I schedule a bulky pickup in Richmond?

Call Republic Services at 510.262.7100 in advance, at least 10 workdays before the regular collection day, and the items go out for that day. Each pickup uses one of five published options, from fifteen 35 gallon bags to a once-a-year large item pickup of up to three pieces, and a pickup beyond the free allowance is scheduled for a fee.Official guidance

What can Richmond residents drop off for free?

Household hazardous waste is free at the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 101 Pittsburg Ave or the El Cerrito Recycling Center, limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle, and up to three mattresses a month are free at the Pittsburg Avenue facility for Richmond and neighbouring West Contra Costa residents. Each neighborhood also gets a free dumpster day, with postcards mailed two to four weeks ahead.Official guidance

What can I bring to a Richmond Neighborhood Dumpster Day?

The city accepts box springs and mattresses, glass, small appliances, broken toys, household items, tables, clothing and bagged yard waste at a dumpster day, which runs from 8:00 am to noon or until the dumpsters fill at one to four neighborhood locations. Batteries, e-waste, refrigerators, fluorescent lights, paint, tires, concrete, oil, propane tanks and treated wood are prohibited there and go to the West County hazardous waste facility instead, and businesses are not eligible.Official guidance
