The local disposal guide
Salinas households have two published routes for a large item. Republic Services of Salinas, the city collection hauler, collects two large items, ten thirty-two gallon bags, or the equivalent of up to two cubic yards once a year at no charge for a single-family home, and anything past that allowance goes to a Salinas Valley Recycles facility. The Madison Lane recycling center in Salinas takes electronics, up to ten mattresses, carpet and padding, batteries and hazardous waste, and the Johnson Canyon Landfill in Gonzales takes appliance and construction loads at published rates, with appliances that hold no refrigerant, CRT televisions and monitors, electronics and small kitchen appliances all free. The old Sun Street transfer station has permanently closed, so plan around Madison Lane and Johnson Canyon.

The handoff matters
The Salinas bulky pickup requires items to be placed in the street against the curb and away from cars, trees, parked cars and overhead wires. Keep loose or bagged trash, carpet, construction materials, wood, paint, batteries, chemicals and hazardous waste out of the load, because the free pickup refuses them, and never leave a large item at the curb on a day when no collection is scheduled.
Bulky item pickup terms and facility addressesLarge load and bulky item optionsAt a Salinas Valley Recycles facility the charge depends on the material and the weight, so keep mattresses and box springs separate from other waste to stay inside the free ten mattress allowance, keep appliances apart from mixed debris, and separate concrete, asphalt, clean wood and green waste onto their own lines. Secure the load, because an untarped load is charged an additional 50 percent of the fee, and pay by cash, check or card at the scale.
