Appliances are named as bulky items for the yearly city pickup, and the Salinas Valley Recycles fee schedule keeps them separate: a stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer or water heater that holds no refrigerant is free, while a refrigerator or other refrigerant unit is charged per piece.
City cost & eligibility
From $15 per refrigerant appliance at a Salinas Valley Recycles facility, where a refrigerator is $15.00 each and appliances without refrigerant such as stoves, ovens, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers and water heaters are accepted at no charge. Ammonia based appliances are not accepted at all. A unit with refrigerant going to a commercial account is charged at the commercial rate, and the free yearly city pickup takes appliances that fit the two large item or two cubic yard allowance.
When & how
Take the unit to the Johnson Canyon Landfill, open Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 8am to 4pm, or schedule the yearly pickup with Republic Services of Salinas at (831) 775-3840.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors for the trip. Ask whether the unit holds refrigerant before it is loaded, because that decides whether the visit is free, and never put a refrigerant appliance in a load of loose household trash without telling the scale house.
Sort and cover a self-haul load before the scale house
At a Salinas Valley Recycles facility the charge depends on the material and the weight, so keep mattresses and box springs separate from other waste to stay inside the free ten mattress allowance, keep appliances apart from mixed debris, and separate concrete, asphalt, clean wood and green waste onto their own lines. Secure the load, because an untarped load is charged an additional 50 percent of the fee, and pay by cash, check or card at the scale.
Households in the service area drop hazardous items at the collection facility at 1104 Madison Lane at no charge and with no appointment, but the load may not exceed 15 gallons or 125 pounds per month. Bring chemicals in secure containers and do not mix them, and leave explosives, radioactive material, drums, medical waste other than sharps, and unstable chemicals at home. Antifreeze, batteries, motor oil and filters and latex paint have their own program with a five gallon limit.

No charge. One free bulky pickup a year for a single-family home, covering two large items, ten thirty-two gallon bags, or the equivalent of up to two cubic yards. Additional pickups incur a fee.

Call Republic Services of Salinas at (831) 775-3840 or schedule through the hauler's Salinas page, then put the load in the street against the curb away from cars, trees, parked cars and overhead wires.
Loose or bagged trash, carpet, construction materials, wood, paint, batteries, chemicals and hazardous waste are refused, and the allowance will not take a load larger than two cubic yards or more than two large pieces.

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own.
