The local disposal guide
San Marcos collects through EDCO, and bulky items move on two published routes: a per item curbside pickup booked at least two days before the normal collection day, and a free bulky item cleanup coupon that EDCO mails twice a year with its terms printed in the billing newsletter. Furniture, mattresses, appliances and one television or computer monitor are on the acceptable list, while construction debris, concrete, dirt, tires, electronics and hazardous chemicals are refused. Electronic waste, batteries, sharps, used motor oil and grease have a free drop-off at EDCO's Certified Recycling Center on South Las Posas Road, and household hazardous waste goes to the North County Regional facility in Vista.

Residential service is weekly collection of household trash, organics and recyclables from the home and yard. A single family customer gets a 96 gallon gray trash cart, a 64 gallon blue recycling cart and a 96 gallon green organics cart, with additional recycling and organics carts at no extra cost up to the published limits.
EDCO collects large items generated from within the home on a bulky item pickup, set out at the curb or the end of the driveway by 6:00 a.m. on the appointed day and taken by a separate truck. The pickup is offered for a nominal fee per item, and EDCO also mails a free bulky item cleanup coupon twice a year.

Refrigerators and freezers are bulky item examples, and the operator's acceptable list names refrigerators and air conditioners. The resource guide states that these units are charged a higher fee per item because the refrigerant inside them is treated as hazardous waste and needs special handling.
Electronic waste is refused in a bulky item pickup and in every cart, and the city and the operator both send it to EDCO's Certified Recycling Center at 224 S. Las Posas Road, where televisions, computers, cell phones and printers are dropped off for free.
One television or computer monitor is on the operator's acceptable list for a bulky item pickup, even though electronics generally appear on the refusal list for that service, and a television is also free to drop off as electronic waste at EDCO's Certified Recycling Center.
Construction and demolition debris, concrete, rocks, brick and dirt are refused for a bulky item pickup, so a renovation load never goes to the curb. The operator rents temporary dumpsters for one time clean ups and roll off boxes for demolition material and construction debris.
Nothing in this source set names exercise equipment. The bulky list is written as items including but not limited to furniture, carpet, rugs and book shelves, so a machine may qualify as a large item generated from within the home, but the packet asks the reader to confirm the piece before it goes out.
The household hazardous items each have a named local route. Leftover paint is free at PaintCare retail sites, household batteries, sharps and fats, oils and grease go to EDCO's Certified Recycling Center, used motor oil is free at certified locations including that center, and unused medicine goes in the anonymous kiosk at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.
The handoff matters
Set the carts at street level with the wheels against the curb and the arrows on the lids pointing toward the street, and put them out by 6:00 a.m. on the service day or the night before. Keep two feet between carts and three feet from parked cars, mailboxes, trees and poles, keep the carts out of bike lanes, and close the lids rather than overfilling.
City of San Marcos waste and recycling resource guideBook the pickup at least two days before the normal collection day, then set the items at the curb or the end of the driveway by 6:00 a.m. on the appointed day. Wrap a mattress before it goes out, keep each piece where the crew can reach it, and keep hazardous chemicals, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, medical waste, auto parts, tires, concrete, dirt and construction debris out of the pile entirely.
Bulky item pickup: set-out rules, fee and accepted itemsCity of San Marcos waste and recycling resource guideOrder a temporary dumpster for a home improvement or yard clean up, or a roll off box for demolition material and construction debris. EDCO sizes the container by the material and the weight, delivers it and collects it when the work is done, and gives a free estimate by phone, so sort heavy inert material from mixed debris before the box arrives.
