The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Sunnyvale collects garbage and recycling from every residence and business at least once a week and runs the SMaRT Station on Carl Road itself. Large household items come off the curb through an on-call collection that single-family and multi-family residents can schedule twice a year at no additional charge, and the city names furniture, electronics and other bulky items as what it takes. Two extra dumping weekends a year let any resident bring garbage, concrete, demolition material, tires and other non-hazardous loads to the SMaRT Station free of charge, and extra bags can go out with a six dollar tag. Household chemicals and electronic waste never go in the carts, and they drop free at Santa Clara County's weekly hazardous waste events by appointment. Renovation projects face a 65 percent diversion rule tracked in Green Halo, with a penalty for missing the rate.

Bulky items and household junk

Accepted with preparation

Sunnyvale single-family and multi-family residents can schedule an on-call curbside collection twice a year at no additional charge, requested through the city tool by selecting Bulky Item Collection, and the city names furniture, electronics and other bulky items as what it takes.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Two on-call curbside collections a year at no additional charge for residents of single-family or multi-family homes. Extra garbage bags beyond the cart use a purchased tag.
When & how
Request the collection through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool and select Bulky Item Collection, then check the collection schedule in the same tool.
Get it ready
Keep bulky items out of the garbage, recycling and organics carts, and reserve the on-call collection for furniture, electronics and other bulky items the carts cannot take. Extra bagged garbage that does not fit the cart needs a purchased tag instead, on a bag no larger than 35 gallons and under 30 pounds.

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named first among the bulky items the on-call curbside collection takes, so a couch leaves on one of the two free collections a year rather than in a cart.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the two on-call curbside collections a year at no additional charge for single-family and multi-family residents.
When & how
Request the pickup through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool by selecting Bulky Item Collection.
Get it ready
Keep the piece out of the garbage, recycling and organics carts and set it at the curb for the arranged collection. If the couch is still usable, consider donating it first, since the city encourages reuse before disposal.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

No Sunnyvale page read in this run names a mattress, so bedding has to be confirmed against the on-call bulky collection before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The on-call curbside collection is published as furniture, electronics and other bulky items with no item list, and no mattress rule or rate appears, so confirm the item with the city when the collection is requested.
When & how
Ask about the mattress when requesting the on-call collection through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool, and use one of the two free collections a year if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of every cart and dry until the collection day. Self-hauling is the fallback only if the SMaRT Station confirms it takes the piece, because mattresses are not on the station's partial accepted list.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

The SMaRT Station lists household appliances among the materials it accepts for a fee, and the on-call collection takes bulky items such as appliances on request, so a washer or dryer has two possible routes.

City cost & eligibility
The SMaRT Station charges by material type per cubic yard or per large item and the rate table was not read here, and the on-call collection does not name appliances explicitly, so confirm which route and what charge applies.
When & how
Request the on-call collection through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool, or take the unit to the SMaRT Station at 301 Carl Road, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, with proof of residency and a covered load.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and remove or secure the doors. Keep appliances out of the carts, and confirm the route for anything that holds refrigerant before the unit leaves the property.

Electronics and televisions

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are named among the bulky items the on-call curbside collection takes, and electronic waste is also handled as household hazardous waste at Santa Clara County's weekly drop-off events.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The on-call collection is free twice a year, and household hazardous waste disposal at the county weekly events is provided to residents at no extra charge with an appointment.
When & how
Request the on-call collection through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool, or book a county drop-off on a Friday or Saturday excluding holidays by appointment online or on 408-299-7300.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the device leaves the house, keep electronics out of the garbage, recycling and organics carts because hazardous waste cannot legally go in the garbage, and note that businesses book county drop-off separately on 800-207-8222.

Construction and demolition material

Special rules apply

The SMaRT Station accepts construction and demolition debris as a self-haul material, permitted projects must divert 65 percent of non-hazardous material, and containers come from the city or its franchise hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The SMaRT Station sets rates by material type per cubic yard or per large item and the rate table was not read here, and a permitted project that misses the 65 percent diversion rate pays a penalty calculated from square footage and the shortfall. Confirm the container, the gate rate and the diversion plan before the work starts.
When & how
Order a container from the city Utilities Division on 408-730-7400, or from Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling when the site has no active city water or sewer account, and submit the Green Halo waste management plan before permit approval.
Get it ready
Source-separate material by type where practical, since the city encourages separate bins for concrete, wood and similar streams, and keep treated wood, liquids and hazardous waste out of the load. Track weight tickets for the diversion report, and note that self-hauling and third-party hauling carry their own Municipal Code conditions.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on any Sunnyvale page read in this run, although the on-call collection takes other bulky items, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
No published list or rate names an exercise machine. A machine treated as a bulky item would use one of the two free on-call collections a year, so confirm the item with the city when the collection is requested.
When & how
Request the on-call collection through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool and ask about the machine at the same time.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when you ask, remove the console or battery pack so the electronics are handled on the electronics route, and keep the frame out of the carts until the collection is confirmed.

Bulky items are requested, not left out

Sunnyvale takes furniture, electronics and other bulky items on an on-call curbside collection, and a household may schedule two of them a year at no additional charge. The request runs through the How to Get Rid of Anything tool, where you select Bulky Item Collection, and the same tool shows the collection schedule, holiday notices and recycling events.

Extra garbage uses a tag, and extra dumping weekends are free

A single-family resident with garbage that will not fit the cart buys a six dollar tag and puts one extra bag out per tag on the collection day. The bag must be 35 gallons or smaller and under 30 pounds, the tag goes on the front facing the street, and garbage in cardboard boxes is not collected. Separately, all Sunnyvale residents may take garbage, concrete, demolition material, tires and other non-hazardous loads to the SMaRT Station free during the spring and fall Extra Dumping Weekends.

Hazardous waste drops off by appointment

Household hazardous waste cannot legally go in the garbage. Santa Clara County runs weekly drop-off events on Fridays and Saturdays excluding holidays, disposal is free to residents, and every visit needs an appointment booked online or on 408-299-7300, with businesses booking separately on 800-207-8222. Oil-based paints, solvents, batteries, pool chemicals, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, medicines and sharps are all on the hazardous list.
