Boulder has no citywide bulky item pickup. An oversized household item goes to the hard-to-recycle site, to a reuse donation, or onto a large item collection arranged with the hauler on the account for a fee the hauler sets.
City cost & eligibility
There is no municipal bulky program and no published municipal rate. The Eco-Cycle hard-to-recycle site publishes per item charges for the materials it takes, and a hauler's own large item collection is priced by that hauler, so ask the hauler and the facility before anything is set out.
When & how
Ask the hauler how it handles a large item and when it would collect, or plan a trip to the hard-to-recycle site or the reuse center during their open hours.
Get it ready
Keep the item on the property until a collection is arranged, and check the material rules first: the hard-to-recycle site refuses pressurized vessels such as propane and helium tanks, requires gas powered equipment to be drained of oil and gas, and refuses bedding that is moldy or has bed bugs. Usable furniture and appliances are better donated for reuse than sent for recycling.
A mattress or box spring goes to the hard-to-recycle site for a published per unit charge, and a mattress can also be dropped at a county transfer station or with a mattress collection service.
City cost & eligibility
From $30 for one mattress or box spring at the hard-to-recycle site. A foam mattress topper is charged 10.00, a box spring with two or more pieces is charged proportionally as multiple units, and bedding that is moldy or has bed bugs is refused. The Nederland Transfer Station takes mattresses and box springs at no charge for county residents, the county directory lists Western Disposal as accepting mattresses and box springs at its transfer station without publishing a fee, and a mattress pickup service is listed for a charge.

Take the set to 6400 Arapahoe Rd. Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or to a county transfer station during its open hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and free of mold and pests, because the hard-to-recycle site refuses bedding with either. Ask the retailer delivering a new mattress whether it takes the old one away, which is the cheapest first call.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

A household with a mattress, an appliance, electronics, scrap metal, concrete, ceramics, a toilet or sink, film plastics, books, clothing or bicycle tires to divert.
Cost & conditions
From $3 for the facility fee charged for each vehicle entering the site. The facility fee is charged once per vehicle and is waived for customers arriving by bicycle. Item charges apply on top of it: 45.00 for a refrigerant appliance, 30.00 for a mattress or box spring, 10.00 for a mattress topper, with screens and miscellaneous electronics charged by weight, concrete and ceramics at 0.10 per pound, and a toilet, sink or urinal at 5.00 without fixtures or 25.00 with them. Computers, phones, scrap metal that is at least half metal and free of refrigerant, books, clothing, cardboard, film plastics and glassware are covered by the facility fee.
Arrange it
Drive to 6400 Arapahoe Rd. Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. No appointment is needed: stop at the window, tell the register team what you brought, pay the fees and follow the blue signs through the zones.
The site is closed Sunday, refuses automotive tires, propane, helium and other pressurized tanks even when empty, moldy or bed bug infested bedding, items with food or liquid residue, biohazards and loose glass components, and requires gas powered equipment to arrive drained of oil and gas. Ask the hauler on the account for a large item collection
A household with an oversized item that no drop off route will take, such as a worn out couch, an exercise machine or another bulky piece.
Cost & conditions
The city states that it does not determine or control hauler rates, so the large item charge comes from the hauler on the account. Ask for the price and the item rules before booking a collection.
Arrange it
Call the hauler on the account and ask how it handles a large item, then set the piece out only for the date the hauler gives you.
Not every hauler offers the same large item service, and the city does not run a municipal pickup of its own. Anything usable should go to the reuse center first, and a mattress, appliance or electronic device has a cheaper documented drop off route at the hard-to-recycle site.

Will you carry my mattress downstairs or out of my apartment?+
Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange to move the mattress out of your apartment and down interior stairs before pickup. We load it and take it away from an accessible outdoor spot. Check your building’s access rules before arranging the move outside.
Can you pick up my old mattress when my new one arrives?+
You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed. What does my apartment building have to provide?+
The Universal Zero Waste Ordinance requires property owners to provide adequate compost, recycling and trash collection to tenants, and the city offers multi-family complexes free signs, installation and education programs.
