Appliances have three county-named routes: retailer take-back when a new unit is bought, local vendors that accept working appliances for reuse, and scrap metal recyclers. Refrigerant has to come out first.
City cost & eligibility
The county publishes no rate because each route prices its own service: a retailer may take the old unit at delivery, a reuse vendor may take a working appliance, and a scrap yard prices by metal. Confirm the charge, and any refrigerant handling, with the business before the unit leaves the house.
When & how
Ask the retailer about take-back when ordering a replacement, call a reuse vendor such as Arc Thrift, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Reliable Appliance, or take the unit to a scrap metal recycler from the county list.
Get it ready
Have the refrigerant removed from a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner by a certified CFC technician before the unit is recycled, as the county requires. Empty the appliance, and keep it out of a bulky pile if the item is going to a reuse vendor that only takes working units.
The county does not collect, so a licensed hauler does
Adams County states that it does not provide trash and recycling services for residents and that a household contacts any licensed solid waste hauler to set up service. Solid waste haulers operating in unincorporated Adams County have to be licensed and follow county regulations, and the county publishes the list of licensed companies, including haulers that handle compost, construction and demolition debris and aggregates and electronics recycling. Regular carts, bulky removal and renovation boxes all come from that list.
Mattresses, appliances and electronics have their own routes
The county's material directory sends mattresses and box springs to Spring Back Colorado and the SustainAbility Zero Waste Center in Arvada; tells households buying a new appliance to ask the retailer about take-back, with reuse vendors and scrap metal recyclers for the rest, and requires refrigerant to be removed from a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner by a certified CFC technician before recycling; and runs an electronics drop-off at Pedal Point Solutions in Aurora that needs registration and charges by the vehicle. Paint goes back through the PaintCare network and batteries and lighting through Batteries Plus.
The hazardous waste voucher has an eligibility catch
The county's household hazardous waste voucher covers the facility fee at the Veolia recycling center in Henderson, with the household still paying the per pound charge, and every drop-off is by appointment during the published hours. The eligibility published with the program is residents of unincorporated Adams County, Bennett and Northglenn, and Thornton and Commerce City residents are told to email their own cities instead, so a Derby household should confirm eligibility with the county before booking.
