The permit and the scale come before everything else
Every vehicle, residential or commercial, needs a Holly Hill disposal permit displayed to enter, and the permit costs 25 dollars for the year running July 1 to June 30. Buy it online or at the DPW counter in Town Hall on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. by credit card or check, because cash is not accepted. Only waste generated in Greenwich is allowed, and a company hauling on your behalf needs a signed verification of owner form for each load.
What costs nothing, what costs by weight and what costs per item
Single-stream recyclables, electronics, fluorescent bulbs, batteries including auto and rechargeable types, waste motor oil and antifreeze and empty LPG tanks are free. Construction and demolition debris, yard waste and logs and scrap metal are 4.75 dollars per 100 pounds or portion thereof, with resident cars paying nothing for those three categories. A freon-containing item such as a refrigerator or air conditioner is 16 dollars each, tires are 2 dollars off rim or 4 dollars on rim, and certified weights cost 3 dollars. Non-passenger vehicles such as trucks, pickups, vans and vehicles with trailers are weighed.

Household hazardous waste day is free for Greenwich residents and does not accept commercial loads. The 2026 Greenwich event is on May 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Island Beach Parking Lot on Arch Street, and Greenwich residents may also attend the partner events in Westport, Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan on the published dates. Pack materials in boxes lined with newspaper or kitty litter, keep each container at five gallons or less, and leave asbestos, gas cylinders, explosives, radioactive material, PCBs, infectious waste and unknowns at home.
