No charge. A single family home gets a one-time annual free non-burnable collection of up to five items. A two to six family building gets one free service for all units on the appointment date with up to five items per unit, so a two family building may put out up to ten items and a six family building up to thirty. Extra collections cost 50 dollars for up to five items.

Get it ready
Check the published list before setting anything out. Freon appliances are limited to residential sizes, lawnmowers and snowblowers have to have their fluids removed, tanks have to be dry and cut in half, drums need the tops removed, punctured and dry, and limited amounts of building debris, bricks, rocks, cement and tar products, sheetrock, shingles, siding and tar paper have to be packaged or in 32 gallon barrels half full.
Appliances without Freon are free at the City Recycling Center, and Freon appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are on the on-call non-burnable collection list.

No charge. The Disposal and Recycling Guide lists appliances that do not contain Freon as free to dispose of at the Recycling Center or through an on-call collection. A refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioner with Freon is eligible on the on-call non-burnable collection list, limited to non-commercial sizes.

Get it ready
Confirm whether the unit holds refrigerant before choosing the route, because Freon appliances are handled through the non-burnable list and are limited to non-commercial sizes. Remove fluids from a lawnmower or snowblower, and keep the appliance out of the maroon trash container.
Burnable material covers upholstered and wooden items such as couches, chairs, recliners, rugs and bundled wood, and it is booked by appointment with three free collections of up to five items a year for a single family home. Non-burnable material covers appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, bathtubs and toilets, with one free collection of up to five items a year. Getting the pile into the wrong program is the most common way a collection is refused.
The Recycling Center charges by weight, so sort first
Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free at the City Recycling Center, while general waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged by weight with minimum transaction fees. Separating the free material from the general waste before the trip is what keeps a load cheap.

Drive to 642 Christian Lane, Berlin, CT 06037, open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., on the second and fourth Saturdays from April through October, and every Saturday in November from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
The Center is outside the city in Berlin, the Saturday schedule changes by season and by month, and the free items are the ones the City lists, so a load that mixes free material with general waste is charged on the general waste rate.
Free of charge for mattresses, electronics, metal waste, and the items the City's guide lists as free: appliances without Freon, metal recreational equipment such as swingsets, exercise equipment and grills without tanks, metal bed frames, metal doors, metal furniture, metal lawn furniture, metal shelves and closets, microwaves, yard equipment such as lawnmowers, clippers and spreaders, oil tanks dry and cut in half, hot water heaters and radiators. Propane cylinders, batteries, tires and motor oil are also taken, with the fees listed in the guide, and general waste such as household trash and construction debris is accepted at the ton rate.
General waste is charged at 160 dollars a ton with minimum transactions of 10 dollars up to 100 pounds and 20 dollars from 101 to 240 pounds. Propane is charged per cylinder, batteries per drop off, and tires per tire with no large equipment tires. Oil tanks have to be dry and cut in half. The Center sits in Berlin rather than in New Britain, the Saturday schedule follows the published seasonal openings, and the City publishes the holiday closings for each fiscal year.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

Where does a sleeper sofa go?+
The non-burnable list accepts a sleeper sofa only on its metal bedframe, while the burnable list covers couches, chairs and recliners. What can go in the blue recycling container?+
The blue container is a single stream program, so paper, newspaper, cardboard, box board, plastics numbered 1 through 7, glass and aseptic cartons can be mixed in it, and the City asks residents to keep non recyclable material out because contamination costs the City money. How do leaves go out?+
In paper leaf bags only, on the citywide collection routes, with no plastic bags, no tape or staples, and no more than 40 pounds per bag. Bags are for leaves only, so sticks, pine needles, acorns, brush and rubbish go in the regular trash and grass is composted in the backyard or left on the lawn.
