The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

New Britain runs its own refuse and recycling service, which puts it in a minority of Connecticut cities. A home has a maroon trash container emptied every week and a blue recycling container every other week on the same day, and the City sets the container rules by ordinance, down to the noon start for setting them out and the three feet needed between them. What makes New Britain unusual is that large item collection is part of the service rather than a private arrangement. The City splits it in two: an on-call burnable collection for couches, chairs, wooden furniture, rugs and bundled wood, and an on-call non-burnable collection for appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, toilets and bathtubs. A single family home gets three burnable collections of up to five items and one non-burnable collection of up to five items each fiscal year, all booked through the City's contractor, and extra collections are available for published prices. Anything those programs will not take can go to the City Recycling Center on Christian Lane, where mattresses, electronics and metal are free and general waste is charged by weight.

Weekly maroon trash and bi-weekly blue recycling

Accepted with preparation

New Britain collects trash every week from the City standard maroon container and single stream recycling every other week from the blue container, both on the same collection day for the area.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City provides the collection itself as part of its refuse and recycling service, with one trash and one recycling container allowed per unit up to six family dwellings. A repair after the first free one is charged at 30 dollars, a replacement cart is 75 dollars regardless of the reason, and an eligible property may rent an additional refuse container at 60 dollars a year plus tax.
When & how
Collection runs Monday through Friday on the area's designated day, with recycling every other week split into A and B routes that residents look up on the collection day map. By ordinance containers may not go to the curb earlier than noon on the day before collection and have to be brought in within 24 hours after it. During a holiday week collection is suspended on the holiday and delayed one day for the rest of the week.
Get it ready
Use only the City standard containers, keep them at the curb line of the property the material came from rather than along a neighbor's frontage, and leave at least three feet between containers so the automated arm can reach them. Clear snow at the curb line in winter. Keep recyclables loose in the blue container so the single stream load is not contaminated.

On-call burnable collection

Accepted with preparation

New Britain collects upholstered and wooden furniture, rugs and bundled wood through an on-call burnable collection, with three free collections of up to five items a year for a single family home.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A single family home gets three on-call burnable collections of up to five items each fiscal year, which runs July 1 to June 30. Multi-family properties up to six family get two collections per dwelling unit with a maximum of eight, for example four collections a year and ten items per collection for a two family building. Extra collections cost 20 dollars for the first item and 10 dollars for each additional item.
When & how
Call the City's contractor at 860-793-6721 or book online to set the appointment, and coordinate with the other units in a multi-family building so no more than five items per unit go out on the appointment date.
Get it ready
Set out only eligible material: rugs and carpeting, couches, chairs and recliners, plastic furniture, toys and wooden furniture, with wood no longer than four feet and tied, bundled and taped. Loose wood, yard clippings and fencing carry special instructions, so ask Public Works at 860-826-3350 before adding them to a pile.

On-call non-burnable collection

Accepted with preparation

Appliances, metal furniture, bathtubs, toilets and other hard material go out through the on-call non-burnable collection, with one free collection of up to five items a year for a single family home.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A single family home gets a one-time annual free non-burnable collection of up to five items. A two to six family building gets one free service for all units on the appointment date with up to five items per unit, so a two family building may put out up to ten items and a six family building up to thirty. Extra collections cost 50 dollars for up to five items.
When & how
Call the City's contractor at 860-793-6721 or book online, and coordinate the units in a multi-family building so everything goes out on the same appointment date.
Get it ready
Check the published list before setting anything out. Freon appliances are limited to residential sizes, lawnmowers and snowblowers have to have their fluids removed, tanks have to be dry and cut in half, drums need the tops removed, punctured and dry, and limited amounts of building debris, bricks, rocks, cement and tar products, sheetrock, shingles, siding and tar paper have to be packaged or in 32 gallon barrels half full.

The Recycling Center charges 160 dollars a ton, which its page equates to eight cents a pound, with minimum transaction fees of 10 dollars up to 100 pounds and 20 dollars from 101 to 240 pounds. Limited packaged amounts of building debris, bricks, rocks, cement and tar products, sheetrock, shingles, siding and tar paper can also go out on the on-call non-burnable collection at no charge within the five item allowance.
When & how
Book the on-call non-burnable collection at 860-793-6721 for small packaged amounts, or deliver the load to 642 Christian Lane during the Recycling Center's open hours for material beyond the curbside allowance.

New Britain splits large item collection in two

Burnable material covers upholstered and wooden items such as couches, chairs, recliners, rugs and bundled wood, and it is booked by appointment with three free collections of up to five items a year for a single family home. Non-burnable material covers appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, bathtubs and toilets, with one free collection of up to five items a year. Getting the pile into the wrong program is the most common way a collection is refused.

Set the containers out by the ordinance

Containers may not go to the curb earlier than noon on the day before the collection day and have to be brought in within 24 hours after it. They go at the curb line of the property the material came from, not along a neighbor's frontage, with at least three feet between them so the automated arm can reach. In winter the curb line may need to be cleared of snow.

The Recycling Center charges by weight, so sort first

Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free at the City Recycling Center, while general waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged by weight with minimum transaction fees. Separating the free material from the general waste before the trip is what keeps a load cheap.
