No charge. Mattresses and box springs are dropped free of additional charge at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center at 25 Brixton Street by a resident holding an annual permit, and the piece must not be wet. City collection A refrigerator, a freezer and an air conditioner are all named on the town's accepted appliance list for curbside bulky collection, and the town states that any appliance collected at the curb that holds CFCs is evacuated before it is recycled. The refrigerant appliance is not accepted at the Recycling Center, where humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners are refused, so the curbside permit is the town route.

The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

West Hartford collects refuse and recycling from residential properties with three dwelling units or fewer through All American Waste, with refuse weekly and recycling every other week. Large items need a permit: a bulky waste permit covers up to three cubic yards of furniture, a metal permit covers metal, and an appliance, mattress or box spring each needs its own separate permit, bought online or by phone and then scheduled with the hauler. The town also runs a Yard Waste and Recycling Center at 25 Brixton Street where a permitted resident can drop mattresses, electronics, paint, textiles and scrap metal at no additional charge, and household hazardous waste goes to the regional MDC collection days, two of which are held in West Hartford each year.

Weekly refuse and biweekly recycling

Accepted with preparation

West Hartford collects refuse weekly and recycling every other week from eligible properties, which are non-commercial residential properties with three dwelling units or fewer. Refuse goes in the green barrel and recycling in the blue container.

City cost & eligibility
Curbside service is provided under the town contract with All American Waste at 860-289-7850 and no per household rate is published on the collection pages. A second refuse barrel is available from the hauler with an annual lease and disposal fee on a lease year that runs from October 1 to September 30, so confirm the account charges with the hauler.
When & how
Barrels go out before 6 a.m. on the collection day and may not be placed at the curb more than 24 hours in advance. They come back in within 24 hours after 6 a.m. on the collection day, and recycling is on the alternating week.
Get it ready
Keep the lid facing the street, put everything inside the barrel, keep barrels at least two feet apart, and never place a barrel in the street. Keep explosives, car parts, animal remains and biological, hazardous, liquid or radioactive waste out of the barrel, and keep leaves, grass clippings, brush and branches out as well, since those follow the yard waste program or the recycling center.

Curbside bulky waste permit

Accepted with preparation

Curbside bulky waste collection is a permit program. A permit is bought online or through All American Waste at 860-289-7850 by credit or debit card, used once within two weeks, and the collection is then scheduled with the same hauler.

City cost & eligibility
The town publishes no bulky permit price on the bulky waste page, so confirm the current permit fee with All American Waste at 860-289-7850. Payment is by credit or debit card only, since the program does not accept cash or checks.
When & how
Bulky permits have to be bought and scheduled no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and metal permits no later than 2 p.m. before the normal trash day. Material may not be at the curb more than 24 hours before the scheduled collection and has to be out by 6 a.m. on the day.
Get it ready
One permit covers up to three cubic yards of bulk waste, which the town describes as about a standard pickup load, and a larger pile needs another permit. On one collection day a household may hold one bulky permit, one metal permit and up to three appliance permits, or two bulky permits with up to three appliance permits, or two metal permits with up to three appliance permits. Cancel with the hauler before 4 p.m. on the business day before the collection, because no refund is issued without a confirmed cancellation, and no refund is issued when the items at the curb do not match what was described when the permit was bought.

Couches and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Couches, sofas, loveseats, sectionals, recliners, tables, dressers and other household furniture are on the town's acceptable list for curbside bulky waste collection, which runs on the permit system.

City cost & eligibility
Furniture is collected inside the three cubic yard allowance that one bulky permit covers, and the permit price is not published, so confirm the fee with All American Waste at 860-289-7850 before scheduling.
When & how
Buy the bulky permit, schedule the collection with the hauler no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and have the furniture at the curb no more than 24 hours early and by 6 a.m. on the day.
Get it ready
Keep the load inside the three cubic yard allowance and keep it out of the street. Break up and tie pallets, bundle wood lumber to four or five foot lengths, and keep refused material such as construction debris, brick, concrete, tires, electronics and bagged trash out of the pile.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

Connecticut has required mattress recycling since 2015, and West Hartford gives a household three routes: drop the mattress or box spring at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center with a permit, buy a separate bulky permit for each piece for curbside collection, or use a state drop-off location.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Mattresses and box springs are dropped free of additional charge at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center at 25 Brixton Street by a resident holding an annual permit, and the piece must not be wet. A curbside collection instead requires the purchase of a separate bulky permit for each individual mattress or box spring.
When & how
Take the piece to the Recycling Center during its open hours, or buy the permit and schedule a curbside collection with All American Waste no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day. Keep a mattress out of the rain before the trip.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring dry, because the center will not take a wet one, and keep them out of the refuse and recycling barrels. A curbside collection counts the mattress and the box spring as two separate permits.

Washers, dryers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

The town lists accepted appliances that include air conditioners, cook tops, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, washers and dryers, freezers, hot water heaters, microwaves, ovens, stoves, refrigerators and trash compactors, each needing its own curbside permit.

City cost & eligibility
Every appliance requires the purchase of a separate permit, and the permit price is not published on the bulky waste page, so confirm the per appliance fee with All American Waste at 860-289-7850. No more than three appliances can be collected at one address in a given week.
When & how
Buy one permit per appliance, then schedule the collection with the hauler no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and have the units at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day and no more than 24 hours early.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors, keep appliances out of the refuse and recycling barrels, and note that no more than three appliances may be collected at one address in a single week. Metal and white goods collected at the curb are recycled, and any unit holding CFCs is evacuated before recycling.

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners

Accepted with preparation

A refrigerator, a freezer and an air conditioner are all named on the town's accepted appliance list for curbside bulky collection, and the town states that any appliance collected at the curb that holds CFCs is evacuated before it is recycled.

City cost & eligibility
A refrigerant unit needs its own bulky permit, and the permit price is not published, so confirm the per appliance fee with All American Waste at 860-289-7850. The refrigerant appliance is not accepted at the Recycling Center, where humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners are refused, so the curbside permit is the town route.
When & how
Buy the appliance permit, schedule the collection with the hauler no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and put the unit at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, secure the doors, and leave the refrigerant work to the hauler, which evacuates CFCs before recycling. Do not take a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner to the Recycling Center, because refrigerant units are refused there and the center takes only electronics without Freon.

Computers and small electronics

Accepted with preparation

The Yard Waste and Recycling Center takes computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, personal digital assistants, copiers, microwaves, telephones and anything with a plug and no Freon, as a free material for a permitted resident. Electronics are refused in the curbside bulky program.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronic recycling is on the center's list of material available to residents free of charge, and an annual permit holder has unlimited access with no additional fee for it. The center does require an annual or day permit to enter, and permits are sold at published rates.
When & how
Take the devices to the Yard Waste and Recycling Center at 25 Brixton Street, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the last vehicle at 2:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon with the last vehicle at 11:45 a.m., closed on the listed holidays.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the drop-off, keep electronics out of the refuse and recycling barrels, and keep them off a curbside bulky pile because electronics are refused in that program. Note that smoke detectors, hazardous materials and liquids, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners are not accepted with the electronics.

Televisions

Accepted with preparation

A television is named on the Recycling Center's free electronic waste list, and electronics are refused in the curbside bulky program, so the center is the town route for a screen.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Electronic recycling, including televisions, is available to residents free of charge with an annual permit at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center. The permit itself is required to enter and is sold at published rates.
When & how
Take the set to 25 Brixton Street during the center's open hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon, and arrive before the last vehicle times.
Get it ready
Keep the television out of the barrels and off a curbside bulky pile, protect the screen for transport, and remove cables and stands. Do not bring a dehumidifier or an air conditioner with it, because those refrigerant items are refused at the center.
Yard waste and recycling center permits, fees and free materialsBulky waste permit: acceptable items, limits and scheduling

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

Construction debris is on the refused list for curbside bulky collection, and the town FAQ sends the question to the bulky page. The only published town route for a project material is clean fill and concrete rubble, which the Recycling Center accepts with a half cubic yard maximum drop-off.

City cost & eligibility
Clean fill and concrete rubble up to half a cubic yard are accepted free of additional charge at the Recycling Center for a permitted resident, and everything else from a project is refused at the curb. No other town disposal route or rate is published, so confirm the rest of the load with Public Works at 860-561-8100 or a private hauler.
When & how
Take clean fill and concrete rubble to 25 Brixton Street during the center's open hours, and keep construction material out of the bulky pile and out of the barrels.
Get it ready
Separate clean fill and concrete rubble from mixed construction debris, keep the clean material within the half cubic yard drop-off limit, and keep brick, concrete, sheetrock, plaster, stone, ceiling tiles, insulation, vinyl siding and construction debris out of the curbside bulky pile, because all of them are refused there.
Yard waste and recycling center permits, fees and free materialsBulky waste permit: acceptable items, limits and schedulingPublic works FAQs: eligibility, disposal destinations and barrels

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the acceptable bulky list, the appliance list or the Recycling Center materials, so a treadmill or a weight machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No published list or rate covers an exercise machine, and the town publishes no bulky permit price, so confirm the piece and the current fee with All American Waste at 860-289-7850 before buying a permit.
When & how
Ask the hauler about the machine first, and if it is accepted buy the bulky permit and schedule the collection no later than 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day.
Get it ready
Take off loose weights, pedals and straps, fold the frame where it allows it, and keep any console or battery separate so nothing with a battery goes into a barrel. Keep the machine out of the street and out of the refuse and recycling barrels while the route is confirmed.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

The town participates in the MDC regional household hazardous waste program, which runs collection days in the spring and fall at sites around the region, and a West Hartford resident may use any MDC collection day. Paint is also accepted free at the Recycling Center in labeled containers.

City cost & eligibility
The town does not publish a household hazardous waste fee, and the MDC page describes the program without a price, so confirm the accepted items and any charge with the MDC hotline at 860-278-3809. Paint in labeled containers is free to drop at the Recycling Center with a permit.
When & how
The 2026 MDC schedule includes West Hartford collections at the Public Works Garage, 17 Brixton Street, on Sunday, May 17 and Saturday, September 26, and most MDC collections run on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A West Hartford resident may attend any MDC collection day.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous products out of the barrels and out of a bulky pile, keep them in their original containers, and bring paint to the Recycling Center only in labeled containers. Check the MDC information packet for the items the program accepts and for alternatives when an item cannot be taken.

For the weekly refuse and recycling barrels

Put the barrels out before 6 a.m. on the collection day and never more than 24 hours early, with the lid facing the street and everything inside the barrel. Leave at least two feet between barrels, keep them out of the street, and bring them back in within 24 hours after 6 a.m. on the collection day. Refuse goes in the green barrel and recycling in the blue container.

Curbside collection and recycling rules

For a permitted bulky collection

Buy the permit first and schedule the collection with All American Waste, because a permit that is not scheduled is not a collection. Bulky permits have to be bought and scheduled by 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and the material may not be at the curb more than 24 hours early or later than 6 a.m. on the collection day. Report the items accurately when the permit is bought, because no refund is issued if the pile does not match the description.

Once inside, mattresses and box springs that are dry, electronics, paint in labeled containers, textiles in bags, scrap metal that is entirely metal, books, brush, clean fill and concrete rubble up to half a cubic yard, leaves and compost are free. The center opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the last vehicle at 2:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon with the last vehicle at 11:45 a.m.
