Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Curbside bulky waste collection is a permit program. A permit is bought online or through All American Waste at 860-289-7850 by credit or debit card, used once within two weeks, and the collection is then scheduled with the same hauler.
Couches, sofas, loveseats, sectionals, recliners, tables, dressers and other household furniture are on the town's acceptable list for curbside bulky waste collection, which runs on the permit system.
Connecticut has required mattress recycling since 2015, and West Hartford gives a household three routes: drop the mattress or box spring at the Yard Waste and Recycling Center with a permit, buy a separate bulky permit for each piece for curbside collection, or use a state drop-off location.
The town lists accepted appliances that include air conditioners, cook tops, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, washers and dryers, freezers, hot water heaters, microwaves, ovens, stoves, refrigerators and trash compactors, each needing its own curbside permit.
The handoff matters
Buy the permit first and schedule the collection with All American Waste, because a permit that is not scheduled is not a collection. Bulky permits have to be bought and scheduled by 2 p.m. on the Tuesday before the Wednesday collection day, and the material may not be at the curb more than 24 hours early or later than 6 a.m. on the collection day. Report the items accurately when the permit is bought, because no refund is issued if the pile does not match the description.

Once inside, mattresses and box springs that are dry, electronics, paint in labeled containers, textiles in bags, scrap metal that is entirely metal, books, brush, clean fill and concrete rubble up to half a cubic yard, leaves and compost are free. The center opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the last vehicle at 2:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon with the last vehicle at 11:45 a.m.
