Match the screen

Flat screen or tube? Start with the shape.

The TV’s type and size determine which item to choose. A new model and an old model can use the same option if their shape and screen size match.

Flat-screen TVs

Measure the screen diagonally, corner to corner, without the frame. Choose under 42 inches or 42 inches and larger. A TV measuring exactly 42 inches belongs to the larger option.

Tube TVs

An older tube or CRT television has curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Choose Tube TV even if its screen is small. A rear-projection TV is different; send a photo before booking so we can check the fit.

TV stands and other electronics

The TV price covers the television. Add a media console, computer monitor or other item separately if it is going too. Choose only what you want removed and review the combined price.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are free to drop at the City Recycling Center on Christian Lane, which the City lists among the items accepted there at no cost.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City states that many items, including mattresses, electronics and metal waste, can be disposed of at the Recycling Center at no cost.
When & how
Take the devices to 642 Christian Lane in Berlin, open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., on the second and fourth Saturdays from April through October, and every Saturday in November from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the blue recycling container, which is part of a single stream program for paper, plastics, cardboard and glass, and out of the maroon trash container. Wipe personal data from a computer or drive before it leaves the property.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

The Recycling Center charges by weight, so sort first

Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free at the City Recycling Center, while general waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged by weight with minimum transaction fees. Separating the free material from the general waste before the trip is what keeps a load cheap.

Drop a load at the City Recycling Center

A household with a mattress, electronics, metal waste or a general waste load that the curbside programs do not take.

Cost & conditions
From $10 for the minimum transaction fee for up to 100 pounds of general waste at the City Recycling Center. Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free there. General waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged at 160 dollars a ton, which the City equates to eight cents a pound, with minimum transactions of 10 dollars up to 100 pounds and 20 dollars from 101 to 240 pounds. Propane cylinders, batteries and tires carry the separate fees listed in the guide.
Arrange it
Drive to 642 Christian Lane, Berlin, CT 06037, open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., on the second and fourth Saturdays from April through October, and every Saturday in November from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The Center is outside the city in Berlin, the Saturday schedule changes by season and by month, and the free items are the ones the City lists, so a load that mixes free material with general waste is charged on the general waste rate.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

New Britain has no landfill of its own, so the self haul route is the City's Residential Recycling Center at 642 Christian Lane in Berlin, about ten minutes out of town. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., on the second and fourth Saturdays from April through October, and every Saturday in November from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the City publishes the fiscal year Saturday openings and holiday closings. Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free there, and the City's guide also lists appliances without Freon, metal recreational equipment such as swingsets, exercise equipment and grills without tanks, metal bed frames, metal doors, metal furniture, microwaves, yard equipment, oil tanks dry and cut in half, water heaters and radiators, and toilets, tubs and sinks as free to dispose of or to put out on an on-call collection. General waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged at 160 dollars a ton with minimum transactions of 10 dollars up to 100 pounds and 20 dollars from 101 to 240 pounds. Propane cylinders are 2 dollars for a one pound cylinder, 15 dollars up to 20 pounds and 20 dollars above, batteries are 5 dollars, and tires are 10 dollars each up to 20 inches, 25 dollars each from 20 to 24 inches and 60 dollars each at 25 inches and above, with no large equipment tires. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

TV removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in New Britain.

How much does TV removal cost in New Britain?

A flat-screen TV under 42 inches is $79 as the first item and $19 as an additional item. Larger flat screens and tube TVs have their own prices. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Choose the type that matches your TV and review your total, including any applicable tax, before payment.

Can I get same-day TV pickup in New Britain?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup. Choose from the dates offered at checkout and have the TV outside according to your confirmation. We text you when your hauler is on the way and provide photos when the pickup is done.

Will Dropcurb remove my TV from the wall or carry it downstairs?

You arrange unmounting, disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Dropcurb starts at an accessible outdoor location, where we load your TV and take it away. If you need help removing a mounted TV or moving a heavy tube TV outside, arrange that separately before your pickup day.

Do you pick up old tube or CRT televisions?

Yes. Choose Tube TV for an older television with curved glass and a deep, heavy body. Its price is $249 as the first item and $249 as an additional item. A rear-projection television is a different item; send a photo before booking rather than choosing the tube-TV option.

Does my old TV have to work?

Your TV does not need to turn on for removal. Choose its type and size and arrange to have it outside before pickup. A non-working TV and a TV with exposed broken glass are different situations; send a photo of unusual damage so we can confirm the plan before you book.

Where do televisions and computers go in New Britain?

To the City Recycling Center at 642 Christian Lane in Berlin, where the City states electronics can be disposed of at no cost. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and on the published Saturdays.Official guidance

Can electronics go in the blue recycling container?

No. The blue container is part of the City's single stream recycling program for paper, plastics, cardboard and glass, and electronics are not part of that stream. The City routes electronics to the Recycling Center or an on-call collection instead.Official guidance

Who collects trash in New Britain?

The City of New Britain Public Works Department runs the service and uses CWPM as its rubbish and recycling contractor. Public Works is at 27 West Main Street on the 5th floor, telephone 860-826-3350, and the contractor's collection appointment line is 860-793-6721.Official guidance

What large item programs does New Britain run?

Two, both booked by appointment. The burnable collection takes couches, chairs, recliners, rugs, carpeting, wooden and plastic furniture, toys and bundled wood, and the non-burnable collection takes appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, bathtubs, toilets and packaged building debris. A single family home gets three burnable collections of up to five items and one non-burnable collection of up to five items each fiscal year.Official guidance

What do the collections and drop-off fees cost?

The annual allowances are free. An extra burnable collection costs 20 dollars for the first item and 10 dollars for each additional item, and an extra non-burnable collection costs 50 dollars for up to five items. At the Recycling Center, mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free, general waste is 160 dollars a ton with minimum transactions, batteries are 5 dollars, propane runs from 2 to 20 dollars and tires run from 10 to 60 dollars each by size.Official guidance

How does a multi-family building book collections?

A two to six family building gets one free non-burnable service for all units on the appointment date with up to five items per unit, so the building total runs from ten items for a two family to thirty for a six family. Burnable collections run at two per dwelling unit with a maximum of eight, and the owner or tenants have to coordinate so no more than five items per unit go out at once.Official guidance

What can go in the blue recycling container?

The blue container is a single stream program, so paper, newspaper, cardboard, box board, plastics numbered 1 through 7, glass and aseptic cartons can be mixed in it, and the City asks residents to keep non recyclable material out because contamination costs the City money. The guide lists co-mingled recycling as free at the Recycling Center as well as at the curb.Official guidance

How do leaves go out?

In paper leaf bags only, on the citywide collection routes, with no plastic bags, no tape or staples, and no more than 40 pounds per bag. Bags are for leaves only, so sticks, pine needles, acorns, brush and rubbish go in the regular trash and grass is composted in the backyard or left on the lawn. The Recycling Center is the drop-off site for overweight bags.Official guidance
