A few pieces, one pickup

Choose each piece

A table and four chairs are five items.

You don’t need to guess how much space your furniture fills in a truck. Match each piece to the catalog, then add its quantity. Your total updates as you go.

Tables and chairs

Choose the table, then add each chair separately. Coffee tables, side tables and dining tables have their own options. A large or substantially heavy table has a different choice.

Dressers and mirrors

Match the dresser’s overall size. Add a separate dresser mirror as its own item if it is leaving too. Empty drawers and keep the belongings you want before moving the dresser outside.

Desks and bookshelves

Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

On-call burnable collection

Accepted with preparation

New Britain collects upholstered and wooden furniture, rugs and bundled wood through an on-call burnable collection, with three free collections of up to five items a year for a single family home.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A single family home gets three on-call burnable collections of up to five items each fiscal year, which runs July 1 to June 30. Multi-family properties up to six family get two collections per dwelling unit with a maximum of eight, for example four collections a year and ten items per collection for a two family building. Extra collections cost 20 dollars for the first item and 10 dollars for each additional item.
When & how
Call the City's contractor at 860-793-6721 or book online to set the appointment, and coordinate with the other units in a multi-family building so no more than five items per unit go out on the appointment date.
Get it ready
Set out only eligible material: rugs and carpeting, couches, chairs and recliners, plastic furniture, toys and wooden furniture, with wood no longer than four feet and tied, bundled and taped. Loose wood, yard clippings and fencing carry special instructions, so ask Public Works at 860-826-3350 before adding them to a pile.

On-call non-burnable collection

Accepted with preparation

Appliances, metal furniture, bathtubs, toilets and other hard material go out through the on-call non-burnable collection, with one free collection of up to five items a year for a single family home.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A single family home gets a one-time annual free non-burnable collection of up to five items. A two to six family building gets one free service for all units on the appointment date with up to five items per unit, so a two family building may put out up to ten items and a six family building up to thirty. Extra collections cost 50 dollars for up to five items.
When & how
Call the City's contractor at 860-793-6721 or book online, and coordinate the units in a multi-family building so everything goes out on the same appointment date.
Get it ready
Check the published list before setting anything out. Freon appliances are limited to residential sizes, lawnmowers and snowblowers have to have their fluids removed, tanks have to be dry and cut in half, drums need the tops removed, punctured and dry, and limited amounts of building debris, bricks, rocks, cement and tar products, sheetrock, shingles, siding and tar paper have to be packaged or in 32 gallon barrels half full.

New Britain splits large item collection in two

Burnable material covers upholstered and wooden items such as couches, chairs, recliners, rugs and bundled wood, and it is booked by appointment with three free collections of up to five items a year for a single family home. Non-burnable material covers appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, bathtubs and toilets, with one free collection of up to five items a year. Getting the pile into the wrong program is the most common way a collection is refused.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

New Britain has no landfill of its own, so the self haul route is the City's Residential Recycling Center at 642 Christian Lane in Berlin, about ten minutes out of town. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., on the second and fourth Saturdays from April through October, and every Saturday in November from 7:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the City publishes the fiscal year Saturday openings and holiday closings. Mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free there, and the City's guide also lists appliances without Freon, metal recreational equipment such as swingsets, exercise equipment and grills without tanks, metal bed frames, metal doors, metal furniture, microwaves, yard equipment, oil tanks dry and cut in half, water heaters and radiators, and toilets, tubs and sinks as free to dispose of or to put out on an on-call collection. General waste such as household trash and construction debris is charged at 160 dollars a ton with minimum transactions of 10 dollars up to 100 pounds and 20 dollars from 101 to 240 pounds. Propane cylinders are 2 dollars for a one pound cylinder, 15 dollars up to 20 pounds and 20 dollars above, batteries are 5 dollars, and tires are 10 dollars each up to 20 inches, 25 dollars each from 20 to 24 inches and 60 dollars each at 25 inches and above, with no large equipment tires. Leaves also come to the Center in the fall and spring leaf programs, and the City lists household hazardous waste collection days as a separate service with dates on its environmental services calendar. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Furniture removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in New Britain.

How much does furniture removal cost in New Britain?

Choose the type and size of each piece to see its price. For example, a medium dresser is $79 as the first item or $29 as an additional item. Your total starts with the highest first-item price in your selection, then uses the additional-item price for every other item. Review the complete total and any applicable tax before payment.

Can I get same-day furniture pickup in New Britain?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup and choose from the dates shown at checkout. Arrange to have the furniture outside according to your confirmation. You receive a text when your hauler is on the way and photos after collection.

Will you remove furniture from inside my apartment?

Dropcurb starts outside. You arrange indoor carrying, including any interior stairs or elevator trip. We load and take away the furniture from an accessible outdoor location. Check your building’s rules and plan the route out before booking.

Can you take several different furniture items in one pickup?

Yes. Add each piece and its quantity to one booking. A dining table and four chairs are five items; a separate mirror is not included with a dresser. You can mix eligible items from different rooms and review their combined total before paying.

Do I need to take furniture apart before pickup?

You arrange any disassembly needed to move the furniture out of your home and into an accessible outdoor pickup spot. Dropcurb does not provide indoor disassembly or carrying. If you are unsure which catalog choice matches a dismantled or unusual piece, send a photo and ask before booking.

What can go out in a burnable collection?

Rugs and carpeting, couches, chairs and recliners, plastic furniture, toys, wooden furniture, and wood no longer than four feet that is tied, bundled and taped. Loose wood, yard clippings and fencing have special instructions, so ask Public Works at 860-826-3350.Official guidance

How many burnable collections does a household get?

A single family home gets three on-call burnable collections of up to five items each fiscal year, which runs July 1 to June 30, and the property owner books the appointment. Extra collections beyond the allowance cost 20 dollars for the first item and 10 dollars for each additional item.Official guidance

What can go out in a non-burnable collection?

Appliances including refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners with Freon, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and microwaves, furnaces and water heaters, bathtubs, sinks, toilets and vanities, metal doors, metal bedframes, metal furniture, bicycles, exercise machines, cement mixers, snowblowers with no fluids, lawnmowers with fluids removed, dismantled swingsets, pipes bundled up to four feet, tanks cut in half, and limited packaged amounts of building debris, bricks, rocks, sheetrock, shingles and siding.Official guidance

How many non-burnable items can go out?

A single family home gets one free collection of up to five items a year. A two to six family building gets one free service for the whole building on the appointment date, with up to five items per unit, so the building total runs from ten items for a two family to thirty for a six family. An extra collection costs 50 dollars for up to five items.Official guidance

Where does a sleeper sofa go?

The non-burnable list accepts a sleeper sofa only on its metal bedframe, while the burnable list covers couches, chairs and recliners. A sleeper sofa is therefore split between the two programs, so ask Public Works at 860-826-3350 how the piece should be presented before the appointment.Official guidance

Who collects trash in New Britain?

The City of New Britain Public Works Department runs the service and uses CWPM as its rubbish and recycling contractor. Public Works is at 27 West Main Street on the 5th floor, telephone 860-826-3350, and the contractor's collection appointment line is 860-793-6721.Official guidance

What large item programs does New Britain run?

Two, both booked by appointment. The burnable collection takes couches, chairs, recliners, rugs, carpeting, wooden and plastic furniture, toys and bundled wood, and the non-burnable collection takes appliances, metal furniture, exercise machines, bathtubs, toilets and packaged building debris. A single family home gets three burnable collections of up to five items and one non-burnable collection of up to five items each fiscal year.Official guidance

What do the collections and drop-off fees cost?

At the Recycling Center, mattresses, electronics and metal waste are free, general waste is 160 dollars a ton with minimum transactions, batteries are 5 dollars, propane runs from 2 to 20 dollars and tires run from 10 to 60 dollars each by size.Official guidance

How does a multi-family building book collections?

A two to six family building gets one free non-burnable service for all units on the appointment date with up to five items per unit, so the building total runs from ten items for a two family to thirty for a six family. Burnable collections run at two per dwelling unit with a maximum of eight, and the owner or tenants have to coordinate so no more than five items per unit go out at once.Official guidance

What can go in the blue recycling container?

The blue container is a single stream program, so paper, newspaper, cardboard, box board, plastics numbered 1 through 7, glass and aseptic cartons can be mixed in it, and the City asks residents to keep non recyclable material out because contamination costs the City money. The guide lists co-mingled recycling as free at the Recycling Center as well as at the curb.Official guidance

How do leaves go out?

In paper leaf bags only, on the citywide collection routes, with no plastic bags, no tape or staples, and no more than 40 pounds per bag. Bags are for leaves only, so sticks, pine needles, acorns, brush and rubbish go in the regular trash and grass is composted in the backyard or left on the lawn. The Recycling Center is the drop-off site for overweight bags.Official guidance
