The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Clearwater runs its own collection rather than contracting it out, and the unusual convenience of the program is that nothing needs an appointment. Trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky items all go out on the same weekly service day, so a sofa, a mattress or a washer is set at the curb with the black barrel instead of being scheduled. The two exceptions both start with a phone call to the operations line: appliances and electronic equipment. What governs the rest is volume and placement. Each single family home gets 40 cubic yards of bulk collection and 40 cubic yards of yard waste a calendar year, the trucks run a scheduled route and will not come back for a pile set out late, and construction material, tires, chemicals and liquid paint are refused at the curb and belong to county programs instead.

Weekly garbage in the black barrel

Accepted with preparation

The City collects garbage once a week for single family homes, with the barrel at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day and back in by the same hour the next morning.

City cost & eligibility
$37.27 for the monthly solid waste component of the minimum Clearwater utility bill as of December 2025, published alongside the separate recycling component inside the same minimum bill. Clearwater utility customers inside the city limits. The minimum bill depends on the location, the meter size and the measured usage, so the amount on an individual bill can differ.
When & how
Once a week for single family residences on the household's collection day, which the City publishes in a collection schedule finder, with a separate schedule for holiday weeks. Multifamily and commercial schedules vary.
Get it ready
Place garbage other than yard waste in the black barrel, close the lid and keep nothing hanging down the sides. Drain liquids and bag loose debris such as paper plates, paper towels, shredded paper and polystyrene. Raw garbage is not collected outside the barrel. Refused in the trash: hot ashes, yard waste, concrete, dirt, sod and sand, plaster and plasterboard, carpet, tile, lumber, bricks, roofing material, construction, remodeling and demolition debris, tires, auto batteries, pool and other chemicals, flammable items and liquid paint.

Bulky items, furniture and couches

Accepted with preparation

Furniture and other large household items go to the curb on the regular collection day with no appointment, and the City treats about four to five furniture sized pieces as an appropriate curbside load.

City cost & eligibility
$37.27 for the monthly solid waste component of the minimum Clearwater utility bill, which the City states covers the weekly trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk collection that all run on the same service day, with no separate bulk fee published. Clearwater utility customers inside the city limits. The City says larger amounts may be subject to additional time charges it does not publish, so confirm a large pile with the operations line before it goes out.
When & how
Once a week on the regular collection day, on the same route as trash, recycling and yard waste. Bulk debris should not go to the curb more than 24 hours before the service day and has to be there by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep the pile clear of overhead wires, trees, poles, mailboxes and vehicles, and keep yard waste and junk separate. Bag or box smaller junk such as dishes, lamps, clothing, magazines and books so it can be handled on the route. Each single family home is allowed up to 40 cubic yards of bulk collection per calendar year, and crews cannot return for a pile that was set out after the route passed. Appliances and electronic equipment need a call ahead.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress or box spring is a large household item, so it rides with the weekly bulk collection on the regular service day instead of being scheduled separately.

City cost & eligibility
$37.27 for the monthly solid waste component of the minimum Clearwater utility bill, which covers the weekly bulk collection the City runs for large household items. Clearwater utility customers inside the city limits. The City names washers, dryers, sofas and furniture as the examples for the program, so confirm a mattress or an adjustable base with the operations line if it needs special handling.
When & how
At the curb by 7 a.m. on the regular collection day, and no more than 24 hours before it.
Get it ready
Wrap or bag the mattress so it stays dry and can be lifted, and keep it clear of overhead wires, trees, poles, mailboxes and vehicles. Bedding counts against the same 40 cubic yards of bulk collection allowed for each single family home each calendar year, so add it to a load rather than setting pieces out one at a time.

Appliances and cooling units

Special rules apply

Washers, dryers and other large appliances are part of the weekly program, but the City asks for a call ahead so the pickup is recorded before the appliance goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no separate appliance fee, so an appliance rides with the same weekly solid waste service the monthly utility bill covers. Because the City asks for the call ahead, confirm the item, the service day and any charge for the trip with the operations line before the appliance goes out.
When & how
Call the operations line at (727) 562-4920 before the regular collection day, then have the appliance at the curb by 7 a.m. on the service day and no more than 24 hours early.
Get it ready
Empty and clean the unit, secure or remove the door, and ask when you call whether a refrigerator, freezer or other cooling unit has to be degassed or tagged for refrigerant recovery first, because the City does not publish that step. The City asks for the call ahead specifically so an appliance or a piece of electronic equipment is not missed on the route.
City page on disposing of large bulky items, with the no appointment weekly pickup and the call ahead note for appliances and electronicsCity residential trash collection page with the weekly schedule, set out rules, refusal list and the yard waste and bulk allowances

Televisions and household electronics

Special rules apply

Small electronics go in the black barrel, an item too big for the barrel needs a special pickup, and anything with a rechargeable battery that cannot be removed goes to a county drop-off instead.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for the special pickup it sends when an electronic item will not fit in the barrel, so confirm the trip and any charge with the operations line. Electronics that fit ride with the regular garbage the monthly utility bill already covers.
When & how
Electronics that fit go in the black barrel on the regular collection day. A special pickup for an oversized item is arranged through the operations line at (727) 562-4920.
Get it ready
Put household electronics in the black barrel trash can and not on the ground, and use the shared dumpster at an apartment or condominium complex. Remove a rechargeable battery where it comes out and put the rest of the device in the trash. Where the battery cannot be removed, take the item to a drop-off found through the county Where Does It Go? search tool, and never put a device with a rechargeable battery in the garbage or recycling because it can cause a fire when it is compressed in a collection truck. Working electronics can also be donated or taken to a take-back program.

Construction, remodeling and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

The City refuses construction, remodeling and demolition material at the curb in every collection, so the route is the county disposal complex or a permitted private hauler.

City cost & eligibility
Clearwater does not collect this material at the curb. The City refuses concrete, dirt, sod and sand, plaster and plasterboard, carpet, tile, lumber, bricks, roofing material and construction, remodeling and demolition debris in the trash, and refuses lumber, metal and construction or building material in the yard waste and bulk collections. Take the material to the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Complex at 3095 114th Avenue North in St. Petersburg, or hire a permitted private hauler or roll-off company through the City permit program.
When & how
The county disposal complex scale house runs Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed Sundays. A load that needs special handling, such as asbestos, sludge, soil, treated lumber, deceased animals, a boat or industrial process waste, takes an appointment at (727) 464-7500.
Get it ready
Separate clean material before it leaves the property, because a load carrying five or more waste tires is weighed at a different rate and any tire over 36 inches has to be cut into quarters. Keep vehicles, biological and infectious waste, explosives, gasoline and fuel oil, hazardous waste, liquid waste and radioactive waste out of the load, because the complex rejects them. Hazardous waste and gasoline from residents go to the household hazardous waste program instead.
City residential trash collection page with the weekly schedule, set out rules, refusal list and the yard waste and bulk allowancesPinellas County disposal complex fee page with the per ton, flat, tire and special handling fees and the prohibited items list

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise machines are not on the City's named example list, so the pickup has to be confirmed with the solid waste line before the equipment goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no separate rate for a large item and does not name exercise equipment, so confirm the item, the service day and any charge with the operations line. A machine usually falls inside the same weekly bulk service the monthly utility bill covers, but the City decides whether a particular piece is too large for the route.
When & how
Confirm with the operations line at (727) 562-4920 first, then have the equipment at the curb by 7 a.m. on the regular collection day and no more than 24 hours early.
Get it ready
Weigh the piece before you promise it to the curb, because a machine such as a treadmill, an elliptical or a home gym counts against the 40 cubic yards of bulk collection allowed for each single family home each calendar year. Take off loose weights, break down what comes apart, and keep the pile clear of overhead wires, trees, poles, mailboxes and vehicles.
City residential trash collection page with the weekly schedule, set out rules, refusal list and the yard waste and bulk allowancesCity page on disposing of large bulky items, with the no appointment weekly pickup and the call ahead note for appliances and electronics

Yard waste and landscaping debris

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected once a week on the regular collection day, with 40 cubic yards a calendar year for each single family home and multi-family unit.

City cost & eligibility
$37.27 for the monthly solid waste component of the minimum Clearwater utility bill, which covers the weekly yard waste collection that runs on the same service day as trash and recycling. Clearwater utility customers inside the city limits. The City publishes no separate yard waste fee and caps the material at 40 cubic yards per calendar year for each single family home and multi-family unit, with a very bulky pile arranged by phone.
When & how
Once a week on the regular collection day, at the curb by 7 a.m. and no more than 24 hours before the service day.
Get it ready
Box or bag leaves and grass clippings under 50 pounds, cut tree limbs and brush into 4-foot lengths and bundle them, and cut limbs and stumps over four inches in diameter into lengths of 4 feet or less and stack them curbside clear of obstructions. Bag uncontaminated twigs and loose leaves, or use a garbage can of up to 32 gallons. The City picks up only material the property owner cut and gathered, because debris left by a tree service or landscaper has to be removed by that company, and a tree the resident removed without a city permit needs an arborist letter under Florida Statute 163.045. Refused here: dirt, rocks and sod, plaster, flammable liquids, explosives, toxic and biohazardous material, motor oil, lumber, metal, construction or building material, pesticides and herbicides, hazardous material, paint and electronics.

Paint, chemicals and hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous material never goes in the trash, the bulk pile or the recycling bin, and Pinellas County collects household chemicals free at two permanent sites, one of them in Clearwater.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Pinellas County households, free for the chemicals on the county list, with limits applied per vehicle per day and a government issued identification scanned to verify residency. Businesses, hobbyists, haulers and nonprofits are referred to the county business collection events instead.
When & how
The north county site in Clearwater takes select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during construction of the new North County Service Center, on the dates posted on the county calendar. The main household hazardous waste center in St. Petersburg takes Tuesday through Friday and the first and third Saturday of the month from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Package chemicals in a box or tray with crumpled newspaper, put a leaking container in a clear sealed bag and then a box, and carry the material in the trunk or truck bed away from passengers rather than mixing chemicals together. Accepted at the county sites: automotive oils and antifreeze, gasoline and diesel in approved containers with no tanks, cleaners and aerosols, lawn and garden chemicals, mercury devices and fluorescent bulbs, paints, stains and solvents, pool and spa products, marine and road flares, and rechargeable and single use batteries and vape devices. Not accepted: electronics, appliances, fire extinguishers, propane tanks over one pound, other compressed gas tanks, medicine and sharps, and vehicle batteries.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Put the barrel out the night before

The container goes to the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before the collection day and no later than 7 a.m. on the day itself, and it comes back in no later than 7 a.m. the following day. Place it within 2 feet of the curb with the handle facing away, and keep it 3 feet from the recycling bin and from obstructions such as mailboxes, parked cars, trees and wires, because an automated vehicle services all City issued barrels. The truck runs a scheduled route and cannot return for a barrel that was set out late.

Bulk and yard waste follow the same weekly day

Bulk items and yard waste are collected once a week on the regular service day, should not go to the curb more than 24 hours before it, and have to be there by 7 a.m. Keep both piles clear of overhead wires, trees, poles, mailboxes and vehicles, and keep yard waste and junk separate from each other. Bag or box smaller junk such as dishes, lamps, clothing, magazines and books so the crew can handle it.

Call before an appliance or electronics pickup

The City asks residents to call ahead when an appliance or electronic equipment needs to be picked up, so the crew knows the item is coming and it is not missed on the scheduled route. The operations line is (727) 562-4920, and it also handles a missed pickup or a question about whether a particular item belongs in the bulk pile.

City of Clearwater Solid Waste and Recycling Department

Special pickup for a large appliance or electronic item

A Clearwater household whose appliance or electronic item is too large for the black barrel and will not ride with the ordinary weekly route.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no rate for the special pickup it sends for an oversized item, so confirm the trip and any charge with the operations line before the item goes out.
Arrange it
Call the Solid Waste Operations Line at (727) 562-4920 ahead of the collection day so the pickup is recorded, then have the item at the curb by 7 a.m.

The City asks for the call ahead for appliances and electronic equipment specifically. A device whose rechargeable battery cannot be removed still has to go to a county drop-off rather than into the trash or the special pickup.

See the City bulky item page

With a new purchase

Permitted private hauler or roll-off container

A household or contractor with a load larger than the curbside program takes, or with material the City refuses at the curb.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no private hauler or roll-off rate, so confirm the container size, the material, the pickup window and the price directly with the company.
Arrange it
Ask the company for its City of Clearwater permit, describe the material and confirm where it will be taken before the container is delivered. The department issues private hauler and recovered material dealer permits.

Construction or building material, lumber, metal and dirt are refused in the curbside collections, so this route replaces the weekly pickup for those loads rather than adding to it.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Clearwater runs its own collection, so most of the work happens on the regular service day rather than at a drop off. Furniture, a mattress, a washer or a pile of yard waste goes to the curb with the weekly route, and the operations line handles the two exceptions, appliances and electronic equipment. What the curbside program refuses has a county home instead. Household chemicals go free to the north county household hazardous waste site at 29582 U.S. 19 N. in Clearwater on select Saturdays, or to the main center at 2855 109th Avenue N. in St. Petersburg during the week, and construction, remodeling and demolition material goes to the county Solid Waste Disposal Complex at 3095 114th Avenue N. in St. Petersburg, which charges by the ton or at a flat rate depending on the vehicle and takes a deposit from customers without an account. Tires over 36 inches have to be cut into quarters, up to four tires may stay on the rim, a load with five or more waste tires is weighed at the tire rate, and loads with 26 or more tires need state waste tire collector registration.

Scale house Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sundays, with holiday hours on a separate notice. Customers have to wear closed toed shoes for a Christmas tree load.

How does Clearwater bulk pickup work?

You set the items at the curb on your regular collection day and the City crews pick them up, with no call needed to schedule a bulk pickup. Trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk items are all collected on the same service date, and the operations line handles a missed pickup or a question about what will be taken.Official guidance

What cannot go in a bulk pile?

Dirt, rocks and sod, plaster, highly flammable liquids, potentially explosive materials, toxic substances, biohazardous waste, motor oil, lumber, metal, construction or building material, pesticides and herbicides, hazardous material, paint and electronics. Latex paint is dried out and then placed in the garbage once no wet paint remains, and oil based paint goes to the county household hazardous waste center.Official guidance

Who is responsible for debris left by a tenant?

The landlord, whether the tenant moved out or was evicted. The City offers a removal service at an additional charge for that situation, and non-compliance can lead to suspended service or a fine placed on the utility bill, so call the operations line rather than setting the pile out as ordinary bulk.Official guidance

Do mattresses need an appointment in Clearwater?

No appointment, because a mattress goes out with the same weekly bulk collection that runs on your regular service day. The City does not list bedding among the named examples for the program, so call the operations line first if the mattress is part of a larger pile or needs special handling.Official guidance

Does bedding count against the bulky allowance?

Yes. Each single family home is allowed up to 40 cubic yards of bulk collection per calendar year, and a mattress or box spring is part of that material rather than a separate allowance, so keep bedding in one load with the rest of the bulk items.Official guidance
