The local disposal guide
Fort Pierce runs its own collection crew, and bulky material still goes to the curb. A household may set out up to two cubic yards of bulky waste a week, naming furniture, stoves, mattresses, wood and swing sets, and up to four cubic yards of yard waste in the black yard waste cart and stacked brush. Volume past those limits is charged by the cubic yard on the utility bill rather than refused. What the city will not touch is a different list: construction and remodeling debris, automobile parts and contractor material all go to the St. Lucie County facility on Glades Cut-Off Road, which is also where tires, scrap metal and white goods are taken.

Bulky waste is household material too large for the trash cart with the lid closed. A residence may set out up to two cubic yards a week, and volume past that is charged rather than refused.

Yard waste has its own weekly allowance of four cubic yards, with small material in the city black yard waste cart and brush stacked beside it, and volume past the allowance is charged rather than refused.
Fort Pierce does not publish a tire route. The St. Lucie County facility takes them with a published rate that is per tire for small counts and per ton above that.
Scrap metal is refused in the city recycling cart and taken at the county facility, where it is charged as a flat rate per load.
Construction, remodeling and demolition debris is refused by the city by name, and it is also on the yard waste refusal list. The county facility takes it at a published per ton rate.
Only city issued carts are serviced, the lid has to close, and anything left on the ground waits for the bulky day instead of being collected with the cart.
The handoff matters
Automated collection needs room. Put the cart out the night before or by 7 a.m., keep it at least five feet from other carts, bulk items, mailboxes, trees, poles and cars, and place it within two feet of the curb with the lid arrows toward the street and the handle toward the house. Bag small debris, close the lid and leave nothing on top.

Trucks need eighteen feet of clearance, so keep the pile out from under low trees and wires. Remove the doors from any appliance, roll and tie carpet and rugs, and put glass and mirrors in a rigid container.

Up to two cubic yards each week, stacked neatly at the curb for the neighbourhood collection day. Anything above the allowance is not refused, it is charged by the cubic yard on the utility bill through Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, and a pile that is not stacked in line with the guidelines is subject to a fee.Official guidance
Yes. A mattress is one of the bulky waste examples the city publishes, so it goes out with the weekly bulky pile and counts against the two cubic yard allowance. It is stacked with the rest of the pile rather than left beside the cart.Official guidance
All doors come off a refrigerator, washer, dryer or stove before the unit is placed at the curb. The appliance then goes out with the bulky pile on the collection day, and a household that would rather self haul white goods can take them to the county facility, where they are charged at the per load rate for scrap metal and white goods.Official guidance
