The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Palm Beach Gardens does not run its own collection crew. The City holds an exclusive franchise agreement with Waste Management, and that is who answers on 561-471-6110 about pickup days for garbage, recycling, vegetative waste and bulk pickups. The program rules are strict about timing and size: nothing goes out before noon the day before, collection runs a long window from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., each trash can tops out at 45 gallons and 50 pounds, and large appliance doors have to come off. Bulk waste such as a refrigerator, a washer or a toilet is picked up once a week with the regular route. The items the franchise will not touch, which is a long list running from paint and pesticides to tires and construction debris, belong to the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, and county households drop hazardous waste there at no charge.

Curbside household garbage

Accepted with preparation

Waste Management collects household trash curbside under the City franchise, and the City sets the set out window, the container size and the weight limit.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no residential collection rate, because the collection is delivered under its exclusive franchise agreement with Waste Management and is billed to the household rather than priced at the curb. Confirm what applies to your address with Waste Management on 561-471-6110 or with City Solid Waste Services through Public Works on 561-804-7034.
When & how
Waste Management states that it provides twice weekly trash collection in Palm Beach Gardens, with the collection times running from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and household waste curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day. The City describes its commercial collection as running once a week at minimum.
Get it ready
Bag all trash and keep the lid closed tightly, because overflow and material outside the container are not collected. Use a trash can or tied plastic bag of no more than 45 gallons, and keep each can or bag at or under 50 pounds. Nothing goes to the curb earlier than noon on the day preceding collection. Construction waste, auto parts, tires, household hazardous waste such as paint, oil and household cleaners, and medical or electronic waste are not accepted in the trash.

Weekly bulk waste collection

Accepted with preparation

Bulk waste is picked up once a week with the regular collection, and the City names refrigerators, appliances, toilets and sinks among the items it takes.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no separate bulk waste rate and the collection is part of the franchised service billed to the household, so confirm the amount, the item and the collection day with Waste Management on 561-471-6110.
When & how
Once a week along with the household and yard waste collection, with the same set out window: nothing at the curb before noon the day before, and everything out by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Set the bulk items out at the same time as the household material so one visit covers the load, and keep them clear of the containers so the crew can reach both. Large appliance doors have to be removed, which the City states is required by law, and a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner still holding gas should be discussed with Waste Management before it goes out because the City publishes no degassing step. Paint cans, pesticides, pool chemicals, engine oil, tires, auto parts and construction or demolition debris are not part of the bulk collection.

Mattresses and bedding

Special rules apply

A mattress is not named in the City bulk examples or by the hauler, so the piece has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for bedding and does not name a mattress among its bulk examples, which are refrigerators, washers and dryers, toilets and sinks. Confirm the piece, the collection day and any charge with Waste Management on 561-471-6110 before the mattress goes to the curb.
When & how
If the mattress is accepted it goes out with the weekly bulk schedule, no earlier than noon the day before collection and at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and wrap it so it can be lifted without debris falling out, and set it out with the rest of the bulk load rather than on its own. Ask when you call whether a box spring, an adjustable base or a bed frame counts as the same item or as separate pieces.
City Solid Waste Services page with the Waste Management franchise, the set out times, container limits, bulk list and the items routed to the Solid Waste Authority

Appliances and refrigerators

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators and laundry appliances are named in the weekly bulk collection, and the City requires the large appliance doors to be removed.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no separate appliance rate and the pickup is part of the franchised weekly bulk service, so confirm the item, the collection day and any amount with Waste Management on 561-471-6110. An appliance taken to a Solid Waste Authority facility instead is charged by weight under the published tipping fee schedule.
When & how
With the weekly bulk collection, no earlier than noon the day before and at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Remove the door from a refrigerator, freezer or other large appliance, which the City states is required by law, and empty the unit completely before it goes out. Ask Waste Management whether a unit that still holds refrigerant needs anything done first, because the City publishes no degassing or tagging step for a curbside appliance.

Televisions and household electronics

Not on the regular city route

Electronic waste is refused in the curbside program, and the Solid Waste Authority takes electronics free from county households at its Home Chemical and Recycling Centers.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Palm Beach County residents at the Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Centers, free for electronics along with household hazardous waste, batteries, fluorescent tubes and mercury devices. Small businesses pay for hazardous waste drop off under the very small quantity generator program, and electric vehicle batteries are not accepted at all.
When & how
Take the device to a Home Chemical and Recycling Center. The center on N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., closed Sunday, with other Saturdays self service drop off only, and there is no curbside collection of hazardous waste or electronic waste anywhere in the county.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the garbage and the recycling bin, because the hauler lists electronic waste as non acceptable in the trash container. Batteries should be treated separately: alkaline batteries may go in the garbage, while lithium button, single use and rechargeable batteries have to be taken to a center, and the terminals should be protected in transit. Keep products upright in the trunk or truck bed and never mix chemicals.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition debris is refused in the curbside program and goes to a Solid Waste Authority permitted recycling facility or the landfill drop off center.

City cost & eligibility
From $80 for the published per ton tipping fee for construction debris and large vegetation at Solid Waste Authority facilities, with a published per cubic yard rate and a minimum charge on the same schedule. Anyone delivering to a Solid Waste Authority facility, with cash, credit card or an approved charge account at the scale house and a refundable deposit while the load is weighed. Mixed loads are charged at the higher waste category rate, and construction debris from outside the county carries a separate rate.
When & how
The permitted recycling facilities and the Customer Convenience Drop-Off Center at the North County Landfill take material on the Authority's posted days, with the landfill complex open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every facility closed Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The transfer stations run shorter Saturday hours.
Get it ready
Separate the material where the job site allows it, because recovered metals, cardboard, concrete and lumber are processed for reuse and a mixed load is priced at the higher category. A load going to a transfer station or one of the renewable energy facilities must be free of concrete, block, brick, tile, steel, rebar, roofing material, construction lumber, trusses, pallets, dirt, fill, sod and stumps, because those go to the landfill instead. Cover the load for transport, since a load that is not secured draws an added fee.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named neither by the City nor by the hauler, so the machine is confirmed before it goes to the curb.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no rate for an item it does not name. Exercise equipment is not in the City bulk examples, which are refrigerators, washers and dryers, toilets and sinks, so call Waste Management on 561-471-6110 and confirm whether the machine is accepted and what it counts as before it goes out.
When & how
Confirm with Waste Management first, then use the weekly bulk schedule, with nothing out before noon the day before and everything at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Describe the machine when you call, including whether it folds down and how much curb space it takes, and take off any loose weights or console so the crew can handle it. Break down what comes apart and keep the pieces together in one pile rather than setting them out on separate days.
City Solid Waste Services page with the Waste Management franchise, the set out times, container limits, bulk list and the items routed to the Solid Waste Authority

Yard waste and vegetation

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is collected weekly, with grass and leaves in sturdy tied bags or a 45 gallon can and branches, limbs and palm fronds tied and bundled.

City cost & eligibility
The City publishes no separate yard waste rate and the collection runs inside the franchised weekly service, so confirm the amount and the collection day with Waste Management on 561-471-6110. Vegetation taken to a Solid Waste Authority facility instead is charged under the published tipping fee schedule.
When & how
Once a week with the household and bulk collection, and large yard waste piles are collected on the same weekly round. Nothing goes out before noon the day before, and yard waste has to be curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Put grass clippings, leaves and small twigs in sturdy tied plastic bags or a 45 gallon can, and tie and bundle branches, limbs and palm fronds so the crew can lift them. Keep each can or bag at or under 50 pounds. Vegetation delivered to a Solid Waste Authority facility instead has to be free of garbage, sand and other contamination.

Paint, chemicals and hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous material stays out of the curbside containers and goes free to a Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Center.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Palm Beach County residents at the Home Chemical and Recycling Centers, free for household hazardous waste including paint, stains, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids and filters, propane and compressed gas cylinders, fluorescent tubes and other mercury devices, used cooking oil and batteries. Small businesses pay under the very small quantity generator program, and commercial or industrial waste without that approval is refused.
When & how
Drop off at a Home Chemical and Recycling Center rather than the curb, since there is no curbside collection of household hazardous waste anywhere in the county. The center on N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., closed Sunday, with other Saturdays self service only.
Get it ready
Keep products in their original containers with tight lids, never mix different chemicals, place a leaking container inside a second sealed container, and carry the material upright in the trunk or truck bed. Quantities are capped at 30 gallons of gasoline at the West Palm Beach and western Delray Beach centers and 10 gallons at the others, 25 gallons of oil and 10 fluorescent bulbs, with larger quantities arranged by phone. Refused at the centers: empty containers, explosives, garbage or trash, prescription medications, radioactive waste, sharps or medical waste and tires.

Nothing out before noon the day before

The City sets the outside limit at noon on the day preceding collection, and the collection window itself runs from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Household and yard waste has to be curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day. Waste Management asks that the container sit on the street with the wheels against the curb, bags less than six feet from the curb, and the container at least three feet from parked cars, mailboxes and other obstacles, then be brought back in the same day.

City Solid Waste Services page with the Waste Management franchise, the set out times, container limits, bulk list and the items routed to the Solid Waste AuthorityWaste Management Palm Beach Gardens residential page with the twice weekly collection and the container and material instructions

Keep every container to 45 gallons and 50 pounds

Household trash goes in a trash can or a tied plastic bag, with the can no larger than 45 gallons, and each can or bag must stay at or under 50 pounds. Yard waste follows the same shape: sturdy tied plastic bags or a 45 gallon can for grass, leaves and twigs, and tied bundles for branches, limbs and palm fronds. Overflow and anything outside the container is not collected.

City Solid Waste Services page with the Waste Management franchise, the set out times, container limits, bulk list and the items routed to the Solid Waste AuthorityWaste Management Palm Beach Gardens residential page with the twice weekly collection and the container and material instructions

Take the large appliance doors off

The City requires the removal of large appliance doors and states that this is required by law, so a refrigerator, freezer or oven door comes off before the unit goes to the curb and the appliance is emptied of food, water, dishes and clothes. Ask Waste Management about a unit that still holds refrigerant, because the City publishes no degassing step for the curbside pickup.

Problem material goes to the Authority

Paint cans, pesticides, pool chemicals, engine oil, tires, auto parts and construction or demolition debris are refused curbside, and so are medical and electronic waste and household hazardous waste in the trash. They go to a Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Center or the Customer Convenience Drop-Off Center at the North County Landfill instead, where county households drop hazardous waste free and a self haul load is weighed and charged under the published fee schedule.

City of Palm Beach Gardens Solid Waste Services with Waste Management, Inc. and the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County

The franchised Waste Management collection

Any household in the city with weekly garbage, recycling, vegetative waste or a bulky item to clear.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no residential rate for the franchised collection, so confirm the amount and the collection day with Waste Management on 561-471-6110 or through City Solid Waste Services on 561-804-7034.
Arrange it
Call Waste Management to confirm the pickup days for the address, then follow the City set out rules: nothing before noon the day before, everything curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day, containers back in the same day.

The curbside program refuses paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, engine oil, tires, auto parts, construction and demolition debris, and medical or electronic waste, all of which go to the Solid Waste Authority instead.

See the City collection rules

With a new purchase

Permitted hauler or roll off container

A household or contractor with a renovation load, or with material the curbside program will not take.

Cost & conditions
The City publishes no private hauler rate, so confirm the container size, the material, the pickup window and the price directly with the company, and ask where the load is going because mixed loads are priced at the higher waste category at Authority facilities.
Arrange it
Describe the material and where it will be staged, separate what can be separated, and confirm the destination before the container is delivered.

Construction and demolition debris is refused in the curbside collections, so this route replaces the weekly pickup rather than adding to it, and the material has to go to a permitted recycling facility or the Authority landfill.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Inside the city the curb is the main route, because Waste Management holds the exclusive franchise and runs garbage, recycling, vegetative waste and a weekly bulk pickup that takes everything from a refrigerator to a toilet. What the curbside program will not take has a county home. Household hazardous waste, electronics, batteries, fluorescent tubes and mercury devices go free to a Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Center, including the one at 6161 N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach, which is open six days a week with no curbside alternative anywhere in the county. Construction and demolition material goes to a permitted recycling facility or to the Customer Convenience Drop-Off Center at the North County Landfill on N. Jog Road, where loads are weighed, mixed material is charged at the higher category and the concrete, brick, roofing material and lumber that transfer stations refuse are taken. Yard waste and appliances can also be hauled to the landfill instead of the curb, and the Authority charges those by the ton and the cubic yard under a published schedule. Garbage, trash, construction and demolition debris, large vegetation, whole and oversized tires, white goods such as appliances, trailers, special waste classes and whole animals, along with the concrete, block, brick, tile, steel, rebar, roofing material, construction lumber, trusses, pallets, dirt, fill, sod and stumps that the transfer stations and renewable energy facilities refuse.

Mixed loads are charged at the higher waste category rate, every customer weighs out unless a tare weight is on file, and a load that is not secured with a rope, tarp or other cover draws an added fee. Cash and credit cards are taken at the scale house, with a deposit while the load is weighed, and a charge account needs prior credit approval. Tires with rims and oversized tires are charged at the higher tire rate, and loads delivered in a tractor trailer or needing special handling are handled at the landfill rather than a transfer station.

Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

From $10 for the published tipping fee per ton for white goods such as appliances, with a published per cubic yard rate and a minimum charge on the same schedule and higher published per ton rates for construction and demolition debris and large vegetation. Anyone delivering to a Solid Waste Authority facility, with mixed loads charged at the higher waste category rate and construction debris from outside the county carrying a separate rate. Payment is by cash, credit card or an approved charge account.

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

When is bulk waste collected?

Once a week, on the same schedule as the household and yard waste collection. The City lists bulk waste such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, toilets and sinks as a weekly pickup, with nothing set out before noon the day before and everything at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day.Official guidance

What does the bulk collection leave behind?

Paint cans, pesticides, pool chemicals, engine oil, tires, auto parts and construction or demolition debris. The City directs all of those to the Solid Waste Authority instead, and the hauler separately refuses construction waste, auto parts, tires, household hazardous waste and medical or electronic waste in the trash container.Official guidance

What has to be done to a large appliance?

The door comes off. The City requires the removal of large appliance doors, states that this is required by law, and lists refrigerators alongside washers and dryers in the weekly bulk collection. The unit is emptied first, and refrigerant handling should be confirmed with Waste Management because the City publishes no degassing step.Official guidance

Where do electronics go in the city?

To a Solid Waste Authority Home Chemical and Recycling Center rather than the curb. The hauler lists electronic waste as non acceptable in the trash container, and the Authority takes electronics free from Palm Beach County households at its seven centers, including the one on N. Jog Road in West Palm Beach.Official guidance

Which batteries can go in the trash?

Only alkaline batteries may safely go in the garbage. Lithium batteries, whether button, single use or rechargeable, have to be taken to a Home Chemical and Recycling Center or another drop off location, and electric vehicle batteries are not accepted at any Authority facility, so a dealer handles those.Official guidance

Where does construction debris go?

Not to the curb. The City refuses construction and demolition debris in its curbside services and directs residents to the Solid Waste Authority, which routes separated material to permitted recycling facilities and mixed loads to a permitted facility or the Customer Convenience Drop-Off Center at the North County Landfill.Official guidance

What cannot go to a transfer station?

Concrete, block, brick, tile, steel, rebar, roofing material, construction lumber, trusses, pallets, dirt, fill, sod and stumps are refused at the transfer stations and the renewable energy facilities, so those loads go to the landfill. The Authority also charges a mixed load at the higher waste category rate.Official guidance

Who handles collection in the city?

Waste Management, Inc. holds the exclusive franchise for solid waste, yard waste and recycling collection in Palm Beach Gardens, and its customer line is 561-471-6110.
