The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Wellington runs curbside collection through a contracted hauler under a Village solid waste department, with three container streams: blue for cans, cartons, glass and plastic, yellow for paper and cardboard, and separate vegetation containers. Containers go out no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before and no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day, and the Village tags a pile that does not follow the guidelines, either to be corrected for the next pickup or removed as is for a published per cubic yard fee. Bulk trash is the part that matters for a clear-out, and it is unusually generous: it runs one day a week, it takes up to four cubic yards, and the published list names refrigerators, ranges, toilets, mattresses, carpet cut to four foot lengths, washers and dryers and water heaters. Everything that cannot go in a cart and cannot go on the bulk pile, from paint and pool chemicals to electronics, batteries, propane and used motor oil, is routed to the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, which takes household hazardous waste free from county residents at seven centers and does not collect it at the curb at all.

Weekly carts, recycling and vegetation

Accepted with preparation

Wellington collects garbage, recycling and vegetation in separate containers, with blue for containers and glass, yellow for paper and cardboard, and the collection run by a hauler contracted to the Village solid waste department.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential garbage, recycling and vegetation collection is part of the Village service. A non-compliant pile that has been tagged may be removed as is for a hauler fee of $9.00 per cubic yard if the resident chooses not to correct it for the next scheduled pickup.
When & how
Containers go in front of the residence no later than 7:00 a.m. on the collection day and no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before, and bulk trash may go out 24 hours before the collection day. There is no garbage, recycling or vegetation collection on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, and service resumes on the next scheduled day. Residents in an HOA are told to check the association's guidelines as well.
Get it ready
Cans face the correct way, with the wheels and handle closest to the house, and the same applies to vegetation containers. A container may hold material that protrudes from the top, but nothing goes on the lid and items should not exceed six feet. Blue takes cans, cartons, glass bottles and jars with lids off, and plastic bottles and containers with lids on at two gallons or less. Yellow takes cardboard, paper rolls, dry food and pizza boxes without food stains, magazines, mail and office or school paper. Aluminum foil, foam, paper plates, towels and napkins, shredded paper, light bulbs, plastic bags and plastic utensils do not belong in recycling.

Weekly bulk trash collection

Accepted with preparation

Wellington collects bulk trash one day a week, taking items too large for the cart such as major appliances and furniture, with up to four cubic yards per household on the bulk collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulk trash is part of the Village collection, with up to four cubic yards accepted per household on the bulk collection day, the equivalent of a small pickup truck bed. A tagged non-compliant pile may be removed as is for a hauler fee of $9.00 per cubic yard instead of being corrected.
When & how
Bulk trash runs one day a week and may be placed for collection 24 hours before that day, in front of the residence. The pile has to be neatly stacked, cut to less than six feet in length, and placed near but no closer than three feet from other objects such as mailboxes and the automated garbage container.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to items too large for the cart, and check the published examples before stacking it. Remove or seal the doors on all appliances with tape, break up mirrors, glass doors, glass tabletops and pane glass and bag the pieces inside the container, containerize loose material such as drywall and floor tile at less than 50 pounds per container, and leave concrete and rock out entirely.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is named in the guidance as the kind of large item the weekly bulk collection takes, inside the four cubic yard limit.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture goes out with the weekly bulk trash collection at no separate charge, within the four cubic yard household limit for the bulk collection day.
When & how
Put the piece out no earlier than 24 hours before the bulk collection day, in front of the residence, with the pile neatly stacked, cut to less than six feet and at least three feet from mailboxes and the automated garbage container.
Get it ready
Keep the piece inside the four cubic yard limit and off the top of the cart, and keep concrete, rock, construction material and vegetation from tree removal out of the pile.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is named directly in Wellington's published list of acceptable bulk trash, so it goes out with the weekly bulk collection.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. A mattress goes out with the weekly bulk trash collection at no separate charge, inside the four cubic yard household limit for the bulk collection day.
When & how
Set the mattress out no earlier than 24 hours before the bulk collection day, in front of the residence, as part of a neatly stacked pile that sits at least three feet from mailboxes and the automated garbage container.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the garbage cart and inside the four cubic yard limit, keep the pile under six feet in length, and keep concrete, rock and construction material out of it.

Major appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers and water heaters are named in the published bulk trash list, with a requirement to remove or seal appliance doors before the pile goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. An appliance goes out with the weekly bulk trash collection at no separate charge, inside the four cubic yard household limit for the bulk collection day.
When & how
Put the appliance out no earlier than 24 hours before the bulk collection day as part of the pile, with the pile stacked neatly, cut to less than six feet and set at least three feet from mailboxes and the automated garbage container.
Get it ready
For safety, remove or seal the doors on all appliances with tape before the pile goes out, empty the unit, and keep it inside the four cubic yard limit. A refrigerator or freezer is listed among the acceptable bulk examples rather than being excluded, but confirm the refrigerant handling with the hauler if the unit still holds a charge.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are not part of the recycling streams, and the Village routes them to the Solid Waste Authority's Home Chemical and Recycling Centers, where they are accepted free from county residents.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The Solid Waste Authority states that household hazardous waste, including electronics, can be dropped off at no cost by Palm Beach County residents at any of its seven Home Chemical and Recycling Centers. Small businesses pay to drop off hazardous waste.
When & how
Take the devices to a Home Chemical and Recycling Center. The Authority's customer line is 561-697-2700, and two of the centers, at 6161 N Jog Rd in West Palm Beach and 13400 S State Road 7 in Delray Beach, are listed as open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the blue and yellow containers and off the bulk pile, because the Village routes them to the Authority rather than through curbside collection, and wipe personal data from a computer, drive or phone before it leaves the property. Alkaline batteries may go in the garbage, but lithium batteries have to go to a center.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the Village's bulk trash list or in the Authority's accepted list, so the machine has to be confirmed with the Village solid waste office.

City cost & eligibility
No published amount covers an exercise machine and neither list read here names the category, so confirm acceptance with the Village Solid Waste Department at 561-791-4003 before the machine goes to the curb. If it is accepted it counts inside the four cubic yard bulk limit on the bulk collection day.
When & how
Call 561-791-4003 before setting the machine out, and if it is accepted, treat it as part of the weekly bulk pile placed out no earlier than 24 hours before the bulk collection day.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it, so the pile stays neatly stacked and inside the four cubic yard limit, and keep it clear of mailboxes and the automated container by at least three feet.

Construction and demolition debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition debris is not included in curbside residential service, and a project has to lease a roll-off container from a hauler permitted in Wellington.

City cost & eligibility
The Village states that construction and demolition debris, including steel, brick, concrete, roofing materials, pipe and lumber, is not included in curbside residential service, and directs a resident with a demolition or construction project to lease a roll-off container from a hauler permitted in Wellington. The container is quoted by the permitted hauler rather than by the Village.
When & how
Arrange the roll-off container with a permitted hauler before the project generates debris, because the material cannot go out with the weekly collection or on the bulk pile.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the carts, the vegetation containers and the bulk pile, and keep loose material that does go out, such as drywall and floor tile from a minor repair, containerized at less than 50 pounds per container, with no concrete or rock in the pile at all.

Paint, chemicals, propane, oil and batteries

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous waste and home chemicals are refused at the curb, and the Village routes them to the Solid Waste Authority's seven Home Chemical and Recycling Centers, which take them free from county residents.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The Solid Waste Authority states that Palm Beach County residents can drop off household hazardous waste free at any of its seven Home Chemical and Recycling Centers, located at its transfer stations and on the main campus on Jog Road. Small businesses pay for hazardous waste drop-off.
When & how
Take the material to a Home Chemical and Recycling Center. The Authority's line is 561-697-2700, and the centers at 6161 N Jog Rd in West Palm Beach and 13400 S State Road 7 in Delray Beach are listed as open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gasoline is accepted at any center, but an empty gasoline container is only returned at those two.
Get it ready
Keep hazardous material out of every container and off the bulk pile, because the Authority states there is no curbside collection for it. The accepted list covers aerosol cans that are not empty, ammunition, flares and fireworks, automotive fluids and filters, lithium, button, rechargeable, automotive and marine batteries, boating waste, electronics, fluorescent tubes and CFLs and other mercury devices, household cleaners, paints, stains, glues and solvents, pesticides and fertilizers, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, propane and compressed gas cylinders, rubbing alcohol and used cooking oil. Alkaline batteries are the exception and may go in the garbage.

Lease a roll-off from a permitted hauler

A household or contractor with a demolition or construction project that produces debris the curbside service refuses.

Cost & conditions
The Village states that construction and demolition debris is not included in curbside residential service and directs residents to lease a roll-off container from a hauler permitted in Wellington. The container is quoted by the hauler for the specific project, so confirm the size, the delivery terms and the disposal charge before ordering.

The Authority runs seven Home Chemical and Recycling Centers at its transfer stations and on the main campus on Jog Road in West Palm Beach, and it takes household hazardous waste free from county residents, with small businesses paying. The accepted list covers aerosol cans that are not empty, ammunition, flares and fireworks, automotive fluids and filters, batteries including lithium and rechargeable types, boating waste, electronics, fluorescent tubes and other mercury devices, household cleaners, paints, stains, glues and solvents, pesticides and fertilizers, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, propane and compressed gas cylinders, rubbing alcohol and used cooking oil. Vegetation has to come from routine residential yard maintenance. Tree removal, limbs over ten inches in diameter, trunks, stumps, root balls, lot or land clearing vegetation, and anything needing wheeled or tracked machinery to remove are not collected, and residents have to arrange those separately.Official guidance

What is the $9.00 per cubic yard charge?

It is the hauler's fee for removing a tagged pile as is, when a resident chooses not to correct a pile that does not follow the Village guidelines. The alternative is to fix the pile so it is collected on the next scheduled pickup day.Official guidance

What happens after a storm?

The Village publishes a separate hurricane debris management guide and links it from its solid waste page alongside the Palm Beach County hurricane guide. Vegetation from storm damage or land clearing is not part of routine curbside vegetation collection, so check the Village's storm debris guidance before piling it at the curb.Official guidance
