A mattress is a large bulky item on the city's zone bulky route, within the ten cubic yard allowance.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Bulky waste collection is part of the city's solid waste service, which is billed through the tax bill, and the route takes large bulky items and yard waste up to ten cubic yards per scheduled pickup.
When & how
Check your address on the 2026 pickup calendar to find the bulky day for your zone, then place the mattress at the edge of the street on your property one day before the scheduled pickup, and call HPS Sanitation at (305) 224-4860 with any question.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to ten cubic yards, place it at least five feet from mailboxes, trees and cars, and keep construction debris, tires, paints, liquids, concrete, rocks and sod out of the pile because the city refuses them.
Cans and piles go out the evening before and come back in the same day
Garbage cans, recycling cans and bulky waste piles go at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before collection and no later than 4 a.m. the day of collection, and all cans must be removed from the curb by 8 p.m. that day. Cans and piles stay at least five feet apart from one another and clear of obstacles such as mailboxes, trees and cars, with containers facing the house.
The bulky pile is ten cubic yards with a specific refuse list
Large bulky items and yard waste go to the edge of the street on your property one day before the scheduled pickup and must not exceed ten cubic yards, five feet clear of obstacles. Appliances collected include stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers and water heaters with refrigerator and freezer doors removed, and yard waste is limited to limbs under four inches in diameter and stumps under fifteen inches and fifty pounds.

Homestead Public Services Sanitation does, on a zone schedule for garbage, recycling and bulky waste, with the office at (305) 224-4860 and administrative hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city also keeps a drop site at 548 SE 6th Avenue open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the city publishes no item list for that site, so confirm before loading.Official guidance
