City cost & eligibility
No charge. City of Canton residents using the City collection site at 2525 Ridge Road, where trash disposal is free to households inside the city limits and the accepted list names washers and dryers, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters, and freezers and refrigerators that have been emptied of food and tagged as freon free. The county recycling center charges separately by item.
When & how
During collection site hours, which are Monday from 7 a.m. to noon as senior day, Thursday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a lunch closure from 12 to 1 p.m., and closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, or at the county recycling center on its own schedule.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance completely, and tag a refrigerator or freezer as freon free, because the collection site accepts one only when it is emptied of food and carries that tag. A unit that still holds refrigerant, or an appliance taken to the county center instead, carries a published per item charge there, so ask before the trip.
Neither the bulky item pickup nor the brush pickup happens on its own. Both are scheduled by calling Canton Public Works at 770-720-7674, bulky items run once per month per residential property and brush runs once a week per property on request. The free City collection site is the walk in or drive in alternative for the material it accepts.
The bulky item service refuses anything over 50 pounds and does not take cardboard boxes, and it is meant for a single piece of furniture, a mattress or another item that will not fit in the sanitation cart. A refrigerator or freezer also has to be emptied of food and tagged as freon free before the City collection site will take it.
The Cherokee County Recycling Center at 470 Blalock Road accepts appliances, batteries, mattresses, paint, flat screen televisions and monitors, bagged household trash, polystyrene and all electronics except tube televisions and CRT monitors, with published per item charges and payment by card or check only. Its Hobgood Park location takes single stream recyclables and glass only, and both sites refuse motor oil, antifreeze, tires, light bulbs, unbagged trash and construction waste.
