The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Columbus is a consolidated city-county government, so one public works division runs both the curbside programme and the two landfills. Household waste has to be in a city issued black or brown cart, and everything else runs on the same day as the cart: recycling, yard waste and bulk waste all follow the household garbage day. Bulk solid waste and large yard piles are not automatic, because they need a call to 311 for a scheduled pickup, and the city will not take a mixed pile. When the curb is not the answer, the city has two open landfills: the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill takes household garbage that includes furniture at a published per ton rate along with construction waste and organic material, and the Granite Bluff Inert Landfill on River Road takes soil, rocks, bricks, concrete without rebar and cured asphalt. Hazardous material goes to the Household Hazardous Waste Day the city runs at its Recycling and Sustainability Center.

Household garbage and the city cart

Accepted with preparation

Household waste has to be in a city issued black or brown cart to be collected, and a second brown cart is bought through 311 for a published purchase price with no additional collection charge.

City cost & eligibility
Household collection is part of the city service and no per pickup price is published, while a second brown cart is a published $55.00 purchase through 311 at (706) 653-4000 with no additional charge to collect from it, so confirm your cart and account details with 311.
When & how
Put the cart out on the household garbage day for the address, because recycling, yard waste and bulk waste are all collected the same day as the garbage cart.
Get it ready
Use only a city issued black or brown cart, because household waste in anything else will not be collected, and keep limbs cut for collection under four feet long and under six inches across.

Bulk waste and scheduled pickups

Special rules apply

Bulk solid waste runs on the same day as the garbage cart, but only after the resident calls 311 to request a scheduled pickup, and the city will not collect a mixed pile.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no bulky item rate and no bulky item list, so confirm the item and any charge with 311 at (706) 653-4000 when the pickup is requested. A cut down tree needs a separate Tree for Fee request that the resident has to authorize.
When & how
Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 to request the scheduled bulk pickup, then put the material out for the day the city assigns.
Get it ready
Keep the pile to a single type of material, because the city states that bulk waste cannot pick up mixed piles, and keep limbs under four feet long and under six inches across. Request a Tree for Fee pickup separately for a cut down tree.

Couches and household furniture

Special rules apply

Furniture is named in the household garbage category the Pine Grove landfill accepts, while the city does not publish which items its scheduled bulk pickup takes, so the couch route has to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no bulky item list, so confirm with 311 at (706) 653-4000 whether a couch goes on a scheduled bulk pickup. Self hauled, furniture falls inside the household garbage category at the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill, which is charged at $85.00 per ton with a single type load.
When & how
Call 311 to request a scheduled bulk pickup for the couch, or haul it to the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill during its open hours as household garbage.
Get it ready
Keep the couch out of the city cart and off a mixed pile, and keep it out of the recycling cart. If the piece is self hauled, the load must be a single type of material, because the landfill does not permit mixed loads or site separation.

Mattresses and box springs

Special rules apply

Neither the city collection page nor the landfill page names a mattress, so the route and the acceptance have to be confirmed before the piece leaves the property.

City cost & eligibility
No Columbus page read here names mattresses in the bulky programme or in the landfill categories, so confirm the item with 311 at (706) 653-4000. If the city sends it to a landfill, the mattress would be charged at the published household garbage rate of $85.00 per ton as a single type load.
When & how
Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 to confirm whether a mattress goes on a scheduled bulk pickup or has to be hauled to a landfill, then follow the route the city gives.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress out of the city cart and off a mixed pile, and confirm the item before the pickup day, because the city's bulky item list is not published.
City collection information page with the city cart requirement, the same day schedule, the 311 bulk pickup requirement, the mixed pile rule and the limb limitsCity landfill page with both landfills, the Muscogee County residency and single load type rules, the published per ton disposal costs, the prohibited items and the Saturday schedules

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Appliances are named in neither the city collection page nor the landfill categories, and the landfill prohibits batteries, so the unit has to be confirmed before it moves.

City cost & eligibility
No Columbus page read here names appliances or white goods, so confirm the unit with 311 at (706) 653-4000. Anything self hauled to the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill is charged at the published $85.00 per ton household garbage rate as a single type load, and metal is handled separately at $102.50 per ton as special handling.
When & how
Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 to confirm whether the appliance goes on a scheduled bulk pickup or has to be hauled to a landfill.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and keep it out of the city cart, and take the batteries out before anything goes to the landfill, because the landfill lists batteries as a prohibited item along with paint.

Televisions, computers and electronic waste

Special rules apply

Electronics appear neither on the hazardous waste day list nor on a landfill list, so the route has to be confirmed with the city's 311 line or its Recycling and Sustainability Center.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no electronics entry for the curbside programme, the landfill categories or the hazardous waste day list, so confirm the item and any charge with 311 at (706) 653-4000 or the Recycling and Sustainability Center at (706) 225-4505 before the device is set out.
When & how
Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 or the Recycling and Sustainability Center at (706) 225-4505 to confirm where a television or computer is accepted, then bring it there rather than setting it out.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the city cart and away from a mixed pile, and remove batteries so they can go to the household hazardous waste route, where rechargeable batteries are on the accepted list.

Construction and demolition debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction waste is a published landfill stream charged by weight, and the Granite Bluff Inert Landfill takes the heavier inert material at a lower published rate.

City cost & eligibility
From $85 per ton for construction waste at the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill, covering roofing, plywood, treated wood, plaster, steel, concrete, plastic, insulation and rubber. Muscogee County residents with a valid ID and a water bill, delivered as a single type of load because the landfill does not permit mixed loads or site separation. Rock, brick, non contaminated soil and concrete without rebar can go to the Granite Bluff Inert Landfill at 7589 River Road at the published $76.50 per ton rate, which takes waste only from Columbus, Georgia.
When & how
Take the load to the Pine Grove Municipal Landfill Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or on a published Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and arrive at least 90 minutes before closing for a large load.
Get it ready
Keep the load to one type of material, because mixed loads are not permitted and site separation is not allowed, and keep paint and batteries out of it because both are prohibited at the landfill. Railroad ties are not accepted anywhere in Columbus, and the city names the Taylor County Landfill in Butler and Mauk as the only known disposal site for them.
City landfill page with both landfills, the Muscogee County residency and single load type rules, the published per ton disposal costs, the prohibited items and the Saturday schedules

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city bulky programme or in the landfill categories, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed before it is set out.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no bulky item list and no exercise equipment entry, so confirm the machine and any charge with 311 at (706) 653-4000. A self hauled load would fall at the published household garbage rate of $85.00 per ton, and metal is handled separately at $102.50 per ton.
When & how
Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 to confirm whether the machine can go on a scheduled bulk pickup or has to be hauled to a landfill.
Get it ready
Break the machine down where it can be handled, keep it out of the city cart, and take off any console or battery pack so the battery can go to the hazardous waste route rather than the landfill.

For the city cart

Household waste only leaves the curb inside a city issued black or brown cart, and everything else runs on the same day as the garbage cart, so recycling, yard waste and bulk waste all follow the household garbage day. A second brown cart is bought through 311 at (706) 653-4000 for a published price and carries no additional collection charge, and household waste in anything other than a city cart is not collected.

For a bulk or large yard pile

Bulk solid waste and large yard piles need a call to 311 at (706) 653-4000 for a scheduled pickup, and the city will not collect a mixed pile, so keep the material to one type. Limbs cut for collection have to be under four feet long and under six inches across, and a cut down tree needs a separate Tree for Fee request that the resident has to ask for and authorise.

For a self hauled load

Both landfills take waste only from Muscogee County or Columbus with proof of residency, and a contractor also has to show proof of where the job is done. Loads have to be one type of material, because mixed loads are not permitted and the site does not separate for you, and paint and batteries are prohibited, with empty or completely dried paint cans allowed after the described solidification procedure.

Columbus runs one integrated waste system across the city and the county. At the curb, household waste has to be in a city issued black or brown cart, and recycling, yard waste and bulk waste all run on the same day as the garbage cart, with a second brown cart bought through 311. Bulk solid waste and large yard piles are never automatic: they need a call to 311 at (706) 653-4000 for a scheduled pickup, the city will not take a mixed pile, limbs have to be under four feet long and under six inches across, and a cut down tree needs its own Tree for Fee request. The Pine Grove Municipal Landfill charges by weight, with household garbage that includes furniture as well as construction waste, organic waste, and metal or special handling material on its published schedule, and it refuses paint and batteries and will not accept a mixed load. The Granite Bluff Inert Landfill on River Road takes soil, rocks, bricks, concrete without rebar and cured asphalt at a lower published rate. How do I arrange a Columbus bulk waste pickup?

Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 and request a scheduled bulk pickup, because bulk solid waste is not collected automatically. Limbs must be under four feet long and under six inches across.Official guidance

How does Columbus take a mattress?

No Columbus page read here names mattresses in either the bulky programme or the landfill categories, so the item has to be confirmed. Call 311 at (706) 653-4000 to ask whether a mattress goes out on a scheduled bulk pickup, or haul it to a city landfill where it would be charged at the published household garbage rate as a single type load.Official guidance

How are Columbus appliances handled?

Where do Columbus televisions and computers go?

Electronics are not named on the city's household hazardous waste day list, which covers antifreeze, paints, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, cleaners, acids, mercury, rechargeable batteries and fluorescent bulbs, and they are not named in the landfill categories either. Confirm the route with 311 at (706) 653-4000 or the Recycling and Sustainability Center at (706) 225-4505, and keep the device out of the city cart in the meantime.Official guidance

What does Columbus charge for trash and large item disposal?

Household collection is part of the city service and no per pickup price is published, while a second brown cart is bought through 311 for a published price and carries no additional collection charge. A scheduled bulk pickup is arranged through 311 and the city publishes no rate for it, so confirm any charge there. Self hauling is priced by weight at the city landfills, with household garbage that includes furniture, construction waste and concrete or dirt at one published rate, organic waste and the inert material at Granite Bluff at a lower one, and metal and special handling material at the highest rate on the schedule. Dropcurb prices its own pickup separately and shows the total at checkout.Official guidance

Where do Columbus residents take paint, batteries and chemicals?

To the Household Hazardous Waste Day the city holds at the Recycling and Sustainability Center at 8001 Pine Grove Way, where antifreeze, paints, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, cleaners, acids, mercury, rechargeable batteries and fluorescent bulbs are accepted. The city describes the event as the first Saturday in October and lists the next collection day as October 10, 2026, so confirm the date with 311 at (706) 653-4000 before loading. Paint and batteries are prohibited at the landfill, and dried or empty paint cans can go in the regular trash after the described solidification procedure.Official guidance

How do I request a bulk pickup in Columbus?

Call 311 at (706) 653-4000, because bulk solid waste and large yard piles are collected only after a scheduled pickup is requested. The bulk collection runs on the same day as the household garbage cart, the city will not collect a mixed pile so the material has to be one type, and limbs have to be under four feet long and under six inches across. A cut down tree needs a separate Tree for Fee request that the resident asks for and authorises.Official guidance
